Coming up today on Grant Lawrence Live, 2PM ET / 11AM PT on CBC Radio 3's web radio/Sirius 86:

Our Friday show is always all about the live music experience, so today we'll take a close examination of our Bucky Awards Short List for the Best Live Artist in Canada. Great word-of-mouth is huge for a touring band, and so that brings us to our...

Poll Question of the Day:

WHAT IS THE BEST LIVE BAND OR ARTIST YOU'VE SEEN IN THE PAST SIX MONTHS?

Is that band/artist on our Short List? Who truly blew you away with their live show? Which artist has been a recent live surprise? Who is overrated live? Let us know your thoughts by posting your comments to our blog, emailing feedback@cbcradio3.com.

TOP 5 MUST SEE LIVE GIGS THIS WEEKEND:

Fri, Sat Nov 20,21 - M is for Montreal, Montreal QC. – This is an industry festival open to public that features DD/MM/YYYY, La Patiere Rose, Malajube, Champion and Fucked Up. We hear the place on Saturday is Metropolis.

Best band I have seen in the last six months would have to be Said the Whale at the Capital here in Fredericton. If I am correct it was their first show in the Maritimes ever and it did not disappoint!

Plan to see Brian Borcherdt and Julie Fader this Sunday here in Freddy Beach.

Best band I've seen in the past 6 months has to be Bon Iver. I saw them at Sasquatch and they absolutely blew me away. They also go in the "surprise" category because I actually almost didn't even go to their set as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were playing and I figured that their set would be more exciting. Boy was I wrong. I was almost moved to tears (and it takes a lot to make me cry) and my friend was actually crying. It was just so beautiful! I'm pretty upset that they're taking a hiatus as this means I won't be able to see them again for quite some time. As I said afterwards, if they were the only band I had seen that weekend the trip to Washington would have been well worth it.

Elliott Brood with The Wooden Sky in Lethbridge. It was at a place called Henotic. The place was packed, which doesn't happen often there. The Wooden sky was surprisingly high energy, and were the perfect complimet to Elliott Brood's "death country" ways. The whole crowd was into it which added so much to the atmosphere. I judge how good a show is by how hard it is to get to sleep after, I had a tough time after that one, which means it ranks very high. Easily in my top 5 of all time.

Best Live show in the last 6 months:

Mark Berube and the Patriotic Few at the Reginal Folkfest in August.  This band puts on an amazing show.  From their Friday night gig to their shows and workshops the next two days, they attracted many new fans.  If I could recommend one show to anybody, I would say go to a Mark Berube show.  Powerful vocals, complex percussion and a rocking cello will blow you away.  Who knew a cello could rock it?

On October 25th they presented a stripped-down trio to Prince George audience members at Art Space.  They "wowed!" the place.  Drop everything, go see the Patriotic Few tonight!

A completely off-topic story for AlexOfAnders and tb3

So yesterday, I made my way up to a part of Edmonton I don't usually see to acquire a new belt for my turntable.  Since there was also a record store I was unfamiliar with in the area, I stopped to check it out.

Sadly, they had nothing I wanted to buy.  But they did have one copy of a particular lengthy limited edition 12" single from Destroyer (hint: it's Bay of Pigs).  So I picked it up for (one of) you.

Which of you should I send it to?  Are both of you still looking for it?  If so, have you planned a fight to the death or something in this situation?  I can ask random.org to decide, if need be.

    Tough Choice

I guess it would have to be Elliott Brood because the concert a few weeks back was crazy and rowdy. Finally got to use a pan and wooden spoon. :) Friends and even Putzy have told me they liked the Elliott Brood interview that I aired on CKCU. Library Voices were great live when they stopped in O-town. I did not see Mother Mother at all this year.

I am going to see the Lions, Novaks, and Arkells in Calgary this weekend, should be a great show.

For those in Toronto,  you should REALLY go see Christina Martin tonight. Cuff the Duke is backing her and shes playing with Matt Mays but she is amazing live all on her own. CHECK IT OUT! :)

I'm going with 2 most over rated in the last 6 months.

As my favourites would just be repeating myself.

One disappointment was Jenn Grant.  I especially felt she was poorly matched touring with Dan Mangan.  Reminded me of one rule Grant said an opening act should never do, and that is show up the main act.  Jenn Grant had such a quiet low key show, and Dan Mangan has a powerful voice, and presence.  It became especially apparent when she asked him to come up and sing with her, a huge mistake in my, and my blog friend  who was with me, opinion.  Really made clear the differences in stage presence, and style.

Another disappointment was Zeus.  They have been a good back up band, but need a few more laps around the block to develop more fully.  Again, I was with another blog mate, and she felt the same way.

