TCNH: What Are You Doing This Weekend?

Posted by Craig Norris on Oct 22, 2009

CONGRATULATIONS TO JESSICA HENDERSON! Because she was the 7th emailer, she's won the tickets!

The Images Festival
here in Toronto is presenting a special screening of THE BQE - A FILM BY SUFJAN STEVENS this Sunday, October 25th at Innis Town Hall at The University of Toronto! And YES, I have a pair of tickets to give away to a lucky listener! I want to thank my friend, Tori Allen, from over on Q for setting me up with the tickets!

All you have to do is be the 7th person to email feedback@cbcradio3.com and tell me how boring your weekend was going to be before you won these tickets! Make sure you put "BORING WEEKEND" in the subject line!

I hope that distracts some of you from there being no co-host today. To be completely transparent about it, I am a little harried this week, prepping for my journey to The Halifax Pop Explosion!

So, if you're not going to The BQE, precisely what are your weekend plans?

    the weekend

Though I kind of wish I was going to Halifax for HPX, there is so much going on here musically this weekend, and this week, that I'm happy to be staying in Charlottetown.  Friday night You Say Party! We Say Die! is probably going to be awesometacular.

I'm also curling with a group of friends here at AVC, I'm looking forward to that.  Curling is fun!

    Hey Craig, hows it going?

My plans for this weekend include going to see Dan Mangan on Saturday.

Also I am wearing two black socks today but they are not matching black socks.

    That is all,

i'm seconding martin on the busy-ness of my musical calendar. tonight i am going to see ohbijou at baba's. friday is by divine right, also at baba's. i wish wish wish i could be at the YSP!WSD! show, but it is not in the cards. please don't judge me too harshly. saturday will either be the two hours traffic cd release at hunter's ale house, or the disco rockin llama's at the alibi lounge. there's even something happening on sunday!

the next week & some will be very busy for shows. i think i found one night that does not have a show, but i'm sure that will change!

There is a problem with the link for the Sufjan Steven's Movie.

What are the details around this ?

and what's with the strange pronouncing of Sufjan and Rich Acoin ?

Even though i'm stuck here in Brantford, my weekend is still going to rock since the Arkells are going to be stopping by the Ford Plant on Saturday!

....after that I get to get back to my six page book review on the Paris Commune.....

    @MikeV

i saw dan mangan last night here in charlottetown. it was a very small crowd, but a very appreciative one. at one point i had tears in my eyes, it was such a wonderful show. we spoke to him for a few minutes after, and he is just such a nice human being. i can not believe how lucky we are to have an artist like him make the trek all the way from vancouver.

if i did not have commitments i have to keep, i would be on the road to halifax just to see him again.

Yeah, switch our show to the Dan Mangan show, I don't really know your stance on folk but it an incredible show. I wonder what he will be like with a real (>8) audience...

Incase you couldn't tell I am going to be in Halifax for HPX but that isn't the only reason I am there. I am also there for the 2009 APICS Math, Stats, and Computer Science conference and programming/math competition. Should be a good time.

he said he was feeling a lot better, although still coughing. i was speaking to his brother who said that around 11 that evening was the first time he emerged from his hotel room in a couple of days. bravo to him for still playing!

it seems there is a "touring band" flu going around. one of the members of bruce peninsula was sick (he was coating his throat with honey! novel idea!), and will currie (wil currie & the country french) was commenting how his voice was going.

    Busy Weekend

See now that the weather has turned on me and I can no longer go backpacking, climbing and all that jazz. So I have to make up for lost time and get really drunk on my weekends till ski season starts up.  So this weekend I am going to a company social (aka free booze!) Friday after work then I'm heading over to rocknrolllosers place for a bit of drunk pictionary. On Saturday I'm doing a bit of volunteering for the Mustard Seed in the morning then I'm going on a pub crawl that some girl I used to work with is putting on for her broomball team. Sunday I'm just going to focus on how terrible and tired I feel.

  37. MikeV
    37

    this weekend...

I'm going to deadmonton to visit a couple of friends. On Saturday night I'm going to see my friend's boyfriend's band, so hopefully that will be good. The show starts at 7, which i thought was kind of strange. And then I'll probably get hammered and try to forget how stressful my week has been.

Re:So, if you're not going to The BQE, precisely what are your weekend plans?

Tailgating all day Saturday before going to see my team, the mighty USC Trojans, take on mcfflyers beloved Oregon State Beavers.  Hopefully the Trojans stick it to the Beavs but you never know.  If the Beavers prevail I'm not talking to Lee on Monday.

Unfortunately it's an evening game so that means I'll probably miss Islands at the Troubadour in West Hollywood.  Or I leave the game early.  We'll see what happens.

I did see Hawksley Workman play last night though and that was an incredible show!  Great singer, but I don't think I've ever seen someone banter that much.  I know for a fact I've never seen someone banter that much in the middle of songs. That was a new one.

It was awesome, and I'm a big fan of banter, but even I was thinking "This is a LOT of banter".  Very entertaining.  And I never realized what an amazing falsetto that guy has.  It was shockingly beautiful when he did it.  Not as nice as tb3's falsetto, but close.

You Say Party! We Say How High!

Can't wait for Saturday! Yesterday was as awesome as two days ago was terrible. All happened yesterday:

-Secured not one but TWO babysitters for my Halifax outings

-found my long-lost (since Sept) house keys in the beer storage fridge at work- weird!

-Got happy messages from Said the Whale's tour manager

-found my lost beloved missing earring in ny driveway

-made almost $200 tips, spending money for my trip, at work last night. On a night I expected to be asleep by midnight. Oh well, I needed the cash more than sleep.

