Today on Lanarama: The Olympics 'LiveCity' Musical Acts Announced!

Posted by Lana Gay on Oct 08, 2009

If you were planning free live music events during the 2010 Olympics, who would you book?

Last night Vancouver’s Mayor announced the details of the LiveCity “free party plaza” sites that will showcase some great talent on stage for Olympic revelers.  Musical acts include, Blue Rodeo, Deadmau5, Johnny Reid, Jully Black, Wilco, Wintersleep, Sam Roberts and Alexisonfire.

In addition to these free shows, there will be a variety of Canadian talent ranging from Corb Lund to Stars playing ticketed events during the Olympics.

WHO DO YOU THINK SHOULD REPRESENT CANADA AND PERFORM DURING THE GAMES?

    Beta Band?!

    Holy smokes does this Sam Roberts song remind me of the Beta Band!

    I'll get back to fixing the website now...

    Call me crazy, but not only would it be great to see strong Canadian presence to represent us during the Olympics I'd think there should be a slightly larger proportion of BC bands (since we are footing the bill, yes?). Actually, I'd go so far as to say, why are there any International bands playing during the Olympic showcases and parties? Is it supposed to be some kind of cross-pollination of cultures? I always thought the big deal with the Olympics was for a country to showcase itself to the world. We get a massive spotlight and we use it to promote non-Canadian bands? Seems like backwards thinking to me. At least there are some good Canadian acts and it's not just all Theory of a Nickelback and such.

    @Scott - I hope you get a vacation after all this website business!

    Olympics

    I think the City of Vancouver should also take the opportunity to show off some of their local talent as well our national talent. Said the Whale and Dan Mangan are the first to come to mind however we all know there is a tonne of good bands that call Vancouver home right now.

    Holy smokes Scott is right.  If I wasn't paying attention I coulda swore that was the betas.

    while I don't overly agree that American bands should be playing at our olympics, I'm super duper excited that Wilco is playing.

    Joel Plaskett has done a lot for Canadian music so I'd like to see him.  Along with the classics like Leonard or maybe Neil or Joni.  For newer artists that I think really deserve it: constantines, arcade fire, feist, BSS, Black Mountain (and/or associated acts), the New Pornographers! yeah definitely the NP's!

    Oh, and where did this blog picture come from?! It is absolutely fantastic! As scary as a riot squad with submachineguns is... it's just not the same when they're rockin' Segways.

    @Mattyjames

    I see your point about the Canadian classics Neil, Joni ect. However I would rather not see any of them play as I feel there is a bit of stereo type amongst the average musical consumer that those folks are the only thing to come out of Canada for music. I would rather showcase the depth of our musical talent in this country.

    I echo mattyjames' w/ the Plaskett recommendation... I know he's playing a ticketed show with Steve Earle but he should be headlining! and the other recoomendations too. There are so many amazing Vancouver artists right now that I can't imagine them NOT tapping into that talent.

    and! in the suburbs, Richmond is hosting something called the O Zone (sounds like a 90s boy band) which will have Tokyo Police Club, Wintersleep and Bedouin Soundclash playing for free!

    I think the music acts announced alongside the 2010 Olympic Games feature...

    ...a lot of Canadians. Not all that many "internationals".

    I'm in favour of such a mix; we should remember that, as AlexofAnders brings up (but falls on the other side of, compared to me), Olympics are usually accompanied by a cultural showcase --  "cultural olympics" if you will.

    Didn't some Canucks play in China two summers ago, during the Olympics?

    Yes, it's fine to feature fine Canadian acts at these coming winter games, but it's a good thing that people from elsewhere are also showcased -- for us Canucks, 'mong others! Being wrapped up in our own selves all the time is not good.

    As for B.C. having a bigger share, I think previous Olympic Games organisers have always taken a "national" rather than a regional stance. I bet, also, that there are strict requirements from the Olympic Committee.

    I'll second Joel Plaskett.  He is very accessible, enjoyable.  Before CBC there were so many great artists completely under my radar.  It would be a shame for the Canadian Music Scene to waste the chance to represent at the olympics to their fullest ( although we don't need anything nearly as wild as what China pulled off ).

    "Some guy" is bang on about Plaskett.  It's too bad Fucked Up aren't as accessible, it woulda been nice to have the Polaris winner at the Olympics.  How bout the past polaris winners? Patrick Watson, Final Fantasy, and Caribou should be considered.  Hell even Fucked Up should be invited, if its at least an acoustic set.  Or even their typical one, I find Alexisonfire much much much more loud and annoying and they got invited.  what have they done to deserve being there?

    @kn0ttyn3rb

    That rubbed me the wrong way when I saw it, but that seems to be the feeling I'm getting a bit. The Canadian acts are getting opener/side spots to larger American acts. Joel could easily headline his own showcase, hopefully that show is more of a dual show and not him opening for Steve Earle. Tickets to these things feel expensive to me...

    I would get The Guess Who to re-re-reform to just play the Olympics! Their performance 10 years ago helped bring them back into peoples hearts!

    @Silvor

    They are back! Well sorta, I just saw Bachman-Cummings a few months ago.  I guess you don't really need the ENTIRE Guess Who, just the 2 names everyone knows.

    @Mattyjames

    I mean the reallllll lineup of the Guess Who, with Bill Wallace (not Jim Kale.. he ruined the Guess Who name) and Donnie McDougall!

    What's sad is that there's a fake Guess Who band touring county fairs in the US featuring Sass Jordan's husband on lead vocals.. "Canadian Idol: Guess Who edition?"

    Blech!

    "Winter" bands

    Since it's Canada and winter, why not have "Winter" bands perform? Aside from Wintersleep, there can also be Winter Gloves and Wintermitts. It would be fantastic.

    Re: WHO DO YOU THINK SHOULD REPRESENT CANADA AND PERFORM DURING THE GAMES?

    I vote for a battle of the bands Old School vs. New School.

    Triumph, Saga, BTO, and Honeymoon Suite vs. Bend Sinister, The Arkells, Constantines, and Malajube.  Winner gets to play the closing ceremonies.

    @Tim: what about Loverboy???? (arguably the most annoying band of all time, Canadian or not)

    @Silvor: I read that! I guess that goes to show to always put the band naming rights in YOUR name.

    oh and @keydive: You make a valid point (#9).  I retract nominating the dinosaurs.

    I just reallllllly wish we could celebrate the New Pornographers, being from Vancouver and all.  when the Grey Cup was in BC it could've been the perfect showcase for them, but I think they chose Nelly Furtado instead.  No offense to all the other up and coming Vancouver bands but they shouldn't get their big break just by being lucky enough to have the Olympics in their backyard.  Lots of artists from coast to coast deserve to be there, and I think you should have to earn your right to play at something like that.  Someone like the Cons who are celebrating 10 years of touring this country in a van.

    Realistic contenders I'd be happy with: Corb Lund or the Hip.

    @Matty

    What I heard what happened is back when the name "The Guess Who" got registered, Burton and Randy were very not interested in the name.. why would they? Burton was at the peak of his solo career, making millions of dollars, and Randy WAS BTO!

    Good news is.. rumour has it that BTO will be reuniting in 2010 as "Bachman Turner United", I would rather see it "Bachman Turner Cummings & Young", that'd be the most ultimate supergroup in Canadian history! Rumour has it that there will be a "new" BTO album, featuring tracks with Neil Young and the late great Jeff Healey!

    So...

    The VAN bands play the ticketed shows and perhaps get paid a little better than the "free show" artists?  Sounds like it's a good time to be a VAN band...
