TCNH: Listener Co-Host Initiative w/ Maureen "mynameismoe" Chandler

Posted by Craig Norris on Nov 19, 2009

hi! my name is maureen "moe" chandler! i am coming to you from charlottetown, pei! do you know where that is? if so, you get a cookie! (not really)

i'm not entirely sure how i found myself here, but here i am! i like to take pictures of music related things and listen to music, so i guess that's how all of this started? either way, here i am! to try to sound like i know lots! i hope you are fooled and think i am very knowledgeable. these cheat sheets sure help. wait. i guess i shouldn't have told you that, eh? that should have been an internal thought, eh.. anyway!

i feel really lucky to be from here! bigger cities are known for getting big name acts, but i like to think we have a really strong and amazing music community here in little charlottetown! i am going to brag now! we have back alley music! the most fantastic little record store with the friendliest people working there! this great little gem of a place made it into the CBC Radio 3: Searchlight! The Top Five Record Stores! hooray! hey they even have live music sometimes! we also have baba's lounge! with a capacity of something like 100, they made it to the final round in CBC Radio 3: SEARCHLIGHT! The Top Live Music Clubs! well deserved, too. one of the very few places i can go to on a random night, and know i will get to experience great music. on the odd night when there is no live music, the bar staff are all super nice to chat with! a lot of the music that has graced the stage of baba's over my years of attending has had a great influence on me. from eyes for telescopes, to pat deighan & the orb weavers (ooh! connection!), to baba's very own annual music festival, close to the coast!

music has always been a pretty big thing for me, even as a little kid. lots of relatives would play instruments and such things (turkey in the straw anyone?). i've even played a couple myself over the years! holy! this seems to be long! and full of exclamation marks! i should stop and get down to business, eh?

oh! a question! what music/band/artist/person, local or otherwise, got you interested in music? what inspired you and eventually brought you to be right here right now??

Well first of all welcome to the club!

What got me interested in music? uh....honestly I have no idea. I think it might be in the old DNA somewhere?

What got me hooked on Radio 3 however was podcasts. I started listening to them early last year and never looked back. Now I spend my days here!

    go Moe go!

    I can't wait!

    answer to the question!

the artist who really hooked me on Canadian music: Hawksley Workman (opening for The Violent Femmes at the UofManitoba, c. 2000)

before that: music seems to be just part of my genetic makeup.  maybe I can credit Sharon Lois and Bram or Fred Penner.

    ahhh! moe's voice! super cute!

let's all use exclamation marks for every sentence we type today!

    re: question

2 people were big influences on where I am now musically.  I had a good friend in university, Bender (his actual last name!), who was really into bands like Squarepusher, Khonner, and Pink Floyd.  He was the one who initially rekindled my love for music, by expanding my horizons beyond what was mainstream, and showing me there was a lot more out there than was on the radio.

Secondly, a few years later (early to mid 2000's), my best friend Wes somehow started listening to bands like Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, and all sorts of other bands I hadn't heard of.  The Canadian indie in his list started me on the road to falling in love with Radio3, discovering the podcast, the web stream, and now here I am.  :)

Great lead off Moe with Bruce Peninsula!

You don't sound nervous at all! Have fun!

When it comes to how I got involved with Canadian indie music, even though I was a fan of Spirit of the West and CTD, I like to say Sam Roberts Band was my gateway drug!

Whoa, all these exclamation points make me excited!

I agree, Moe, your voice is awesome!  And just after Becky's voice from YSP!WSD!  Today is a good day for radio voices.

I'm really excited for this show.  Another cohost from PEI, so soon after fumbelbee! Awesome!

To address the question, What got me into music was my first mp3 player, 8 years ago (when 128MB was big).  It was amazing, best I ever had.  silver pendant that hung around your neck... too bad it took special headphones, which diddn't last.. :(  *sniff*

As for getting into indy music, I can thank mainstream music for that.  Mainstream music made me so angery (up there with the RIAA and country music), I had no choice but to find an alternitive...  I had no idea I'd find such a utopia of amazing music, as I have here.  (Plus the whole site is amazing.  +80000 songs on demand!).  Oh, and fumblebee helped too.

  11. suckamc
    11

    @aaadamaa

sounds like you had the worst mp3 player ever!

where is that fumblebee anyway?  I'm even on the same campus as him and don't ever see him anymore.

If I am answering your question…

    Which I am.

