Grant? Is that really you? Welcome back, mate!

Listen to lyrics?  Heck yeah.  Not only to I listen to them, I try to understand just what message writer is trying to convey.

Considering that, why does everything AC Newman write sounds great - but makes no sense?

On first listen I never pay attention to the lyrics, but after awhile they sink in and I really appreciate when a band like Hey Ocean! or the Arkells sing about "stuff" and there's something to follow. It's amazingly prevelant in Canadian music, and I'm sure if I really thought about it, all my favorite bands from my youth to now had decent lyrics I never really thought about (Mike Patton being the exception, cool lyrics even if they make no sense).

I did get disheartened when I realized that I Mother Earth's lyrics were just gibberish. Still a great load of instrumentals, though.

I hate when I hear lyrics wrong when i listen to a song...it gets stuck in my head that way...This is why I love when musician put the lyrics in their liner notes...(or online)...I LOVE liner notes...the artwork and lyrics combine and its iike a little package of poems...or nonsense, because really, some songs without the music are just strange.    --- my front runners in the lyrics category are Dan Mangan and Said The Whale. Sold and Camilo are very different songs...I'll probably be trading votes back and forth during voting.

I'm having a hard time with the long list.  Nothing really stands out to me.  My personal favoriate for this year, which I tried to nominate is from Great Lake Swimmers - Pulling on a Line:

The line, it writes itself across the dark sky,

In the electric flushes ending with a sigh,

It weaves itself into a fabric so true

and flows just like the river, graceful and blue

    Do I listen to lyrics?

For sure I do. The ones I can distinguish anyway.

I have a terrible ear for them, so often it's not a deal breaker for me. But, I really do like when that layer of the song is accessible to me either in listening or in the liner notes of the song. Like a good note, a lyric can be that piece that forever connects me to that song.

I have a question for best lyric that never got answered. I nominated another song of the new Amy Milan album. I wasn't sure if it was her lyric cause I know she's got some covers on there…

    So, I am asking you:

    1) is the song Bound Amy's?

    and if so,

    2) how is this lyric "I'd rather love you than leave you, my darlin', But lovin's just not what we do, So, as hard as a habit and as cold as my heart, I'm breakin' this forever for now" not worthy of the long list?

And… Favourite lyric of all time… oooh that's a toughie. Leave it with me while I try and get in on that sweater draw!

    Hey Hey,

If you ask me listening to the lyrics is crucial getting into a song (with lyrics of course). I figure they are there for a reason, ya know? It may take a few listens but is normally worth it.

I'll make this quick. Here is my best lyric moment: About two years ago my roommate was chilling watching CSI. You may or may not know that the intro song is The Who's 'Who are you'. Well she definitely thought the lyrics were not "Who are you" but "Cool water" she was singing along at the top of her lungs and it was just hilarious.

I listen to lyrics, I may not try to pick them apart too often but I like to think I know at least a little bit of the difference of good from bad lyrics. I really like it when a song or even a whole album weaves a story like Rock Plaza Central does loosely as well as Great Lake Swimmers and Final Fantasy I think. I often like to sing along to my favourite songs (and I might use it as vocal practise to a small degree) trying to pick out the pitch and match it as well as the correct lyrics. All I can say is that it's really hard but makes solo car rides a lot more fun.

  14. Benoit from Ottawa

    How important are lyrics?

In Death and Satan Metal? I imagine not very, seeing as you can't even make out the language. (Hey, I have cable and sometimes MusiquePlus puts on some o' that jarring stuff!..)

In regular rock, halfway important. Often, you can make them out enough to get the chorus.

    Pop? Yup, generally important.

Where am I going with this? To "the importance of lyrics varies depending on the genre".

    off topic, but cmon

it's fine to not like a show for whatever reason one likes, that's fair. But in no way does Mad Men glamourize Don Draper's philandering; i don't perceive any commentary within the show one way or another on his adultery. It's a portrayal of a flawed, tragic character and his cheating is just part of who he is.

That being said I was slightly put off when I read recently that Don Draper placed at the top of a survey of the most admired people by men.  While he does have many good characteristics I do think he has been fetishized recently by style magazines and the like recently in an attempt to ride the coattails of the show's success.

Not always. Sometimes I'll just listen for the music and rythm. However, when I sing along or am learning to sing something alone, I pay attention to lyrics to get a sense of the emotion, what it's about, etc.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Trivia Tuesday... and Favourite Lyrics!

Lyrics can go either way with me. I don't have the greatest ear for them...if I haven't deciphered them in a song that i really enjoy then I'll usually go to the liner notes or intertubes to find out what they are.

As I'm typing this though Son the Father is playing; I have no idea what he's singing but I'm still enjoying the heck out of it.

Of course some lyrics are just so damn bad and leave my dumbstruck. A few people mentioned this in this morning's thread "My humps, my humps, my lovely lady lumps" I says 'pardon?'

  20. tb3
    20

    Don Draper / Mad Men

Yah I don't get that either – that he's making adultery "okay". I watch the show religiously and think it's great. Not because I think adultery is great.

The show's creator also was part of the Sopranos braintrust which I also thought was a great show. More morally reprehensible behaviour there too, that didn't open me to a world where whackin' a guy cause he was encroachin' on my ability to 'provide' was okay because I watched TV.

Don Draper is popular because he exudes confidence. People idolize his character because even when he's being his shittiest, he's still sure about it. Though lately they're intent on showing the wizard behind the curtain and revealing the cracks in the facade. Introducing vulnerability.

So really liking that show doesn't make me a cheater on my wife. Cheating does.

    Who's the man now?!

