Interview with Amelia Curran: play

First impressions are sometimes the most accurate ones.  You react from the gut, you don’t over think - you decide from the heart. First impressions can also be completely off the mark.  Ever met someone and thought they were odd only to find you’re the best of friends six months down the road?

I guess the same thing goes for music too.  Sometimes you hear a song for the first time and you think:  I'll never get into this band! Then, a week later, you’re following their tour bus.  Or maybe it goes the other way.  You love an artist’s music for a while and then suddenly you realize you just can’t stand it anymore and their CD’s go into “that pile”. With this in mind, why not weigh in on our...

POLL QUESTION:

WHAT ARTIST AND/ OR SONG HAVE YOU HAD A CHANGE OF HEART OVER?

Why did your hate turn to love or vice-versa?  Couldn’t stand Hip Hop before and now you love it – what swayed you?  Ever outgrown a song?

Here's how to get in touch:  On the BLOG here or Twitter us at CBC Radio 3, OR send us an email:  feedback@cbcradio3.com

And it’s All Request Tuesday, so let us know what you want to hear!

    King Khan & BBQ Show

Ironically, the first time I saw them was @ NXNE - I had no idea who they were and suddenly this guy starts wailing on his guitar and making "magic hands" motions at the crowd while another is chugging away and drumming with his feet.

Maybe it was the fact that it was so loud, I couldn't breathe, or so crowded, I couldn't hear, but in any case, I left part-way through the set.

After being home a few weeks after that, I realized I couldn't get those 15 mins out of my head.  I went on youtube and watched a ton of videos and then dl'd the CD from iTunes.  I really liked it!

So, rest assured, King Khan & BBQ have a new fan and I've had a musical change of heart.

    Weakerthans

Weakerthans took a while for me to like. At first listen, I just couldn't get into it. Didn't like it no matter how much it seemed like it was everyone's favourite band. Maybe it was part that as a guy into Canadian music who seems to like rock, folk & pop it's just expected that I LOVE the weakerthans.

After I started hanging out with fellow blogger kn0ttyn3rb she had an extra ticket to the Constantines / Weakerthan Rolling Tundra Revue and talked me into it. Maybe I'm just a live show person or it took seeing it performed and forcing me to really listen to it instead of shrugging it off but I started to like it.

It's not like they're my favourite band or anything but I appreciate them now, like there music and even own a couple albums.

It's Jane Siberry week for me!

but it's on topic...when I first heard Mimi on the Beach back in -oh, about 1982(?) - I thought "yech!" Then my older brother came home with The Speckless Sky (her next album after No Borders Here, which had Mimi on the Beach on it).

I heard One More Colour and listened to the rest of the album and was hooked. Now I have most everything she's done, including her new stuff recorded under the name of Issa (and a new one coming out Nov 16).

    Mother Mother

About five years ago, all of my friends were obsessed with Mother Mother. I seriously did not get the music. Maybe it was my friends drilling it into my brain like French class in elementary school. After being able to step away from it and re-evaluate it for myself a few years later, I absolutely love the band.  It would be awesome to hear Hayloft, Tariq!

Japandroids had to throw a few vowels into their name for me to get on the bandwagon. Dumbest reason to be aprehensive about them.

    Buck 65

I really really really hate rap music but I don't mind Buck - but I think its because I had a wonderful experience with him.

He did a private interactive show for vice in Toronto and I was lucky enough to be invited. He wandered around the place & would sing his song to clusters of people enjoying the party. After the song he would tell you a bit about why he wrote that song and answer any questions. It was amazing and now he has a special spot in my heart.

I also do not get why everyone likes Said the Whale - but I'm trying to see why everyone hearts them.

Weakerthans..... after seeing them live I just have a hard time getting into them now. I own all the cd's, but I've been bored to death TWICE now and I've found their plays on itunes dwindling compared to other bands that keep skyrocketing.

also, I can't stand anything F'd Up have done prior to the newest release.  So maybe it just takes a good record

    believe it or not...Hawksley

I was searching my brain and iTunes for my change of heart, and when I hit the section of 93 songs by Hawksley Workman, I found it.... it was a case of overexposure...much music playing Anger As Beauty probably 10 times a day, i couldn't stand it...hated it.    then in my first year of university my boyfriend played me 'Maniacs' and I fell in love. Hawksley is amazing, in my top 3 favourite artists...and i even like Anger As Beauty now too haha. Its pretty crazy how overexposure can kill a song/artist.  ((can you play me Maniacs tariq? it's kinda obscure compaired to the rest of his stuff, if not Your Beauty Must Be Rubbing Off).  (ps. good morning)

I hate that Woodhands song Dancer slightly less than I used to. Change of heart or beaten into submission by huge amount of playing on R3?