It would be whatever band my brother's were in at the time. I have two older brothers, that for as long as I can remember were into music, and in bands.

You know how Apple has that program "Garageband"? Well… that was my brothers, their friends and our garage on Dora Drive from approximately 1980 to 1984ish when Mom and Dad decided it was too loud for them to be playing in there any more.

They were also the ones that got me into records, back when records were nowtro. I remember thumbing through their milk crates of albums — most specifically Kiss, and Cheap Trick. I listened to Kiss' Dressed to Kill and Cheap Trick's Live at Budokan and Dream Police, any chance I got (when my brothers weren't home).

One of those brothers was in bands pretty much all through my formative years, and why I was knee deep in the local scene here in the 90's and had the chance to see many a band that became the precursor to the seen now.

Like everyone else near my age, I lost love for music at the beginning of this decade and stopped collecting, going to shows, or listening to pretty much anything new.

CBC Radio3 saved me! For that eipihany, you're welcome to… Read this.

Martin, Mo, you're both exempt from that course material — I know you already read.

Mo, you sound great so far!!! Can't wait to hear the rest. (the blog pic rules btw)

    the tubes

I bet in say 10 years when courses are looking back at the history of music that this period will be a very important turning point in how people perceive music.  Before the mid 2000's, we had to listen to what the big labels told us to listen to, creativity was being stifled, and tb3, myself, and many others lost all interest.

Look at what the internet has done to the status quo!

Now a band can spring up from nowhere, have a big audience, tour and do fairly well, all without a label ever taking all their money!  Music videos used to be a thing for the big 2 music channels, now they're all available for free on Youtube.  People even make their own videos and mixes of songs.  The creativity is exploding!

My wonderful journey with CBCRadio 3 started with our very own Steve Krysak, also known as SteveK91 and past co-host. Back our first year at Waterloo I thought Steve was pretty awesome and I may have even had inappropriate feelings for him (!!!!). He listened to cool music I'd never heard of, so naturally I started listening to cool music I'd never heard of. I think one day I accidentally downloaded a podcast, and then my love of canadian music took on a life of its own.

And Steve and I are good friends now. Only the most appropriate of feelings abound :)

re: TCNH: Listener Co-Host Initiative w/ Maureen "mynameismoe" Chandler

I got into music quite early (seven) because of my Brother and Sister, lots of classic rock, it was 1976 after all.

Even though I play in an indie band, I never really paid much attention to the indie scene and recently, before listening to R3, I was only buying Jazz stuff because I was so tired of what I was hearing on commercial radio (blackhole of sounds the same garbage).

Then I decided to tune into what's his face....Craig, yeah Craig, just to see what the fuss was all about, and was very surprised to find out that people actually make good music still.

  26. tb3
    26

    It has occurred to me….

That the Listener Co-Host Initiative, Craig, is probably more responsible for bringing us new users to Radio3 than any other force combined. Think of just how many people sign on and jump in the blog comments when their friends are hosting with you.

I'd put you after Sunshine Dick in terms of importance of drawing fresh, new audience, Craig.

Love seeing all these new R3 friends pop up that I share the R3 love with.

    Expanding music

My music taste had been mostly dancey stuff and the like for a while, but ~3 years ago I think, on fuse on CBC Radio 2, Cadence Weapon and Final Fantasy played together.  That sole hour is responsible for my love of the violin in everything! As well as the turning point for me getting into hip hop.  It a very short time, that man brought it from hate, to love!

the band that changed it for me

musically, to start paying attention to local bands, was the sinatras(link is to interview. they have facebook page but its blocked for me at work)  back in southwest michigan, late 80s. i worked with a couple of these guys & it really introduced me to music beyond the radio (& my grandparents old school country collection).  there was a great post-punk scene there.  Club Soda in Kalamazoo.  Pravda records still has some great bands

for indy Canadian music, i'd have to say stephen fearing.  every band i know & k now of all stems in some way from hearing his music & then getting lucky enough to meet him out in lunenberg back in 2001. the branches reach in many directions since then but he's definitely the base of the tree.

I got in to music when I was 13. A couple of my friends were in a band called November Samurai and I loved going to their shows and hanging out with them. I started listening to the Ataris, Chix Diggit, that kind of thing. My older brother made fun of me all the time since everyone we grew up with listened to country. But eventually I had him convinced too. The first big show I ever went to was Layaway Plan when I was 15 or so and I was instantly hooked. I started going to shows every chance I could, bought a drum kit, and spent basically all of my money on music. Now Stacey (the goofy looking guy in the Layaway Plan picture) and I record music in my basement.

