Live on CBC Radio 3 with Grant Lawrence: Top 5 Must-See Live Gigs of the Weekend!

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Nov 27, 2009

Coming up today on Grant Lawrence Live, 2PM ET / 11AM PT on CBC Radio 3's web radio/Sirius 86:

We are down to our last 72 hours until the polls close on our Bucky Awards shortlist voting for 2009, and since our Friday show is all about playing it live or not at all, today we'll take a very close look at our Bucky Awards Shortlist for the best live band... and the nominees are...

Elliott Brood... Hey Rosetta!... Joel Plaskett... Mother Mother... Library Voices... which brings us to our...

Poll Question of the Day:

WHICH ONE OF THOSE ARTISTS IS THE BEST LIVE ACT IN CANADA?

Have you seen all 5 bands? Which band is the best of those five? Which is overrated live? Let us know what you think by posting on our blog or emailing feedback@cbcradio3.com, or twitter @cbcradio3.

OUR TOP 5 MUST SEE GIGS OF THE WEEKEND:

Fri Nov 27, The Arkells, Toronto, ON - Welcome home the Arkells from their Canadian tour with back to back nights at the newly renovated Lee’s Palace with opener The Novaks.

Fri Nov 27, King Khan and BBQ, Saskatoon SK – Pile into Saskatchewan’s sin-bin, Amigo’s Cantina, to catch this garage-rock duo pull off things musically most full bands can’t/won't do.

Fri Nov 27, The Hidden Cameras, Edmonton AB – Lay witness to the original gay-folk pop ensemble at the Avenue Theatre with opener Gentleman Reg.

Sat Nov 28, Sunparlour Players, Nelson, BC – Rural Ontario meets rural BC at The Royal this weekend. Make sure to stop by the SPs' merch table to purchase some of their homemade preserves.

Sat Nov 28, Woodhands, Vancouver, BC – It may be an early show but it doesn’t mean you won’t be dancing at The Biltmore to this hard hitting duo with opener Vincent Parker.

Did we miss anything? Let us know what you are doing this weekend by posting your comments to our blog or emailing feedback@cbcradio3.com. You can also Twitter us @cbcradio3.

    Shows

I'm missing a bunch of shows this weekend in Calgary as I'm going to Victoria tonight until Monday. The one that I'm really bummed about it You Say Party! We Say Die! at the HiFi. I've been looking forward to that show ever since I bought their album and then I went and booked my trip on the weekend they're here. Damn.

Also, The Hidden Cameras and Gentleman Reg are playing at Broken City on Saturday night and Woodhands is playing at Broken City tonight. What a weekend to be away!

    Hey Ocean! Tomorrow

Well, I won't be seeing them open up for The Cat Empire at The Bronson Centre but I will be seeing Hey Ocean! at Bands Undone. I will do an audio interview with them. I'm still thinking of questions to come up with. Hmmm, I hope Putzy is not reading my comment. ;)

AND, (I should've probably posted this first - good thing my wife doesn't watch the blog)

My lovely wife and I are going out to a fondue restaurant here in Toontown on account of it being our 14 wedding anniversary this past Wednesday.

    In London this weekend…

    Both at Call The Office:

    • Tonight: Olenka & The Autumn Lovers / Great Bloomers / Hooded Fang

    • Tomorrow: DJ Champion

Sadly I can't be at either night, but that's some pretty great weekend lined up, no?

Which brings me to my point, why does London always get over looked? Even when I send suggestions along.

    I'm so ashamed

I don't know how, but I haven't seen any of the bands nominated for best live act. It actually  makes me sad every time I vote for the Buckys and I have to skip that category. I can imagine that they're all great, and I want to see them all, but sadly I cannot weigh in.

    Saw 3.5/5

I saw 3 in a half out of the 5 acts. The ones I saw were Elliott Brood, Joel Plaskett and Library Voices LIVE this year. The 0.5 is Mother Mother because I only saw them on soundcheck at Ottawa Bluesfest this year. Hmmm, this is a hard choice because I enjoyed Elliott Brood and Library Voices because both acts were energetic live. My pick will have to be Elliott Brood because I got to interview them and was happy use wooden spoons and a tin plate. Plus, I loved their decoration with their own banner and their own lights.

    Random new website suggestion

It would be really awesome if 90-second eggs and Canadian dictionary entries showed up as two entries in the playlist; one for the egg/entry and one for the song that ends the thing.  That way the song could have a working artist link, add button, etc.