  12. krib
    12

    tegan and sara

when I first heard them, I was kinda "meh" but the more I've listened to them the more  I've warmed to them. I think some of what helped was seeing them in interviews on youtube.

They're really interesting and quite humourous when interviewed.

  13. tb3
    13

    Crystal Castles

There was so much hype about this band before the seemingly had even done anything I just couldn't bring myself to a thought aside from I want to hate them preemptively.

But now that they've been around a while and gotten airplay, here I am thinking Yup. I was right. I really don't like them.

Doesn't really prove your query though…

    That said. For realsies.

The Constantines. It wasn't that I never liked them, it was just that I really didn't get into them, and nothing was compelling me to. But then a fellow Radio3 listener had a spare ticket to the Weakerthans/Constantines Rolling Tundra Review that he was giving away for free cause their friend backed out.

I went, excitedly to see The Weakerthans. But, after seeing their live show, I was instantly and completely converted and speaking the gospel Constantines fan.

I suspect many people have fallen in like with The Cons at their live show too.

Katy Perry. I could NOT stand her when she first came out but after hearing a few interviews on a BBC Radio One show she started to grow on me, and now I will gladly singalong to her songs on the rare occasions I listen to commercial radio.

I'm trying to think of there's any indie artists that I've felt that way about if there is, it hasn't been to the same extent.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3: The Musical Change of Heart w/ Amelia Curran

speaking of Japandroids.... I really didn't dig them until I bought their vinyl on a whim. I can safely say they're one of my most listened to bands now, and probably a safe bet to end up on the critic's Best of The Year Lists. I still don't like Rockers East Vancouver all that much, even though CBC seems to play that one the most. If at all possible, please please please play Wet Hair. It's the catchiest tune this year. Trust me (or don't). Sovereignty is such a kick ass song too! . And I guess, if you have to, maybe play Young Hearts Spark Fire. It is nominated for best lyrics so that has to mean something.

    Weakerthans too

I have to agree with mattyjames2001.

I was a huge fan of The Weakerthans but I just.. don't care.. anymore.

And I feel soo guilty about it. Because I still think they are good songwriters and people and that. I mean I won't tune out if a song comes on. But I never want to listen to an album anymore. Or see a show. I've just have had enough I think. I overdosed. Ha.

Haha, Rolling Tundra Revue changing hearts across the nation? Constantines were great though, I wasn't a huge fan of theirs either going in but I didn't avoid them like the Weakerthans so change of heart on the Weakerthans is more notable.

  22. brainwash
    22

    @Duncan Woof

You ever listen to any underground / indie hip-hop? Granted, Buck 65 stands apart as one who thought way outside the box, but as a genre there is some gold offered there especially from this nation, but obviously the States as well.

For the other side of the coin, I watched Swollen Members' latest video (a trio I used to really dig 10 years ago and went to so many shows), and I can easily say they represent everything I hate about hip hop. Granted, I hated them since 2002, but it's good to see they've only gotten worse.

    23

    @mattyjames2001

You have to give The Weakerthans the credit they deserve for being out there years ago and paving some way - particularly in my future tastes in music (not settling for what commercial radio has to offer me). But then you can put the CD back on the shelf and nod and smile at the memories you had of loving them and pick up another CD. Ha.

I just haven't looked too much into finding more rap I enjoy. I like the storey telling behind Buck 65 and I really don't have time to dig through the rap/hip hop genre to find another storey teller like him. That's why I leave it to word of mouth for similar sounds.

I used to be the type of person when asked what kind of music do I like my response would be "Pretty much everything except country."

I liked Wolfmother a lot when I picked up their self-titled album. But every song I've heard from them since sunds exactly the same. Kinda lost my enthusiasm

@Pawistik - I also hate the Woodhands song, but it was played so much on here I was tricked into thinkng I liked it. I even added it to my personal playlist - big mistake as I cringe everytme it pops up

Coldplay was also my favourite band for quite sme time...until they released X&Y. It was all downhill from there

  36. TeamQuiggan
    36

    Crystal Castles & Alexisonfire

When I first heard Crystal Castles, it kicked my ass! It was awesome noisy 8-bit rockin'. Then I caught some interviews and found out that they are pretty rude, and I lost all interest in their work.

