TCNH: 2sday, November 10, 2009!

Posted by Craig Norris on Nov 10, 2009

Hello everybody! The 2sday Song Connections are back...for this week, at least! It's slim pickings on new releases today, so we have a few song connections for you!

One is an examination of the "frenemy", one is winter getaways, and two connections are made through personnel. It's that simple. Or difficult. Depending on how you roll.

Hey, do you have some song connections you'd like to make? Because this may very well happen again and the song connecting should not be left up to us! The connection can be as tenuous as you want it to be. It doesn't even have to be limited to only two songs! Comment below and I'll save them for a rainy show!

Or, if there's a new release that you're excited about, let me know!

    @aadamaa

    It's simple you take some songs and connect them via any way you can think of. No specific rules other than they have to be on the R3 playlist.

    Yay for simplicity! (i.e. lack of rules/guide-lines)

    I'm not really big on rules.

    That's how the Craigger rolls.

    Fourth Comment!!!

    My connection goes like this:

    Ox - Unknown Legend

    Great Lake Swimmers - Bodies + Minds

    Okay so if you didn't click the linky-dohickeys for the songs you won't know the connection is both songs videos were directed by the same guy John Alden Milne. But also the connection is two awesome songs, and two great videos.

    I notice that OX doesn't have Unknown Legend up on the NMC page, so Miss Idaho will suffice - also a very great song.

    And even if Craig doesn't use the connection, I think all you should fall in love with OX like I have in the last week.

    I hate to call you out on the blog like this, but in your user pic, your comment says "good crokinole technique at the cottage".

    According to Mr Crokinole himself, the proper Crok-nique for a shot is:"A crokinole shot is accomplished by firmly holding the end of your index or middle finger against the thumb and then flicking or snapping it against the disc in order to propel the disc across the playing surface"

    Sorry to call you out like this, but I just want to avoid that awkward moment that one day when we're going tête à tête in a rousing game of crokinole whilst eating stale cheesies.

    Plus the proper shooting style will save on Lee Press-On nails.

  15. Craig Norris
    15

    "Press-On"?

    Is that the correct pronunciation of "Hower"?

    Yes. Comedy jokes are funny.

    Tis' the season to procrastinate and buy your gifts at the last moment

    Okay well according to the retail industry the Christmas season is upon us and despite my best effort to ignore it I have to think about gifts and such. Anyways I am thinking about those folks that go to the convience store or gas station on December 24th to buy their gifts for people and I thought I would make a list of things they may purchase via song titles!!

    Maps by Julie Fader.

    Pop N Chips by More or Les

    A travel pack of toothpaste and a toothbrush to make someones teeth "Whiter/Straigher" by Adaline (okay doesn't make it straigher, but whatever)

    A reduced price bargain bin poor rated generic "Romantic Comedy (by Stars)" on DVD.

    And perhaps a lottery "Ticket to Immortality" by The Dears

    That's all I got right now. Anyone got any more feel free to add. You know I love the collaborations!

    I just re-listened to the John Doe & the Sadies "country club" last night on the record player.  Still a fun listen.

    So I connect some kathleen Edwards with some Sadies, as they both are on it. How bout some old school Kathleen, like "One more song the radio won't like" with that Sadies tune wtih Neko Case.  Then you could connect on some New Pornographers as well, I'll leave that one up to you.

    You have no idea how badly I want to see that Cons anniversary show.  I don't care what anyone says, they're the pioneers of Canadian indie-rock over the past decade.  More influential than the Arcade Fire, honestly. Easily the best live show still touring in a van these days.

    $100—off topic question

    I saw $100 last Wednesday, and they were fantastic.  However, the audience had an unusually high number of people-who-talked-through-both-sets.  I'm curious if it's something about $100 that attracted them, or if it was the venue that attracted them (it was the first time I'd been there), or if maybe the weird shape of the venue just caused the talkers to be closer to the front than usual.

    So, in the interests of satisfying my curiousity, who else has seen $100?  And was the audience unusually chatty?

    But, picture like you are snapping your fingers. Turn your hand on your side. Place the piece between your thumb and forefinger, and then lay your hand so the piece is flat on the board, and SNAP — that is how Mr. Crokinole showed me how to shoot.

    And you can get some wicked 'house clearing' trajectories this way.

    Gots a release for you!

    Tonight at the Dakota Tavern, Joshua Cockerill officially releases his wonderful debut album, "The Trick With Your Heart I'm Learning To Do". I was lucky enough to pick up a copy a few weeks ago and have been spinning the heck out of it - soooo good!