I got in to R3 thanks to iTunes radio. When I turned it on for the first time I heard Sylvie, the new band of November Samurai's drummer. Next I heard Rah Rah. Two Regina bands on the radio? I was hooked and have not looked back since.

re: TCNH: Listener Co-Host Initiative w/ Maureen "mynameismoe" Chandler

My earliest influences was my Mom.  Her vinyl collection was small but effective.  Jan and Dean, Sim & Gar, .  Early vinyl for myself included Seasme Street and Smurfs.  My Mom also did a lot fo recording so in the early 80s I would tape songs from the radio and make my own mixed tapes (yes I had lots of patience).  When she found this out she bought me tapes for Xmas.  A signed copy of Haywire's Black and Blue (she knew the lead singer's mom) and Bon Jovi (yes very scary, but we all gotta start somewhere).

Although I must admit I must give out kudo's to my Bro Kyle for getting me into playing the guitar and showing me bands like Soundgarden and Nirvana;  And my brother's in law for getting me back into Canadian Indie again in these past 6 years.

One of the first bands that I really got into in college was Blackie & The Rodeo Kings.  It was actually my mom or dad who gave me their first one and said I'd probably like it.... they were absolutely right.  I've seen the rodeo kings only once, but it kicked effing ass.  So does Lee Harvy Osmond and Colin Linden and all the other associated acts.  I really really really shoulda went to go see Stephen on sunday night, but didn't out of sheer laziness.  I still regret that decision.

Hey!  Good morning from California!  And welcome to the club!  Hope Craig was gentle with you.

To answer your question, my reincarnation in music happened right there in Charlottetown - in the lounge at Peake's Quay, listening to a bar band from Halfax, Boys Next Door.  But through that show in 2003, the trail led right here to CBC Radio3.  And now look at me: hopelessly hooked on all this great Canadian independent music!

hey, cool re. you being inspired by the Final Fantasy/Cadence Weapon episode of Fuse!!!! I was at the recording of that show in Ottawa (can't remember if Amanda Putz or Alan Neal was hosting at that point). it was a lot of fun.  Cadence Weapon said he refused (jokingly) to play to an audience that was sitting down, and we all actually stood up in little Studio 40 when he played, much to either Amanda's or Alan's amazement.  See, Ottawa CBC Radio listeners aren't so square after all!

i'm incredibly  lucky to get invited to gigs up there & love that via him i learned @ Willie P Bennett, great lake swimmers, luke doucet & countless others.  it's how i found you guys (through trevor weeks shooting them at GGC).

i think it helps that it's not just good music but in general i find the people terrific.  the musicians really make at effort with fans post show & i've got great friends in canada i've met at shows & on blogs like this & facebook.

yeah....it's ALLLLLL @ SF. (that'll probably go straight to his head).  he's out west touring somewhere & then headed back to guelph soon.  it's a great show.

re: TCNH: Listener Co-Host Initiative w/ Maureen "mynameismoe" Chandler

No one song or band, my memory is too poor to even consider that. But every time I live with a new person, they punch me in the face and make me really listen to music like I never listened before.

My grandfather and his giant old headphones and sleepy trips to pick up my grandmother at bingo

My mother and her elton john cassettes and lists of lyrics I had google

My best friend in junior high with his quiet angst and loud metal

My ex and his forcing me to listen and discuss the instrumental aspect of a TON of different stuff (I used to be ALL about the lyrics)

But we're going to give the most credit to my lovely friend Anthony, who made me the multi-genre-rational music lover I am today. Endless drives to and from Charlottetown, buying his i-pod, drunkenly screaming lyrics, waking me up to live music.

My very first Canadian love would probably have to be Alexisonfire, since they were the first time I saw live music that I reaaaally wanted to see. And on a more local level Two Hours Traffic, especially April Storm, made me realize there was amazing talent to be had in little old PEI!!!

I find determining accents tricky these days. It seems like the old regional accents are disappearing. So I would say not really. Plus we all know that in reality Craig has a strong  stereotypical Italian accent and he just puts on a North American one for the radio.

