TCNH: Water Cooler Wednesday, October 28, 2009 & More Bucky Talk!

Posted by Craig Norris on Oct 28, 2009

Happy Hump Day, everyone! And, as an added bonus for everyone working here at The Broadcasting Centre in Toronto, it's Wellness Fair Day! Today's the day when organizations/businesses set up in The Atrium and offer services/advice on our general health and well being. Both physical and mental, from acupuncture to food, it's all represented downstairs.

All I know is that there's free popcorn. Did you hear me? FREE POPCORN!! Just the idea and knowledge that there's free popcorn already eases my mind. I'm not kidding. I love popcorn.

It's also Water Cooler Wednesday on The Craig Norris Hour which means that, for your health and well-being, the comments section is your oyster. Let's gather around and get to know each other better while we discuss...

:: Coyotes kill Toronto singer in Cape Breton. (Taylor Mitchell's R3 page)

:: Final choices revealed in CBC 2's "Great Canadian Song Quest"!

:: After a decade, Lilith is back!

:: Liz Taylor reviews Michael Jackson movie

:: Well, at least he's back in the public eye (Bowie)

As always, you don't need to stick to those topics. Go off on a tangent if you want. Or discuss the two CBC Radio 3 Bucky Awards categories that I'm highlighting today; Best Vocals and Best Reason To Learn French!

    I was rooting for Fundy park.  That is my favorite place in the world that I've been to yet.

    Even though I spent 5 hours lost in the woods there last year, when it was getting dark, and me, and my friend, left very tired and bloody.  (But it was SOOOO beautiful).

    @Craig They just ran out of popcorn, sorry.  (But at least MikeV won't be hungery this winter)

    songquest

    i have to say "pukeroo" to Chantal Kravy-etc. for Manitoba.  But that may be the snobby-indie-bee-otch in me speaking.

    interested to hear what Martha Wainright comes up with for The Blacksheep Inn.  Will she include Lucy the Pug in her song, as hoped for by Rich Terfry?

    also Hawksley and Algonquin Park.

    But here's a question I'd like to ask the artists when they're done.  If they happen to not have any experience with the part of their province that they were "tasked" with writing a song about, how did they deal with it?  Did they do research?  Did they travel to that part of the province to get some quick personal experiences to write about? Because song-writing tends to reflect personal experience, right?  How many of them already had a connection with that particular place?  Will that be reflected in the quality/success of the songs, I wonder?

    Anti Vaccine

    Yesterday I was reading this Wired article when trying to distill information on what to do about the H1N1 and regular vaccines.

    Two things soured me on the anti-vaccine campaign. One is that they quote the bible to defend their position. Two is this quote, from the article, which is pretty telling:

    "Hence the death threats against Paul Offit. Curt Linderman Sr., the host of “Linderman Live!” on AutismOne Radio and the editor of a blog called the Autism File, recently wrote online that it would “be nice” if Offit “was dead.”

    I’d met Linderman at Autism One. He’d given his card to me as we stood outside the Westin O’Hare talking about his autistic son. “We live in a very toxic world,” he’d told me, puffing on a cigarette.

    It was hard to argue with that."

    I have a hard time listening to a former Playboy model trying to tell me that vaccines are bad and cause autism, when there's no direct proof of that. Especially when we consider the messenger, likely is a byproduct of the plastic surgery arts.

    oui monsieur, nous voullons pas gettez notre keyboard covered with butter when eating popcorn and computer-using at the same time.

    it was a solution to a problem at the time. I'm not ashamed.  tb3's solution to the same problem was putting the pocorn in a class and drinking it.

    but aadmaa is right that it may be a good chopstick-training regimen as well.  it may not be ideal because the popcorn is so light and has so many points to grab that it makes it too easy!!! when my good Chinese friends had me over for lunch, they started the meal with a saucer of peanuts (out of shell) so we could practice our chopstick use before diving in to the meal.  it forced good technique.

    @stevierayk re. Stompin' Tom

    from my Radio2 Drive listenin' a couple of weeks back, although the the quest was for new songs about Canadian places not yet captured in song, they highlighted that there are a lot of Canadian place songs out there already by playing them, after a plug about the contest... and I heard Stompin' Tom at least once.  trying to remember the name of the song... a town name... about being a farm-hand, I think??

    @ LeyLey re. porkchops

    My mom always lightly breaded and browned the porkchops with paprika and garlic in a pan, and then transferred them to a baking dish, covering them in a sauce made with ketchup, brown sugar, and lemon juice (not sure the proportions), and baked them for an hour. Sweet and sour and so, so tender. My favourite comfort food.