    The album features a star studded line up with guest appearances by Serena Ryder, Justin Rutledge, Jack Marks, Greg Cockerill, and Dustin Bentall, among others.

I do see "Turn Up the Stars" up there, and that's cool too as I believe it's about life on other planets, or matters of the heart, I dunno.

    The "I hate your province" connection.

    Well, sort of.  Not really.

    What about Will Currie & the Country French/Ontario, and The Weakerthans/One Great City?

    Okay, now that I've typed it out that seems really tenuous.  Well, one is about hating Winnipeg and the other is about Ontario not taking kindly to strangers.  Can we connect them on the basis that neither is true?  Winnipeg's not so bad (although I haven't been there since the late 90's, and that was in February, so clearly I'm giving the Peg a LOT of leeway), and Ontario likes strangers just fine, thanks.  Although honestly I can really only speak for Ottawa.  You're welcome, Ottawa.

    Really Old Releases

    My co-worker (Who just happens to be from Cape Breton) just handed me one of those old hand labeled Chad Vangaalen CDs he gave her when he was here in LA trying out for some TV show she was casting in 2003.  It sounds great!  Does anyone think hand labeled early releases will ever be worth anything as collector items?  Obviously to the music lover they're priceless.  But will they be sought out like super rare vinyl in the future?  I've got a few from pals in LA who've gone on to some success and I cherish those things.

    re: TCNH: 2sday, November 10, 2009!

    no, but I've got English in-laws who like to say "Tyewsday" instead of "Toosday" like we tend to do here in Canada.

    They also say "styewpid"

    And, miraculously, an English childran's book can manage to rhyme "paw" and "floor"

    I really hope things like that will be worth something.  I've collected some signatures and such on random things throughout the year, including a picture Chad Van drew on a shirt.  If they raise in value at all, I'll be sitting on a canadian indie gold mine! ....worth a few hundred bucks which is equivalent to what I probably paid in the first place.

    I also collect ticket stubs whenever possible, proof that I actually did see them play before stadium tours.

    I never really realized how many rough CD-Rs of Vancouver bands' infant shows I had until now.

    So jealous!  Have fun!  Maybe you should save a ticket for Babs46 in case she makes it out too?  Maybe she and Craig can carpool!

    I'm not sure. I think it must be British.  Either way it makes me cringe.

    Or Texans "all y'all"

    So HERE is a picture of my Tweed and Tie Tuesday. I hope I meet all of your approval.

    Haha... nice. But next month you should wear one of those skinny ties. And bring a bubble pipe, like Ashley says.

    I won't lie.

    I'm kind of turned on by that picture.

    That's right I said it.

    @keydive!

    very nice!  very nice!

    you know, my boss may be unwittingly participating in Tweed and Tie Tuesday today... I believe I caught a glimpse of him in tweed just moments ago...

    Is that your beaker face?

    Also: sexy.

    @hgummo

    Seriously, a bubble pipe would class that get-up right up.

    I know, hey? It's the only thing missing... with that bubble pipe he would be unstoppable. And also a lot more hilarious.

    @hgummo

    You know what. We all need bubble pipes for our day-to-day lives.  I am going to go on a hunt to find some.

    We can start the newest fashion trend.

    How about a monocle to class it up a bit. I just happen to have one of those in my pocket for no apparent reason.

    Deal. The next show we go to we are wearing monocles and bringing bubble pipes. We will be the coolest ones there by far.

    @keydive

    Yes! Go with the monocle.

    Soon it can be Tweed and Tie and Monocle and Bubble Pipe Tuesday. or TaTaMaBT for short.

    112

    @hgummo

    We already are the coolest there by far. We already are.

    I like your use of acronyms! I also think TaTaMaBPT is an initiavive I could see myself getting behind.

    @RnRL

    We are? Really? I mean, I knew we were the coolest ones there, but I wasn't aware that we'd already achieved the by far status. My measuring tactics must be faulty.

    @hgummo

    Okay fine. We were the coolest ones there by a bit. But with a bubble pipe it'll be BY FAR. Add the monocle and it's not even fair to be in the same category as everyone else.

    re: TCNH: 2sday, November 10, 2009!

    I dunno. The monacle then leads to carrying a walking stick as well, and then a top hat, which will never do with tweed, so then you're into tux and tails...

    and then there's the giant peanut costume as well

    What if one was to find a tweed top hat that matched there jacket?

    I think you'd want a bowler or pork pie hat instead of a top hat, though. Something more like Mr. Steed