  38. hgummo
    38

    @BritHayCity

I know, hey? I love it when bands seem genuinely excited to be playing and grateful that people are there to see them. When a band seems arrogant or "above" their fans it's a major turn off for me.

Yeah, Broken City is great! Did you happen to catch Winter Gloves there on Wednesday? Ashley (rocknrollloser) went and said it was pretty epic. I was supposed to go but I got sick and went to bed at 9 instead :P.

  39. TheRadioHead
    39

Library Voices for best live act!

    Since I nominated them!

Honestly though, Elliott Brood is also the best, but I really want to give a new, enthusiastic, hard working band a leg up.

Tonight is my company Christmas party, and since it is the only thing they give us, I intend to eat and drink my body weight.

Tomorrow is King Kahn at the Albert.  It is also art and craft sale season, I have three that I have been invited to tomorrow alone!

Shame on you Grant...I expected you to put THE ACTION at the top of the list this week, especially since they are playing your favorite bar in Canada!!!

A band reuniting after 30 years apart takes precedence over all this shizza (though there are obviously lots of good shows happening this weekend):

THE ACTION - allegedly Ottawa's first punk band!

Witness an original member reunion of this seminal '77 punk band!!!

Returning with the band, will be a limited reissue of the ACTION LP!!!

    THE ACTION w/ White Wires

    Saturday, November 28th (9PM)

    THE ACTION w/ Suppositories

    Sunday, November 29th (matinee)

Both shows at The Dominion Tavern (OTTAWA, ON)

    Live Show Bucky Poll...

Woot Woot!  I have tickets for the Arkells / Novaks show tonight!  So so SO EXCITED!

As for the poll question....  My top two LIVE favourites are in this list - Joel Plaskett & Hey Rosetta!

Seeing Joel - in my experience - is such a relaxing and entertaining time.  My face usually hurts from smiling by the time he wraps it up. He spills charm and charisma all over the stage.

BUT - my votes have been swayed toward Hey Rosetta! Since they are newer on the scene, I feel they need more support., where JP has got it down already.  Plus  Hey Rosetta! shows are so energetic and powerful...  they really do make music go into your lungs and heart and blood and all around.  No false avertising there!

  42. Paul's Wharf
    42

    To answer the Poll Question...

We've had two of the Best Live Act nominees, Hey Rosetta! and Elliott Brood, and both shows were stallar. But the Brood show especially won the locals hearts. I've never received so many emails and phone calls thanking me for bringing them in. St. George loves Elliott Brood!

    Poll question

I've been switching between Elliot Brood & Library Voices but mostly Elliot since I feel they're the ones on there that put in a bit more effort in making the performance something more, something memorable.

I dunno, I'm not super pumped on the list as I was hoping it'd have a bit more of what I mentioned above. People who don't just have great stage presence and high energy but take it that extra step further to make it a real all around show. Still, all the bands up there put on great live performances, just, I'd say there are bands that really take the effort for show.

Case in point, Hank and Lily! They are my starling example of putting in that extra step to make their live act a real show. I'm trying to think of some others but I'm drawing a blank...

I have seen all of these artists at the Habitat in Kelowna in the last year and a bit... they were ALL awesome... though there was something special thaa happend at Joel's show in May... but I highly recommend all of these artists live!

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 with Grant Lawrence: Top 5 Must-See Live Gigs of the Weekend!

I've seen everyone but Plaskett and they all put on solid live shows.  The top two in my opinion are Elliot Brood and Library Voices.  These two groups put on some solid high energy performances.  Elliot Brood must get props for their use of props to get the audience involved.  Library Voices got the crowd so riled up when I saw them with the lead singer diving into the crowd and climbing the tower of amps all while singing.  I got a good pic of him on the amps and I'll post it on my profile.

Shows in Victoria this weekend are Immaculate Machine with Yukon Blonde tonight at Lucky Bar.

    Best Live Show?

I've seen four of the bands nominated, all but Library Voices, and I'm having a hard time choosing the best!  I think it comes down to Elliott Brood and Joel Plaskett.  They're very different experiences though, so I don't think I can choose one over the other, I've been alternating my votes every day!

I've only seen Mother Mother (at DCMF - they put on a great live show), and I hope to see Hey Rosetta! on Wenesday. The best show I've ever seen, however, has got to be YSP!WSD!, who played Ottawa a week or two ago.