I used to love Alexisonfire 6 years ago, I went to their first CD release party. Recently I bought their new album Old Crows Young Cardinals. I popped it in and well, it seems like I don't really enjoy this type of music anymore.

The other way, I hated Radiohead Kid-A, but the more listened to it the more I enjoyed it. It became the music I would fall asleep to.

  37. mattyjames2001
    37

    Woodhands

I totally can relate to the Dancer syndrome.  however, after the sweaty ass dance party that was their live show opening up for Cadence Weapon, I converted.  That and the vinyl sounds FANTASTIC compared to the digital versions.  I can't usually tell the difference between analog and digital (honestly....), but I can on that one.  Plus, the best song they've ever done, Be Back Soon, pops up on side B.  I'm probably wearing out the groove I've rocked it so much.

One more for the Rolling Tundra Revue 2005

I see I'm by no means the only one!

I was a Weakerthans fan so excited to see my favourite band for the first time that I didn't even care who the other band was. I actually even owned a Cons CD, but never got into it. What can I say, the Constantines live show won me over and I'm now one of their converted fans. You can imagine that I was way more excited about the Rolling Tundra 2009 bill!

    Woodhands

Excuse me while I go step out for a cup of tea....

  40. AlexOfAnders
    40

    Woodhands!

Is a band you must MUST see live. The recording is good to, but these guys are a dance party waiting to explode.

Speaking of Woodhands though, my brother always laments that Dancer would be a great song if it wasn't for Dan Werb cutting in with "You're a very good DANCER! What is your name? What is your name?"

I can't tell if it feels right anymore because it just makes the song for me now, especially with the memories of the sweaty dance parties of yore.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3: The Musical Change of Heart w/ Amelia Curran

speaking of non Canadians: I wasn't that big of a Lily Allen fan until I saw her on SNL one night. She's actually flippin great! You can make fun of me all you want, I can take it.

and the first time I heard "A Milli" by Lil Wayne I was soooooooo turned off that I even remember calling it GARBAGE. But, months go by and I get over the annoying-ness of the sample [a milli, a milli, a milli, a milli (x234890238902348904)] and really focus on the lyrics, and now I'm fairly certain that he's a genius. It's honestly one of my favorite songs EVER now. I doubt anybody can write a 4 minute free style full of witty analogies and send it straight up the charts the way he can. He's definitely the best rapper alive.... the Carter III stands way above Jay Z's the Blueprint III. That being said, everyone else I know can't stand the song. I don't care.

    DFA 1979

It took Death From Above 1979 to split up to get me into them.  Maybe it was because I never took the time to listen but once the news got out I was hearing their songs everywhere.

So radiohead just texted me to tell me my post was read on air, thanks Tariq! I can't listen at work, but nice to know I can submit to the show.It also cheered me up since I just had to give up my elastic collection. Just when you find something that breaks up the monotony that is office life, they find a way to break it. :) (FYI it wasn't just an elastic collection, it was an artistic display I was working on.)

does changing someone else's mind count?

i've loved Luke Doucet since my very first hearing (at the CBC Glenn Gould theatre, covering "Ophelia" for  the We SHall Be Released Show.  would your release that already???)

and promptly ordered 'aloha, manitoba' & played it for days on end, followed by everything else.  gave it to a friend, who hated it.  said friend, however, is a huge Blue Rodeo fan so sure enough eventually they came to town with friends, including.  he got about 3 bars into "Broken One" & my pal, who NEVER admits he's wrong, looked at me & said "ummm....I'm going to need to have a look at some of your other Luke stuff)

    a triumph of conversion!!

  48. ikilledtheradio

    Dan Managan

I never really thought too much of him except that the robots song would get stuck in my head last winter, but then that song kept getting played over and OVER again and I just couldn't take it!  I would turn off the radio whenever it played.

Then i noticed my friends dropping his name, the front cover of some local magazine and friends trying to drag me to his show.  (which I should have gone to)

Well, I finally got his album and it's awesome.  I just need to keep hitting skip on 'robots.'

  49. ikilledtheradio

    @flagpole

I was converted to Luke at a Blue Rodeo concert as well!