    Sorry I can't tell you the exact recipe for the sauce, I just don't usually measure. I think it's about 1½ cups of ketchup to ¼ cup of brown sugar and a couple tablespoons of lemon juice? And then I put in a liberal dose of cayenne pepper which my Mom never did, cause I like it spicy. Not exactly health food.

    Pleople keep posting links in the body copy, or bit.ly links when all you really need to do is click the linky looking thing in the compose window.

    Feral coyotes

    Y'know that headline came after a long summer of weekly headlines about the Phoenix Coyotes dispute, so there was some tasteless unintentional humour caused by the news that the Coyotes had somehow for some reason killed someone from Toronto.

    oh popcorn

    Try making popcorn and add some sugar and some salt.

    it's tasty.

    Kinda like Craig's Shaggy

    Agreed. Also, apparently, the starches. Which yields the N. American problem of people who live on Cokes, chips (& such), and bready things.

    Funny though, by association, it's animal fats that often get the bad rap, in all this.

    Speaking of Free downloads...

    Saw a tweet from NXEW about a free timber timbre album (yes, album!) download from the Arts & crafts page

    but only 'til Hallowe'en, kids, so get over there now

    It's Wenzdee?

    Senor Norris,

    I had a meeting all morning so I haven't had my fill of "It's Wenzdee" today.  Can I expect some before the show is up?

    What can I say, I'm lazy about my link making but at least it was still a clickable link.

    Benoit

    so, are you an XTC fan, or do you just like Chalk Horses?

    @ Jason Neve

    A solution might be that your friend change input devices. I don't use a stylus, and I don't know if another device even exists that could substitute.

    What I'm saying is based on having come close to carp-in-the-tunnel syndrome, with a standard Microsoft wheelmouse; I avoided the problem by getting a Logitech ballmouse. It allowed more variation of hand position.

    Advice Please

    Okay the Facebookers have weighed in but I need some more advice... Tomorrow night should I go see Land of Talk or Slipknot?  I really wish they were playing together.

    117

    @MusicSoop

    Land of Talk! No question about it.

    118

    Huh

    I don't think I have ever heard the Agnostic Mountain Gospel Chior played on R3.

  119. tb3
    119

    @MusicSoop

    Neither.

    Go to the sports bar and request Brooks and Dunn.

    Failing that avoid Slipknot. At all costs.

    @ krib

    Fan of chalk horses.

    I really like stuff that comes from olden times, no-one being too sure when.

    Did XTC use a similar image? (Google, google). (Google is a god: got it. "XTC’s 1982 English Settlement album")

    Here, a site on chalk horses (listed on the right; microscopic thumbnails do lead to pixxes.) Tum dedum dedum. http://www.wiltshirewhitehorses.org.uk/altonbarnes.html

    Ooh, the linkification worked. Thanks, Absotively.

    @keydive

    Really?

    Wow. We've been playing them for a long time! They were in pretty heavy rotation, actually!

  122. MikeV
    122

    @tb3

    Last time I went to the sports bar I told them I only wanted to hear Dunn. I can't legally get into the details of what happened after but lets just say I was asked not to come back.

  123. tb3
    123

    Oh AlexOfAnders

    Clickable I can live with.

    But if we're on the same wavelength of lazy, which I think we are, then having to copy and paste the link, that someone wants me to check out, means I won't. I'm too busy bottling my semen to keep from the witches to have to copy and paste a link.

    Chantal

    I like her!  Winnipeg Hot Tub monopoly and all.  I like indie-rock as much as the next person on here but Chantal does have a pretty awesome voice and if I have to pick a mainstream Canadian artist to listen to she'd be right near the top of the list.  And yes, that song "Time" is a guilty pleasure.  And no I don't like that song from Armageddon either.

  127. keydive
    127

    @Craig

    Yeah. Maybe I just don't pay enough attention or they were in heavy rotation when I worked at one of my old companies and couldn't stream.

    I have been a pretty big fan of there music for a while. It took me two concerts and a few trips to various music stores to buy all of their albums.

  128. Benoit from Ottawa

    @ Craig

    Plaskett, Old Man...

    Ya, Old Man would have been desireable, but these things are popularity contests. So how could Joel not come out on top, especially considering the wave he's been riding for a few years, a wave that's been intensified by 3.

    A bit like with the Sheep in Wakefield. Is it fair that Ontarians, no doubt mostly from Ottawa, determined the choice for Québec?

    Maybe not, but it's a fact due to the, um, demographics of the anglo CBC radio audience in and near Québec...

    Same with Old Man Ludecke (sp? too lazy to check). He is excellent, but in a popularity contest...

  129. Craig Norris
    129

    @Benoit...

    Agreed, Sir.