    SO. MUCH. AMAZING. !

    Best Live Act

I have only seen two artists out of the shortlist Elliot Brood, and Mother Mother. Both were spectacular, but i give my vote to mother mother. They got the whole crowd singing and moving it was very energetic and the best show i went to this summer

  57. BritHayCity

    Agreed

No i didnt catch them, I wish i could just roll into broken city every night because i feel like i dont go there near enough, always missing good shows! Thats too bad you were sick, hopefully youre feeling better.

they kinda have to be at an all-ages/outdoor/camping sort of thing for me to see them, like Ness Creek.

I didn't see Library Voices, but heard them over the trees a couple of years ago at Ness. They sounded good!

I saw Joel Plaskett at the We Are Many festival in Saskatoon two years ago as well. He put on a really good show.

One of the wildest live acts I've seen recently is the Tom Fun Orchestra.

I've seen 4 of the 5 acts, the only I missed was Elliot Brood (and I'm still kinda bitter about missing their show too)  All of them put on great shows.  Hey Rosetta! is probably my favourite of the bunch but for best live show I've been sending my votes to LV

    I've seen 2 of the 5 live

At the exact same venue, to the tables are square, and my vote goes to Elliott Brood. Hands down, best live act no question.

But, I have seen 3 of the 5 on the MuchMusic broadcast for Polaris Gala. My answer remains the same.

    Stop! Arretez!

You are all getting me way too geeked for Elliott Brood tonight!

Also, I had to share this story: after spending Thanksgiving morning as Listener Co-Host, I went to my sister's for dinner. My nephew was home from Ithaca College and his girlfriend Mandy was there: who, it turns out, is not only Canadian (Sudbury native, going to university in St. Catherine's), listens to the R3 and has seen the Brood, Arkells, and more! Can you say died and went to conversational heaven?

I have seen Joel, Elliot Brood and Mother Mother, and all of them are excellent live. My vote goes to Mother Mother though, simply because I was never really much of a fan until I saw them live - and they converted me.

On a different note, another good show in Edmonton tonight is You Say Party! We Say Die! at New City.... which I will be attending if I can kick my King Khan hangover.....

    69

Ya, I have seen them all

3 of the 5 more than once.  Some more than twice.

Seeing Mother Mother was interesting, it was in the summer of 2007, when they were just beginning to tour Touch Up.  It was a small free stage at the Jazz Festival, I had no idea who they were, and neither did anyone else, as there were just a handful of people there.

It has been interesting to watch them grow and evolve in that time.  I could already see seeds of discontent between some band members, one giving the other one the stink eye...

This weekend will consist mostly of promoting the heck out of Adaline and the Peak Performance Project, as the voting ends on Monday. If anyone is in Swift Current, I'll be the overly enthusiastic girl wandering around the malls handing out flyers. Vote here - www.peakperformanceproject.com :)

As for best live act, I've seen all of them but Joel. My vote has to go to Library Voices, partially because they're from Saskatchewan and I've got to support the music scene here, and also because they blew me away when I saw them open for Hawksley Workman in July, and again with Julie Fader and Inflight Safety in October. They never cease to amaze me with their energy and pure awesomeness. I'm really hoping I can make it to their Christmas show this year, too - I'm sure it will be incredible.

  75. 124th Street Beat
    75

    King Khan in the 'chuck

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, although the level of enjoyment might have been elevated by my slightly excessive beer consumption. I suspect this show might get mixed reviews - those familiar with the band and the songs probably liked it, the newbies (of which I was with a few) not so much. They played their songs well, but didn't interact too much with the crowd - which I think makes it harder for those unfamiliar with a band to get into them - but hey, they have been playing how many nights in a row now? Did they have a break between Vancouver and Calgary? I can't remember.

Hard to stop thinking about the fox head cod piece though.

I'm seeing Two Hours Traffic in St. Catharines tonight!!!! I can't believe a band I like is actually coming. It's going to be amazing!

Haven't seen any of them :(

Sadly I have not seen any of the top 5 play live. I almost went to see Joel but the firend who was supposed to buy tickets couldn't go in the end... But my friend saw him in Kelowna and called me 3 times during the show and just held her phone out for me to listen to him...

I really need to see more live music, I don't get out to many shows at all.

Purely accidental, the brain is not functioning at a high enough level to purposly pull that one off - thanks though.

i have seen Mother Mother, Eliiot Brood and Hey Rosetta! live, and i have to say that my favourite is definetly Hey Rosetta! I do have to mention that Elliot Brood really weren't given the opportunity to perform-it was a mid-day show on Canada Day, and the audience was mostly families.