I had heard of him a little bit on R3, but his opening set was so effing good that literally half the crowd went to get merch before Blue Rodeo hit the stage. I've never seen so much stuff sold for an opening act, it was great! I saw a lady buy 5 cd's!

That's probably what I remember most about the whole night, just the sheer amount of new fans Luke made. He's awesome.

@Alex You're welcome ;) and @tb3, I fell in love with the Cons that tour after picking up their album/EP!

My "conversion" would definitely have to be Arcade Fire. Once again, like Alex said, hard to feel like a Canadian indie fan while secretly not liking one of its visionaries. In fact right now I'm listening to the pop channel to hear their song. I used to think they were super weird based on only the singles, but after giving the albums a chance all the way through, fell in love with their sounds. This was not long ago either...

  52. keydive

I used to avoid folk/country like the plague, but with my personal "discovery" of various folk bands ( which btw Canada has them by the truckload), I've opened my ears to atleast some forms of the stuff.  That being said I still can't watch more than 30s of the "pop country" you see on CMT...

    Mother Mother, fr rlz.

I have to agree with Jennifer Strong.  I couldn't tolerate Mother Mother for the first few months I started hearing them.  I thought they had silly lyrics and sillier vocals.  Then I heard an interview with Ryan discussing how complex their music is...  Several listens later, I had an "I get it!" moment.  Now I love them.

The Bicycles, on the other hand...  Meh.  There's absolutely no pending change of heart there.

    @MackenzieC

I spent years hearing Katy around LA as a singer songwriter and loved it.  Her voice is one of the most incredible I've heard in my life.  Her pop thing has grown on me since the album came out but I still don't think it's as good as just Katy and a guitar.... which I probably shouldn't say 'cause I'm pals with a member of her band.  But I feel the pop production thing only covers up her voice.  And her best song, "Wish You the Worst", wasn't on the album for some reason.  But it is on Youtube  :)

And she has a great sense of humor!

  59. hgummo
    59

    There are many...

I've had a few pretty dramatic changes of heart. A couple recent ones have been Patrick Watson's Wooden Arms and Kathleen Edwards' Asking For Flowers. When I first heard Wooden Arms I just couldn't get into it and it stayed in the do not play pile for quite some time until one day I gave it another chance and it suddenly became one of my favorite albums. Ever. With Kathleen Edwards, I really thought I hated her voice until listening to the album again the other day and loving it.

Also, I've mentioned this before, but I originally was not a fan of the song Shoes by Tiga. After listening to it a few times I've actually grown to love it. Amazing how that happens.

Don't ask me how or why these things happen, but for me they do. I think it's always worth giving things another chance (or two) before completely writing them off. Some things get my attention and keep it from the start, but many of my favorites have taken more than a few listens to achieve that status.

  60. MusicSoop
    60

    @Crozon Ottawa/Country

I felt exactly the same way.  But I think growing older makes country music make a lot more sense, like life needs to kick you around a little first.

Plus I love the alt-country stuff and Canadians like Corb because they dispense with the fake twang.  I really don't like twang voices for the most part.

Luke live is definetly a thing to behold & i've seen him convert many a folk as an opener.

he played here in Chicago opening for Erin McKeown, who had a pretty predominantly lesbian following out that evening.(exception the 6 guys there to ogle)

they weren't real sure what to make of Luke at first.  but it was the "Broken" tour & after a couple stories about his ex-gal, they realized they lyrics applied appropriately to their heartache also & LOVED him.  very cool to see.

hoping if he opens for enough great people here(that being Chicago), he'll eventually have a whole headliner gig!!

recently at a party, I told an FM country emcee that "pop country is the lowest common denominator of music".

Yeah he didn't take it lightly. In fact, he was straight up pissed off and flabbergasted.  In my defence, he was ripping apart every other genre of music and I just had to take him down a few pegs.

sidenote: country music fans are probably the most close minded people of all time, musically and in life in general. Lucky for me, this is 98% of the population of Saskatchewan.

Maybe it was an off night? I've seen the Cons a couple of times now and they were 100% great.

You should listen to the Canada Day live recording that Radio 3 did with them this year. (Hopefully it's available on the site somewhere!) I'd say that's a pretty good representation of their live performances. Although you probably won't have any video to go with it and that can sometimes be a big factor in any live show.

Go Mattyjames Go! Let them pop country djs have it!

