Please, Please, Please... Let Me Find Out for Myself

Posted by Lisa Christiansen on Nov 09, 2009

I am a raging hypocrite today. Not that this hasn't happened to me before (Walt Whitman: "Do I contradict myself? / Very well then I contradict myself / (I am large, I contain multitudes)"), but it never sits well. Thing is, I've always hated people who won't watch a TV show right away and then complain when people talk about it. It's in the public domain now; you can't stop it.

But last night I failed to watch the final episode of Mad Men. I was tired and I like to give my full attention to all the nuances of this very nuanced drama. And now I have to avoid co-workers like Jordan "You-didn't-see-it? Oh-it-was-so-good!" Kawchuk and avoid all media until I can get home. Luckliy by the time you read this I'll have taken it all in... and be so ready to talk and re-hash. Look out tomorrow, Jordan.

Good thing I'm stuck in Booth 22 listening to music and having a one-sided conversation with all of you. There could easily be a spoiler amongst you. I know your kind... because that's usually me.

    I didn't see it either, so no spoilers here.

    I'm probably the only person on the planet who has never seen an episode of Mad Men. Or Seinfeld.

    I've read about them, tho.

    I still like to think that some people will respect that you haven't gotten around to it. I mean, if it comes out before you can make them aware that you haven't but are planning to see/read it then, well, it sucks but you've had a chance to see it so it's too bad for you. I find it annoying when you say "Oh, I haven't seen/read that yet but it's on my list." then they procede to say how this was great or that such and such happened. Especially if it's not within the context of a large group all talking about the tv show/movie/book in question.

    I'm just thinking how my friend's gf randomly commented on some things that happen in Harry Potter offhandedly, right after I had meantioned I hadn't gotten around to reading the last book. It was something like someone mentioned something about the movies, I said something like "oh, I really need to get around to reading that last book" and then she gave away what I can guess are major plot points. I guess it has been a long time but that just feels uncool. (although, I suppose the Harry Potmaster isn't the coolest)

    Just in case...

    I won't spoil anything, but I've watched that final episode now so I can read any and all comments.

    I've got to say cathyort, I can understand the Mad Men...but Seinfeld?? Really? I have memorized entire episodes of this show; I am on fifth and sixth viewings of some episodes. I will stop here. But do yourself a favour and get at it. But can I also say how jealous I am of you, to think you get to watch both of these shows from start to finish (should you want to), what a lot of fun ahead!

    If someone had of ruined Battlestar Galactica (the new one) for me when I was watching it I would of lost my mind and done something dramatic so that maybe my brain would forget whatever I had just heard.

    No matter who you are, if you like sci-fi or not, Battlestar Galactica is the best show on television. Find it, watch it and be merry. It is great.

    @Yort

    Here's a statistical anomaly.

    I have never seen Mad Men nor but a few minutes of Seinfeld.  We're both near DET and listen to  Radio 3.  Take a moment to digest that.  Okay, I don't know what it means either.

    Hannah Georgas You've Got A Place Called Home was playing earlier while my "adopted little brother"/neighbour kid was over and he said "Hey, that's the Wal-Mart song!"  How cool was that?

    @cathyort @CDNz1 I'm relately Seinfeld-free as well, except for a few episodes that I've watched at friends' houses while bumming around. Mad Men, never seen it. However, I'm not a TV person and haven't followed a show since before 24 crashed and burned.

    @ninja burger : Battlestar Gallactica was indeed a very good show! I watched a lot of the series on DVD. got my fanatical friend who introduced me to the show a shirt with the logo on it and he still gives me updates on the series, or rather now, the upcoming movies.

    Since my free cable was cruelly taken away by Shaw in October I've missed all the tv there is to miss, but especially my beloved Mad Men, and now have to wait for the whole bloody season to come out on DVD so I can catch up....so.....hopefully no one spoils it for me!

    @CDNz1, kn0ttyn3rb

    It is nice to know I'm not the only one! I'm not a TV snob, I just got out of the habit of watching some years ago and for the life of me can never remember something like "Oh it's eight o'clock on Wednesday night, time to watch (fill in the blank)."

    I'll just have to save catching up on all these shows for my orchid-growing years.

    @CDNz1:  spoooooky.

    Wow, Hannah Georgas in a Wal-Mart commercial?

    Uh oh. Banjo. Swoon time.

    Never seen Mad Man. Big Seinfeld fan, though. That and the Simpsons. I think it's still better than most of the stuff out there, even after 19 (or is it 20?) years

    I got Movie Central last Winter, under the assumption that we'd cancel it come Spring, which never happened. now I find I just watch movies or the odd HBO series. I was quite annoyed because I just started watching Flight of the Conchords and they pulled it from the HBO on-demand.

    Hey Lisa,

    Knowing you're a Grey's fan since you talk about it from time to time, did you notice for the last two week's the show has opened with a Metric song. Victory for Canadian music in the American television world! Sweet!

    Grey's has always been very good to Canadian indie music. The first season was practically all Tegan and Sara and I've also heard Patrick Watson, the Dears and Lullaby Baxter. You can full play lists at wikipedia.

    I had a friend come in the office the other day who used to be on Battlestar! Pretty fun for the fans in the office.

    That's pretty sweet, I would of had a nerd fit! I actually got to meet Callum Keith Rennie at the Economy Shoe Shop, he was an awesome guy and it made me like him even more. Normally I'd let celebs have their peace and quite but when it comes to BSG... I really nerd out.