    Best day ever- til Saturday!

    more PhDs!

congrats pman1978!  i'm convocating this weekend too, with my PhD in Biology from UofOttawa.  FINALLY!  yayyyyyyyyy!!!! so this boring weekend involves entertaining my parents in from out of town for convocation, so probably a lot of good eating (last weekend I took them to the the Dan Mangan and Will Currie show at the Blacksheep Inn and that was a pretty big hit, although there were some comments about the prevalence of 4/4 time and not being able to understand the first band's words...).  there's a cool thing going on at the Mayfair Theatre involving old silent films with live music that we may check out (Nosferatu and Faust, with bands like The Flaps playing... last weekend there was something similar, with music composed by Mike Dubue and performed by The Hilotrons).

    best to you all.

    Dan Mangan

I have been trying to ignore that HPX is happening due to having NO money... which is partially due to seeing Corb Lund twice last week and spending it all on booze.

Then I heard that Dan Mangan was playing tomorrow. Now i'm going. What are the chances of it selling out, any thoughts?

@martin oh! i forgot about that! thank you for reminding me. i sort of want to put it in my quotes section. heh.

@marggie it will be well worth the extra poorness. oh gosh. hard to say if it would sell out... do you remember what venue? i am apparently too lazy to look. i have yet to really experience HPX, so i don't really know what it is like in terms of crowds.

    @marggie

Be warned that HPX sells "passes" for the weekend. So, even though there may be no tix in advance (and thusly, none sold), people that have purchased passes are able to get into these shows! There are tix at the door, sure, but I would suggest getting there early!

  91. Benoit from Ottawa
    91

    @ fumblebee (12 - Mangan))

He played the Sheep oh, last weekend. The place was packed, the show was great.

(Though the crowd was inattentive and unapplauding for openers Will Currie and the Country French, sad to say. Buggers had come for Mangan and they weren't gonna be forced to applaud or even pay attention to what was, after all, an energetic and musical performance. Their bad.)

Back to Mangan: bit of a lovefest, ceedees sold, et cetera. Spiffy other players, as you recall I'm sure: excellent electric standup bass, cute and proficient violinista, and excellent other female singer and keyboardist. Good stuff all around, what. Just what the PEI show shoulda been.

Old as the hills, that remedy. Apparently works to an extent. (Outside of the soothing coating and easy-to-take taste, honey has its own on-board preservative -- which obviously kills other things, right? I suspect it'll kill buggitos in the throat by contact.

there is a bus, though it is lengthy... if you've got the extra money, you can fly, it's only a 45 minute flight or so.  Otherwise you can bug people on peilocals.com, or halifax locals to see if there happens to be anyone heading between the cities.  I can even check the days, I've been meaning to do a Halifax roadtrip...

    @ pman1978 - a PhD...

Sorry guy, ain't no such thing as "just receiving my PhD at UW convocation" (my italics).

Just a masters, okay; a doctorate, though, takes real, sustained, novel research.

Congratulations are in order, I think.

    @Jenelle

Parking: There's tons of street parking all around Centennial Hall and Victoria Park. There is even underground parking that you get at turning onto Dufferin and it's just after the City Hall entrance.

Debit machines… good question. Just called. (I pulled a "Vish") So the response I got was "I don't think I have ever been to a record show that a vendor has a debit machine". So bring cash. Lots of it.

How lengthy is the bus?  the bus that goes from St. John's to my folks place takes 10 hours.  ;)

    Debit Machine Robery!

Man oh man, I second the cash suggestion. You want to start pulling money out of those atms in bar's you're gonna be forking over at least $1.50 (sometimes upwards of $2.75) for that machine alone, let alone what your bank would charge for using it.

    thanks, Benoit///the intelligence question

ha! thanks for the great exclamation/expletive, and the congrats. hey, i meant to exchange contact info with you last Sat. night at the Mangan show, but couldn't face wiggling my way back through the crowd. next time.  i was near the front, sitting, and didn't notice the inattentiveness of the crowd to Will Currie.  that is crummy.  their set was SO high energy.  i was impressed, both by them and Dan and his band.

Craig, not to disillusion you, but you may just be surrounded by people with an all-consuming pathological fear of facing the real world and getting on with their lives (the blogging may be another symptom of this... for me, that is to say)...

I was just checking out some train/bus combos and it looks like I may be able to swing Moncton/Charlottetown shows - maybe.  I'm going to do a bit of work when I get home from, well, work.

@ Craig; musical events past and future (damn, Word line changes don't transpose here! manual, manual, manual)

Craig, talking on the radio is hard, I mean people listen! And then they comment! They talk back! The nerve…

Now for some serious musical recounting and extrapolating.

Last night, I popped down to The Mansion, in Kingston : Julie Fader opening (new ep ceedee), with sweetie pie Sarah Harmer on the drums , and singing harmonies, for two songs. Then The Library Voices, whut I like much, having heard them at the Sheep some months back and bought the ep. Exciting band (new drummer, I was told).

Then, In Flight Safety. Put in the earplugs.

Tonight, I’m committed (awww) to go hear Gordie Tentrees; Rodney Decroo; and Dave Lang at the Mouton Noir.

Tomorrow Friday, the Sheep hosts the United Steelworkers of Montreal and The Fugitives.

On Saturday, it’s Rose Cousins with opener Erin Costello (from Halifax).

    <catches breath>

Sunday, Lynn Miles, Finest Kind, Missy Burgess, Annie Gallup and Katherine Wheatley. I don’t know if I’ll turn completely into a barfly this weekend. Maybe. (Visions of the 2nd movie The Fly…)

as I commented on your facebook status, that would be awesome if you could make it to Charlottetown, I know I could get some people out to a Tuesday night show (despite the non idealness of that day of the week).  Baba's Lounge or Ampersand would be the ideal venues I think.