Now, however, I think you overstate the close mindedness a bit. There's more than 2% of us that are not into pop country. Must be at least 3 or 4% that like indie rock, and if you add the classic rock crowd, well, there goes your theory. ;)

I was never a fan of hip-hop until hearing K'naan at the Mod Club earlier this year.  I guess you're never too old  to have your eyes opened by music.

I don't know... depends on what country fans you're talking about. I know a lot of people who spend most of their life listening only to country (myself included) and have increasingly expanded their tastes. Similarly, I was picked on for most of my elementary school days (by kids and adults alike) for listening to the very country music that they now find "cool" - and some of them must have had different tastes at some point, right?Although you may have something with pop country being the lowest common denominator - There's maybe only one or two songs since the '90s that are on country mainstream that I like.

I'm not so sure I overstated it.  People that are into crap rock like Nickleback will at least say they like the rock legends like Led Zep/Beatles/Hendrix etc etc etc.

Pop country fans, however, you'd be hard pressed to find them to like the country legends the same way.  It's literally Toby Keith or nothing.  When I think of country, I'd like to go back to the glory days of Merle and Kris and Johnny and Townes and the good ol boys.  And those stations refuse to even recognize the fact theres other genres.  Very close minded.

haha I know I'm very over generalizing it, I'm mostly just drawing from everyone on my floor that I work with as an informal poll.

but to quote Fred Eaglesmith at a recent concert "I love country.  It just doesn't have to be so damn stupid nowadays"

I work at a university campus so am not imersed in too many hard-core pop country folks, and it sounds like I should be glad for that. It seems my perspective may be skewed.

We should all get together for a beer sometime. I think we'd get along just fine!

The whole alt country genre. For a good part of my musical life I avoided this stuff like the plague.

Cue Johnny Cash and his 2 live albums (Folsom Prison, San Quentin), followed by Ryan Adams (Jacksonville City Nights, etc..) and a healthy does of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, and the floodgates were opened.

Ryan Adams, now there's someone I seem to have grown tired of that I used to like very much (have the albums to prove it)

Agreed! mmm beer.  You're at the U of S I take it.  I live in Regina but you can usually find me at Amigos at least one Saturday a month.  I probably won't remember this, but I'll drop you a line sometime somehow (assuming your email is on your profile)

I absolutely LOVE Blackie & the Rodeo Kings! Oh man I could go for some "Stoned" right now.

I recently saw Tom Wilson's Lee Harvey Osmond (at amigos), playing to a crowd of old people sitting down.  I'd love to see him play in front of a rock and roll crowd, and not be the youngest one there by 30 years.

Count me as another late convert to alt-country.  And hip-hop.  In my defence, I was born in 1983, so I was exposed to Ice, Ice Baby and Achy-Breaky Heart at impressionable ages.

I seem to flip-flop on artists pretty often, so I'm not even going to try to put together a list.

This happens a lot, your feelings towards something just change. I used to dislike Kelly Hrudey's HNIC commentary, now I think the guy's pretty damn on the mark most the time.

The biggest musical change of heart for me was Shad. I used to absolutely hate hip-hip and rap. Hated. But then I bought Shad's "The Old Prince" just because I thought "The Old Prince Still Lives at Home" was absolutely hilarious. Turned out hip hop could be intelligent and awesome. Shad single-handeldly changed my opinions on an entire genre.

    speaking of country...

Well, I'm not a big fan but and I've always laughed at thoes funny country hillbillies (no offence to anybody) anyways, my bro is a huge red neck and got me into Corb Lund Band, I resisted for a while but eventually thoes catchy tunes about trucks getting stuck just stuck.

We just can't go see any pop country shows together. :P Next time I'm out in SK we'll have to catch up. Or it'll just give me an excuse for a roadtrip outta Winnipeg.

I just thought you were being funny till I scrolled up to see it as a correction, still looks funny to me though but speaking of country, I never thought I'd like anything remotely country but Old Man Luedecke really opened my eyes that I shouldn't disgard things sololy based on genre. I love both of Old Man Luedecke's albums and although there aren't tons of country bands I like, I like some country inflected things now like Corb Lund and Rock Plaza Central (who is only very very slightly country).

I'm surprised not to see F*cked Up in here anywhere. I admit, I'm a convert.

Bay of Pigs (Destroyer) also seems to have changed minds. Still a little too self-indulgent for me.

The Weakerthans very much remind me of the Decemberists.

Agreed on the Fucked Up.  I really came around once I listened to the whole album.  Still not a big fan on the older stuff.