I have to reiterate what so many people have said about Arkells. Saw them Tuesday at the Habitat with The Novaks and wow. Talk about stage presence! They sold out on a Tuesday (impressive for this town).

As for best live acts I've seen lately. Dan Mangan was incredible, Spiral Beach throws a good dance party and Joel Plaskett is just a great showman. Off to see Ohbijou tonight with Painted Birds. Should be a gooder!

    Tough Call

Wow there've been a ton of great shows in the past 6 months.  I've seen Land of Talk, Hawksley, Bison B.C., and Royal Wood lately and any of those shows could've qualified for best.  But as is frequently the case the most recent seems like the best show so I gotta go with Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans who I saw play last night at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood.  You see so many singer songwriters in LA who can barely strum the acoustic guitar right, it is so refreshing to hear a band that can really play.  And they were on fire!  And they had a big crowd that loved it.  Can't wait for them to come back!

    Last Weekend

I finally got to see Think About Life and YSP!WSD! LIVE last Saturday and they were amazing. The crowds were dancing and jumping like crazy. The only downer was the venue (Babylon) because the part I was standing at was sticky. Yuck. Overall, great atmosphere and it was like a party and the place was sweating hot. :)

    Billy Bragg OR Brian Borcherdt

Maybe i'm just stuck on names that have 2 Bs, I dunno...

Watching Billy Bragg from the side-stage in Halifax @ the Rebecca Cohn was amazing.  Even more amazing is how nice he was, to me and those in the audience, before and after the shows.  The man is a true showman!

Also right up there was Brian Borcherdt @ the Whipper Snapper Gallery during NXNE.  It was the first time I had seen him (ever) and I was floored.  Plus i'm a sucker for Jazzmaster guitars.

Elliot Brood is amazing live too, always.  I had to miss the last show here, but the one before was amazing.

I just wish more bands would travel to Newfoundland.  We miss so many "cross-Canada" tours and I'd like to let bands know, not only will we enjoy your live show, but you'll enjoy our audience!

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Top 5 Must-See Live Gigs of the Weekend!

Overrated for me was Metric. I think it had a lot to do with the crowd and the venue and the entire show just being a bad experience all around, but I was really looking forward to the show and ended up not enjoying it at all. They barely interacted with the audience and I was just unimpressed overall. Perhaps if I wasn't being pushed and crushed by the crowd I would have liked them more.

    such a tough question!

I've seen so many good bands over the last 6 months that it's crazy hard to choose.  Just to be different I'm going to go with Sunparlour Players here in Charlottetown, on a Tuesday, a few weeks back.  They had a crazy high energy show, and I loved it!

I concur that the Elliott Brood/Wooden Sky show was great. Saw the Calgary version. However, the best show I've see recently would be Dave McCann and the Firehearts (formely Dave McCann and the Ten Toed Frogs) at the rustic Auditorium Hotel in Nanton Ab. A great country-rock performance that ended with a jam session encore in Dave's hotel room. Would love to hear some of his stuff on the air...

I think I've seen Metric too many times. Same setup, nothin fancy from them.

First, a show you missed! Tonight at the Searchlight short–listed The Aeolian Hall, (London, ON) Melissa McLelland, and Justin Rutledge are playing a show. Anyone in the area that isn't already going, should really consider going. Two incredible voices, in one of the best acoustic venues in Canada.

If anyone here goes, be sure to introduce yourself to me, I am volunteering, taking the tickets at the door. You'll know me by my sweet sweet Movember Stache!

Now, for best live act I have seen in the last six months… I am going to go much more recent and say the tandem of You Say Party! We Say Die! and Think About Life got even this middle aged white boy shaking his but. They were a collision of energy and great music. All in a tiny upstairs venue in the middle of a sleepy go nowhere week. What a pleasant surprise that was.

Best Live Performance - I'll throw out the Arkells as well. Just last night at Venue in Vancouver. This is the third time that I've seen them...each time I figure they won't be able to keep the pace they did at their previous show, and each time I have had nothing to worry about.  They leave it all out there...

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Top 5 Must-See Live Gigs of the Weekend!

Tegan and Sara's set at Rifflandia in Victoria this past September was far too overrated. It may have been because Tegan was stoned off of cold meds, probably fighting off Swine Flu, but their set was just lacking that spark.

Ironically, my favourite set of the past 6 months would have to be the opening act from that night! A certain boy by the name of Aidan Knight blew me away, especially with his one song called "Jasper". I had just come from a summer spent there, and this song caught me so off guard. He has a quirky stage presence which is reinforced by his awkward self, and jokes about cereal. Well worth a listen ;)

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Top 5 Must-See Live Gigs of the Weekend!