I think if you take the main protagonist out of a lot of shows, they're the kind of cool dudes who do as they please and dont' care about the consequences 'cause that's how we as guys would like to live our lives.

For instance, I love "Californication" and "The Wire", their two main guys Hank Moody and Jimmy McNulty are very similar with how womanizing, alcohol consuming, intelligent, motivated, and darn good looking they are all the while their worlds come crashing down around them. Granted, once the latter's life turned around later in the show he looked happier, became less interesting and as a result wasn't pushed to the forefront as much as previous seasons (I must admit to just being on the last episode of season 4).

Back to the lyrics, you know what else is great? That one where the guy tells the story about New Orleans, then sings a bit. I hear it on my parents' radio all the time. There was a great story behind it that the CBC had on their "CanCon of the 70s - 90s" special awhile back, but evidently it didn't leave enough of an impression for me to remember the name of the song or artist... but I'm sure someone here is enough of a CanCon Encylopedia to know!

    Yes... and no

Lyrics can be very important - if I can understand what they are saying. It usually doesn't bother me too much if I can't really figure out what they are. BUT if I can understand the lyrics and they are bad, I won't be able to listen to the song anymore, even if the rest of the tune is great. Terrible waste of a good song sometimes.

I have always been a fan of the Weakerthans almost more for their lyrics than their songs. I would argue that John K. is one of the best lyricists in Canada. (Along with Dave Bidini and Gord Downie... I know traditional, but there is a reason they are considered quintessentially Canadian).

On a non-Canadian note, also maybe a bit cheesy, but I think Ben Gibbard of Death Cab is an excellent writer. Such Great Heights (Postal Service) has some of the sweetest lyrics ever written in my opinion.

Now I know why everyone wants to win those CBC sweaters (besides how totally cool they are). I just looked up how much they cost!

When we first visited Ireland I bought a fisherman sweater that was basically my winter coat until January. I loved that thing and wore it out (it lasted almost 15 years). Good replacements are similar in cost to the Granted sweaters, which are nothing short of gorgeous and I'm sure similarly warm.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Trivia Tuesday... and Favourite Lyrics!

Like most other posters here, I like to listen to lyrics.  But usually after I fall in love with the song itself.  I like to learn the lyrics so that I can sing along at the top of my lungs without feeling the embarrassment of using the wrong words. I would have to say some of my favourite Canadian lyrics come from Leonard Cohen, like from his song

"Take this Longing"- "Just take this longing from my tongue, all the lonely things these hands have done, let me see your beauty broken down, like you would do for one  you love." Non-Canadian wise, i LOVE LOVE LOVE Joanna Newsom Y's-Monkey and Bear and Emily.

Monkey and Bear- "So, with the courage of a clown or cur or a kite jerking tight at it's tether. With her dun-brown gown of fur and her jerkin of swans down and leather, Bear would sway on her hind legs the organ would grind dregs of song, for the pleasure of the children who'd shriek, throwing coins at her feet, then recoil in terror."

From Emily "The meteorite is the source of the light, and the meteor is just what we see, and the meteoroid is the stone thats devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee." <--- I sing that to myself to remember the difference between meteorites, meteors and meteoroids.

In Dan Mangan's "Above The Headlights", he sings:

But I thought that Dan was singing:

    Lyrics are important to me!

The other day I was listening to Tiga's song "Shoes" and thought the lyrics were ridiculous, however the beat was so superb that they didn't matter in that instance.

it is certainly a nice treat when songs have carefully crafted lyrics, the type that send chills.

    that sarah harmer lyric:

And if I am a sailorYou are the warm gulf wind And you've blow into this little port And roused my dreams again.gets me .every. time

lyrics are definitely important, except when they aren't. music, and tastes for music are based on many more details than just lyrics. the connection is what matters, often that is lyrical, but can be rhythm, melody, instrumentation, or the even little doo-op at the end.

Yes, I enjoy listening to the lyrics, especially in indie songs. Sometimes the lyrics just hit you all of a sudden, like the lyrics in the song "Sweet Things" by Danny Michel did for me one day. There's so much going on in this song.

Hands down for me Arcade Fire is the Best Canadian band at writing lyrics!

Lyrics for the most part are very important to me as I find more insight into the band. In turn feeling closer to them as a fan. The only time lyrics are not an issue is if they are in another language. (I love Coeur de Pirate's sound & voice but when I translated her songs they were way too girly - I would probably not listen to her if she sang in English)

Lyric deal breakers: if you repeat your lyric line over & over again - that’s a fail in my book. It gets boring to listen to and annoying to sing. If your lyrics are too generic - that’s a fail in my book too. If I wanted to listen to fluff & pointless music I would switch to a top 40 radio station. If your lyrics are too lovey dovey - fail. I don't mind love songs, mushy love songs are another thing.

Do other people that enjoy Lyrics have song deal breakers too?

When I was in my teen years lyrics were very important. I was drawn to dark angry lyrics that articulated my feelings. Now that I'm a fairly well adjusted adult lyrics don't have the same impact, but I am still drawn to songwriters that have something meaningful to say. My fave lyrics from the Bucky longlist is Dan Mangan's Sold (which was also my pick for song of the year). My all time favorite lyric is from Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" (which also took on new meaning to me as an adult when Johnny Cash reinterpreted it)

    "I hurt myself today

To see if I still feel

    I focus on the pain

    The only thing that's real"

Also to score some points for CanCon I'm really into Leonard Cohen's lyrics.

Also I have a question about the Bucky's Award. We were asked to send in nominations for the lifetime achievement awards, but there appears to be no longlist for them. I was wondering why?