  81. Bio Spice
    81

    @Moe re. accents

I have not detected a different accent.  HOWEVER, having a very good friend from PEI, I have noticed that there are certain words and phrases that make me notice the Islander in her:

e.g. "car" (the pirate-like "arr" sound)

"would you like a drive" (vs. ride)

"would yous guys like a drive" (vs. you guys)

but i haven't heard you offer Craig a ride anywhere yet... maybe that's still to come...

Back in the day Peake's Quay = summer time version of Myron's... Myron's = weekend Meat locker.  Not a place one would expect a fan of indie music would frequent... but if you weren't from PEI I can't blame you.

Peake's Quay tried (tries) to bring in indie bands.... but usually cover bands are/were on the agenda.

Brennen's (no longer exists) and Baba's were the places Moe and I and our friends would frequent back in the day.

What really got me out and going to see local music was someone who was new to my school one year. We ended up sitting near each other because he had a mohawk and I had green hair, and due to him having a last name with a "B" and mine is a "C". We started talking about music and he told me all about the all ages gig. I started going to small all ages shows at the arts guild "back in the day".  I'd like to thank that person because I met a lot of people by going to these shows.

Another avenue that got me into music was when I finally turned 19 and ventured into the UPEI Barn and saw bands like Flush (PEI)and Bucket Truck (NFLD).  The Barn had a lot of great music happen in it before it was knocked down.  I spent a lot of time at Melon's when it was around also. Many bands went through that place too, Bucket Truck, Flush, Dead Red, Iron Giant ..to name a new atlantic canadian bands.

I don't know where I'm going with this....I'll stop typing..

  95. mcfflyer
    95

    @Gibson77

You are correct in your assumption.  I had no idea where to go in C'town, but in all the research I did for my honeymoon, I was aware that Peake's Quay did have live music, and that was our goal.  But at this time, I had no idea what independent music of any sort was.  I'd pretty much given up on new music after New Wave faded in the mid 1980s.  Certainly nothing my kids liked.  But that venue was the beginning of the trail that led here.  And the first CDs that I ordered from Canada, and this was before I found radio3: Two Hours Traffic's self titled first album, and Sloan's A Sides Win, their greatest hits CD/DVD combo.  And it was search for "Sloan" on CBC's main website that brought me to this wonderland!

But I'd sure like to go back to Charlottetown again.  I'd even feed the blue jays.

Great job Moe!!!  (see I added some exclamations points myself)  My parents loved music, I always thought my dad was a great musician when I was very young.  Around 10 years old though I decided to pick up and learn the guitar, I loved Elvis and the Beatles then.

It wasn't until I learned guitar though, that I realized my dad knew only two chords (he didn't even know their names!) and he was definitely not a musician, but he always had a great love for music.  A bit too much country for my liking.

    Answer to question

At some point in my life, I became aware that I liked what I had heard of Joan Jett's music, but that that amounted to two or three older songs.  So I went looking for more.  Once I heard Sinner, it really sank in that there is a lot of awesome music being made now, not just the stuff on the (mainstream) radio.  From there it was a pretty direct route to Radio 3.

    getting into R3

My story is in my profile but basically I was researching Basia Bulat after seeing her open for Great Lake Swimmers at the Black Sheep Inn back in 2006 I think.

It turned out I could listen to most of her stuff on the Radio3 website.  That was the first I had heard of it and I never looked back.

How I Got To CBC Radio Threeee

Doing data entry at work and needed some tunes.  Tried out the international section on iTunes radio and boy they play some terrible music in some European countries.  So ended up at CBC 3 which was cool until Bison's "The Curse" came on and I was hooked!!!!!!!  (That enough !!!!!!!!!'s?).  Listened exclusively to Lisa for a while 'cause Chris Alscher's voice scared me whenever else I tuned in but eventually got hooked to all day long and all the other DJ's and artists.  My friends think I'm obsessed with Canada but where else can I hear so much amazing music all day long?

Grade 7 - 22 years ago I was listening to Judas Priest in my backyard in Regina; Zen Gargazitus rides up and asks me, "Why are listening to that shit?! Here, listen to this.; my first mix tape opened up with The Cramps' "Can Your Pussy Do The Dog"

Grade 8 - 21 years ago I walked into my school dance and Regina's Fall Down Go Boom were playing. Again Zen was running around getting us kids not to stand in line, arms crossed, and stair but to "START FUCKING DANCING".