Yes...King Khan and BBQ (esp. BBQ) were jerks. The week before the show I was listening to Mark Sultan's album repeatedly. Haven't been able to listen to it since the show because he was a jerk to Lana and to all the listeners. That totally sucks cuz I was enjoying that album quite a bit...

My wife is a Buttertart fanatic. And also picky about the inside.I had no idea they were a Canadian invention?! Thank you CBCR3 for filling in the gaps in my edumokayshun.

I'm really much too lazy to make pastry. I make a recipe I got from my mom called butter tart squares, that are made on a crust that's very similar to shortbread (mmm...shortbread - one of my favourites. Now, that, I know comes from Scotland)

    Rose Cousins

we did end up going to that show Wednesday night.

I was reminded of Bio Spice the whole show.   Rose could be her 3rd sister, the  resemblance is so uncanny, and so is the humour.

    @Grant

I think you might be right (about them being jerks that is). I felt a bit sorry for Lana trying to control them on the air earlier this week, and they didn't do anything last night that made me think that they aren't usually like that. Doesn't mean I don't like their music though, and you are right about several nights in a row not being an excuse, I guess I am just expressing sympathy pains.

    butter tarts

Do my ears deceive me or were there excerpts from a segment from Q on butter tarts in that Canadian Dictionary bit? I've never had a butter tart, but they sure look good.

What a lovely suggestion Grant! Believe it or not I was living in Edmonton for just over a year and the only live shows I went to was the FolkFest last summer, AMAZING tho. I am now living in Lethbridge AB and would love to find a show buddy or two to traipse around southern AB and listen to music with.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 with Grant Lawrence: Top 5 Must-See Live Gigs of the Weekend!

I go to shows a lot, but I've only seen three out of the five acts. I've seen Joel Plaskett, Hey Rosetta! and Elliott Brood a number of times ansd they never disappoint. But I've missed the other two acts and have only myself to blame for this. I almost saw Library Voices at the Horseshoe this summer when Vanessa and I went to Toronto and did our co-hosting duties with Craig Norris. Sadly, we got into the city a bit too late, and the show had ended by the time we arrived at the Shoe. Similarly, I was in Boston and was happy to find out that Sam Roberts and Mother Mother were playing. I had A LOT of trouble finding the venue, so I missed Mother Mother's set. I was really sad talking to the bands afterwards and sheepishly admitting that I hadn't actually caught Mother Mother's performance.

    My vote: Elliott Brood!

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 with Grant Lawrence: Top 5 Must-See Live Gigs of the Weekend!

I have seen 4 out of the 5, which I find kind of amazing because I havn't even been to that many shows lately... Joel Plaskett years ago when he was opening for the Hip in Halifax (I fell in love), Hey Rosetta at their free Junofest show in Van (lots of great energy), Library Voices at the Railway Club (ditto), and Mother Mother just recently opening for Matt Good... after hearing Mother Mother live, I was dissapointed that they weren't nominated for best vocals!  Somehow I had to hear it live to belive it...

I have had so much trouble chosing my favourite!  I've been switching between Hey Rosetta and Library Voices though.

And I really need to see Elliott Brood!

    King Khan & BBQ

I dunno, they honestly acted almost exactly like I expected them to. That's just who they are, I don't think they were being malicious or anything and I thought the interview was fun to listen to. You guys are making want to re-listen to it because I feel like I missed where they went from being a little off-the-wall and uncooth (what with the burping) to being flat out jerkfaces. It still felt like Lana was having a bit of fun to me.

I thought there was a segment on Q a few weeks ago with a British lady who was looking for the best butter tarts. My ears HAD deceived me.

I have had too many opportunities to see Joel Plasket but something always comes up such as work or I move....Antigonish, Ottawa, Vancouver but lone and behold he is coming to Prince George, BC and I have tickets so although I missed all the other shows Joel Plaskett at Coldsnap is it!

Yes, they did treat her poorly

I squirmed for much of that interview, but Lana kept it together for sure.

I hate food sounds on the radio, and the the finger licking, and belching were not humorous.

I felt for Lana, and because it probably felt a lot longer for her than it did to us.

I agree with Winnipeg Pat.  I was uncomfortable with the interview too.  Matter of fact, she said it perfectly.
