This week The Banff Centre of the Arts announced the bands
and producers that will be taking part in their second annual Indie Band
Residency. This is a program that selects a handful of up and coming Canadian
bands and teams them up with some of the world's best recording engineers for
two weeks. While up there the bands will rehearse, write and record new
material in the Centre’s state of the art facilities.
Bands selected this year are: 2009 Galaxie Prize winner Woodpigeon
from Calgary, AB; Basia Bulat from London, ON; Montreal’s The Witchies – who just
finished recording with Arlen Thompson of Wolf Parade, and
Vancouver’s Analog Bell Service (full disclosure – this is producer Chris Kelly’s
band).
The musicians will be working with Grammy award-winning producer
Husky Höskulds, who has worked with everyone
from Tom Waits to Elvis Costello; Montreal-based Howard Bilerman, whose
Hotel2Tango Studio is at the forefront of that city’s indie scene – famous for
his involvement with God Speed You Black Emperor; and finally, the legendary founder
of Electric Audio Studios and the man behind the dials for bands such as
Nirvana and the Pixies, Steve Albini.
The residency begins on
Sunday, Oct 18 and wraps up on Oct 31. Some amazing results are to be expected from
these two weeks and if you are in the Banff
area you may be able to lay witness to some of the magic because the Centre is
staging two performances during the intensive:
Showcase 1: Sunday, October
25 • 9 p.m. • Wild Bill’s Legendary Saloon • Banff Ave
Showcase 2: Saturday, October
31 • 9 p.m. • The Club • The Banff
Centre