The last 6 months?  There have been so many shows in the last 6 months!  I think the best still has to be the Six Shooter showcase at NXNE, that night was just unbelievable.  And it included Elliott Brood, who always put on an amazing show.

I also saw Sunset Rubdown in Chicago a few weeks ago, and I was blown away!  I went with a couple of friends who are hugs fans, which helped I think.

Honourable mention to Joel Plaskett as well, saw him in a little theatre in Cobourg (small town outside Toronto), and it was just so special. I don't think anyone can charm a crowd like him.

Tonight I'm going to see Rural Alberta Advantage at Lee's Palace, who I haven't seen yet, so I'm looking forward to that.  Considering Two Hours Traffic tomorrow now too!

I'm going to say Hey Ocean! In Lethbridge at a little place called the slice. The Venue was small, I was right next to the stage, the band is even better live than on their album. It was high energy and the band asked for lots of crowd participation. Also saw THE DUDES who came in close second.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Top 5 Must-See Live Gigs of the Weekend!

One of the best shows I was a part of recently was when a band called Paper Lions (PEI) crept into town, for their first show in Windsor.

They were beyond polite, and extraordinarily friendly guys. The got to the building early, set up, and were not expecting much of a turnout, as they were playing in the middle of a week with Immaculate Machine, Wax Mannequin, Rae Spoon, Lindy, and more.

The local, Magic Hall of Mirrors, played a pared-down set that easily rivaled any of their full-band performances, and the crowd just magically appeared! Paper Lions absolutely throttled the crowd from beginning to end, reminding me of the killer performances that Young Rival displays when they're in town.

Their encore took place on the bar-top, unplugged, while the entire bar went silent. The guitar and vocal harmonies took over Phog Lounge. The crowd joined in for the refrain, and the show eventually ended, to the dismay of those new-uber-fans of this unknown PEI band.

Oh, and a couple of the guys actually stuck around late, and helped me unload a TON of wood from my van, which I had to do by the cover of night in the garbage bins next door. Talk about going above and beyond the call of rock!

Here's some video of the bar-top encore, and the interview I did with one of the band-members (David Cyrus Ronald McDonald - for real) of Paper Lions.

I beleive Hey Ocean! was October 21st. Both Venues are nice. Hetnotic is really cool in the way it's set up and I also like the fact it has a balcony (i'm short so I can't always see a band through the crowd if i'm not right up front) but the slice is still really good if you  like smaller venues.

    Junior Boys!

I saw the Junior Boys at Lee's in Toronto a couple weeks ago with Woodhands- they put on a GREAT live show! The night itself was slighty ruined by a group I had stood next too, who was clearly not there to see the band (which is odd, at a $25 cover), spent most of the time mock dancing into (owch, you elbowed my brain!) and in front of us (they were an incredibly tall group, too) and were on some kind of 'I want to feel up everyone around me substance.' It sorta ruined the experince, but the show, for what i saw and danced to it, was pretty awesome. I can't wait to see them again, around different people.

Right now I'm into Henotic. I like the bands they are getting there, and yeah, the setup. I played a show there in August, and one downfall was the sound. The guy blamed my guitar pickup, but it's never caused that problem anywhere else.

    @tb3

I was going to wait and see if Alex showed up before I asked the internet to choose one of you, in case he'd found a copy or something.  But then I got bored of waiting.  It's probably for the best, because random.org says you get it, so this way he didn't get his hopes up.

Email me at jen - at - jenpollock.ca and we'll sort out the details.

Does anyone have any tips for shipping a record?

Bubble wrap and two pieces of Cardboard taped together. At least when I order one that is usually how they show up.

And I have been keeping my eye open for that record as well as I remember Alex saying he really wants it.

do so! Rose is just as funny on stage as she was in that dictionary spot that was just on. Talk about stage presence.

One of my families cherished possessions is a vinyl recording of Harry Belafonte live at Carnegie Hall. An amazing concert. Something we all really enjoy of it is his back and forth with the audience. Masterful the way he handles them...Rose reminded me of that.

Think About Life's live show is a total and undeniable force. Last week at London's Black Shire Pub they blew headliners You Say Party! We Say Die! out of the water.

Jen, that was a really sweet thing you did for John.  (And Alex, if he'd have been awake today.)  However, you really should have worked out a trade for both of them: whoever got you a radio3 scarf first got the LP.

Regardless, another reason why I love this site and our group.

Keydive: Thanks for the advice; now I just need to find bubble wrap.  If I find another copy, it'll definitely go to Alex, but that's not likely because I already checked the two record stores that aren't in the middle of nowhere.

Lee: I've pinned my scarf hopes on the Bandwidth contest.  If that doesn't work out, I think I really will order the Cat and Girl scarf.