Grade 9 - 20 years ago and I am teling lies about how good of a drummer I am. Brad King calls me out on the lie. I buy a drum kit that summer and learn how to play to U2's Under a Blood Red Sky. My mom made me play outside at the bottom of the driveway amongst the wasp nests.

Grade 23 - 6 years ago I am playing Rise (improvised revolving door of musicians) show at the Sugarbowl in Edmonton. James Carson, this golliath kid playing a small piano, schools me about musical space and time and making love. I felt raw afterwords. Changed passion midstream.

    Groceries

I've mostly heard grosheries.  Perhaps grosseries is a remnant of Canadian Dainty?  In which case, the rest of us have moved on.

Sadly, I cannot find a link to explain what Canadian Dainty is.  Basically, it's a sociolect (language variant associated with a social group) that was used by upper and upper middle class people in central Canada until the middle of this century that involved a lot of British pronounciations.  (I may have the details of who and where wrong, it's been a long time since I took the class where I learned this.)

Relatedly, I know a guy my age from Ontario who insists on ad-VER-tiss-ment rather than ad-ver-TIZE-ment.  I don't recall how he pronounces groceries.

re: TCNH: Listener Co-Host Initiative w/ Maureen "mynameismoe" Chandler

I think it was probably my older brother who got me into music, as he had a fairly extensive record (vinyl in those days) collection. When I was first getting into music, "indie" took really a LOT of dedication to hunt down and find out. The closest things were probably the smaller labels like nettwerk (in those days they were), stiff, and true north.

My focus on canadian indie music came with my discovery of the New Pornographers, when I first heard the song Mass Romantic and started searching for info about them. That led me to New Music Canada and the Just Concerts pages (which were separate websites under the auspices of the CBC), and then the Roots Music Canada page as well.

I first ordered by mail from Mint records and it was super-cheap $12 per CD including shipping, and then found Zunior.com (my personal fave for Canadian music - wish more artists were available from them. I can't use iTunes because I'm a Linux type and Apple hates Linux)

They said that in central canada, dainties is used in some places for lingerie or underwear.

In the west, it means fancy baked goods. So, if someone from the West were to go to one of these other places and say they're bringing dainties to a party, they'd get some funny looks.

    oh, the "dainties" question!

absotively: hilarious.  i think we've talked about dainties on this blog before (maybe a long time ago), as an indicator of a person being from the prairies... i will proudly admit that the use of "dainties" continues unabashedly in at least Manitoba... it wasn't until I moved to Ottawa and was baking for university bakesales that my first blank looks/looks of horror/raised eyebrows at my inquiries re. how many dozens of dainties I could bring.  one person said that "dainties" sounded like it should be name for women's underwear.

anyhooch.  here's the thing, when I asked, well, what do YOU call them, the answer was, "I don't know, squares, sweets, baking...".  BUT COME ON, dainties is descriptive.  Little brownies and butter tarts, possibly on little paper doilies/in paper muffin cups.  look kind dainty, don't they?

anyone else from the prairies here?  let's talk dainties!

    (Aboot, hah!)

I was a translator for quite a while. That's why I know that English is the most irregularly spelled language in the world. For its pronunciations.

Just invert this statement: English is, thus, the most irregularly pronounced language, given its spelling. Same train, going both ways. (through, though, cough, tough. I rest my case)

That's just a ittle reminder before anyone gets too dogmatic about "proper" pronunciation. Ain'ty no such thing: it's English, you see...

Years from now we'll all be talking about the day we pushed this blog to the hilt. And your grandchildren will say, "What's a blog you old loser?"

This is quite a treat to listen to. I have been in and out today but hearing lots of great stuff. Rose Cousins makes me weak in the knees and Ray Legere on mandolin is the best (would you guess I'm a mandolin player).

Doing a fine job Moe. There is so much great music coming out of PEI these days you could probably fill the whole show with it. Glad to hear your picks!

gah! more comments while i was writing that last one! you all are fast with this here blogging stuff! can i say again that this was an intense amount of fun? i can't believe all of the comments! everyone was on fire!

@mandorob thanks! i have to admit, it was really hard to single things out. i think this was part of the reason why i got flustered when asked specifics. there is just SO much here that i am so proud of. i really should have had a written list in front of me.

(oh, and my 254 comment to martin was directed at his 234 comment!)

so glad everyone has jumped on the exclamation mark. it really is vital to communication to me apparently?!?!!

i am going to go cry because it is over now... sobsob