Best show for me would have to be either Elliot Brood or Library Voices.  The Library Voices played such an awesome show at Rifflandia this year, so much energy and enthusiasm, it was hard to beat.

I'm sooooo disappointed the Victoria Arkells show got cancelled, stupid BC Ferries and stupid wind, I'm starting to get a bad case of SAD.  Fortunately I'm going to Thunderheist this weekend, hopefully will kinda make up for it.

As for Alex's state of conciousness, I was pretty sure I saw him comment on this morning's R3-30 post (and John on Vish's post; I was hoping they would both be around, so I checked).  So he was definitely awake at some point today.

So many great live acts, it is hard to pick:

Mark Berube & the Patriotic Few might have to take the nod for his show at the communitea cafe in Canmore in July. AMAZING, the passion that he has on stage!

Library Voices & In Flight Safety were great too... LV crazy/ amazing/ fun energy.. they left an impression in Canmore (and maybe on the tops of our tables during the gig) in September.

Bahamas opening for Amy Millan is still talked about a month after the gig.  Understated and funny.

Looking forward to OHBIJOU on Monday, Nov 23rd for the last show of their tour... think it might give Mark a run for his money.

We might have to agree to disagree on this one. Half way through YSP! WSD! set I noted two things - one, that half of the crowd had left and two, that the only people really enjoying themselves were 20 something males and a handful of drunk girls. It was odd to say the least. Compared to Think About Life the energy really wasn't there for me. I was near the front for both sets.

In any event, you're correct. It was an excellent bill. On paper.. ha!

Best live show from the past six months

Difficult.  Spiral Beach is very close to the top; they had tons of energy, and seemed to pour iall of it into the audience.  And Jezibelle was fantastic, at their CD release the weekend before last.  But I think I'll need to go with The Get Down, who were one of the guests at The Secretaries' CD release.  No, wait, Spiral Beach.  No, Jezibelle.

    Can I have a three-way tie?

  92. tb3
    92

    @takethat

Agree to disagree then, because I have a photo I took of the crowd, halfway through YSP! WSD! that shows how jammed up near the front I was. I was about 2 people back from Krista (the keyboardist) on the right side by the wall. In the middle of the drunk girls.

But let's be honest that place had to of only had 80 people to make it full. If half left, I was certainly shoulder to shoulder with the remaining 40.

    93

    @Absotively

    You have mail btw.

Ooooh! I forgot about Spiral Beach! They were sandwiched between The Danks and Two Hours Traffic and were easily more energy and stage presence than the other two combined. And that's not to say I didn't like the opener or headliner… It was just great energy Spiral Beach brought. Love their show.

How could I have forgotten Torngat!!!

We discovered that night that the secret to Torngat's sound was every one of the 3 musicians played minimally 2, often three instruments at one time.

Pietro Amatto on french horn, he also plays with Belle Orcheste, and Loweda tells me she has seen him with Arcade Fire.

It was an amazing show, because it rocked really, really hard, with no rock instruments.

Alright, sooo let's state the obvious here. I may have a small crush on dan mangan (understatement). I missed him play so many sets, and finally had the chance to see him in Victoria at Rifflandia (so many shows!)

(apologies if it's already been mentioned)

this is a must-see gig in Ottawa this weekend: country hunksters Fiftymen performing with Withering Pines at The Mayfair Theatre (which ususally shows movies), as a 10 yr anniversary show.  this will be my first time seeing music at the Mayfair and am looking forward to it like crazy.

    Three words: Volcanoless in Canada.

I saw them at the Brandon Folk Festival, and while I was having a horrible time, that was the one thing to make me happy. They rock the acoustic guitar as if it was electric.

Also, the Western Canadian Music Awards were very very underrated this year, it was one of the most enjoyable weekends in my life, for shame none of you came to the event! (minus 3 of you and I know atleast one of you are reading this)

can't really decide between woodhands at hillside this summer or rural alberta advantage at broken city at sled island.  both sets were amazing compelling for completely different reasons.  i guess i just have a boner for paul the drummer.

also, zeus at rifflandia was amazing.  i've heard people say how they felt they were overrated live, but they totally blew me away.

'a few more laps around the block to develop more fully?'

i feel the opposite.  i think with 10 years most bands wouldn't have the live chops these guys have.  it's really strange to me how a band i think is so undeniable can be so polarizing.

    thoughts?

I checked back.  You disagree about Zeus?

They came out of left field for me, I knew nothing about them until all the promotion here.  I suppose I probably have seen them before when they backed up Jason Collett.

I don't know how much song writing opportunities they got with their past gigs, but I found their songs lack luster.  They had 2 or 3 that I thought were creative, and I did think they had skill and potential.  But not fully cooked yet.

BTW, we have a mutual friend in Roslyn.
