TCNH: New Releases for October 27, 2009 & More Bucky Talk!

Posted by Craig Norris on Oct 27, 2009

I know that everyday is special on The Craig Norris Hour! So, how can I get more excited from one day to the next? Easy. I remain excited all week. Whoa. Hi-o.

Tuesdays are special, of course, because this is the day of the week that artists release their music into the world for consumer..er..consumption! And I get to preview and highlight some of those right here on this show! Today, listen for new releases from Tegan & Sara, CFCF, Devil Eyes, Prairie Cat*, Language Arts, and Madrid!

But that's not all! Because it is CBC Radio 3 Bucky Awards Season, I'd like to continue yesterday's discussion about The Most Canadian Song, but let's also talk about this year's Best New Artist! Remember, you can nominate more than one artist or song, folks! Just hit the links above, comment below, Twitter us @cbcradio3, or email feedback@cbcradio3.com! I'd love to know your thoughts on these!

*From Prairie Cat's myspace: Hello all, I regret to inform those of you who were awaiting the new album "It Began/Ended With Sparks" that the release has been delayed due to a manufacturing error. I am really upset and am typing this as I can't sleep for the second night in a row. The release has been pushed back to January. Thanks for your understanding. -PC

    This isn't directed at any category in particular but, hot damn, that Julie Fader song is good! Glad to see she's playing tomorrow night in Guelph. I look forward to checking it out.

    @Craig

    Thanks Craig, for some reason I had it in my head that there was something imminently due from them.  I suppose I can wait until 2010 for new music...

    would Mother Mother be considered a best new artist?

  9. MikeV
    09

    @MoniSki

    I wouldn't think so as they already have two albums. Also their last album came out last year.

  10. MoniSki

    @MikeV

    darn.

    Well don't the Junos and other award shows give the "Best New Artist" to ppl  who have been around.... i believe they have... however I guess the Buckys are way cooler. damn.

  11. MikeV
    11

    @MoniSki

    Yeah I know its confusing trying to figure out what exactly "new" means.

    re: TCNH: New Releases for October 27, 2009 & More Bucky Talk!

    i was confused too because i wanted to nominate a band that is new, but they're last album came out last year and their new one next year...

    Best New Artist...

    First album released after January 1, 2009. I believe.

    14

    I am going to buy that new Teegs n' Sazzy too

    Something I have been thinking about for a long time (well really 5 minutes is a long time on the internets)

    Okay so, if Radio3 were WKRP in Cincinnati, then of course Steve Pratt is Arthur Carlson. And Lisa is Baily Quarters; Lana is Jennifer Marlowe; Vishal is obviously Les Nessman. And Grant… well we know he's Johnny Caravella. But I am kind of struggling with Craig is are you Venus Flytrap or Herb Tarlek? Or Andy Travis?

    That's 2 minutes of your life you'll never have back. You're welcome.

  15. MikeV
    15

    @tb3

    Oh wow that is a tough one! I would say Herb.

  16. tb3
    16

    Prairie Cat

    Geez. I just read the letter you posted from Prairie Cat, and man I feel bad for the guy. I wonder what happened. Bad enough that it was pushed back, but till January is insult to injury.

  17. hgummo
    17

    yay T&S!

    I don't feel like it's totally new since I already listened to the album on myspace a few times, but I'm still excited to own it :D.

    OH NOOOOOOOO!!!

    I woke up and stumbled downstairs. Grabbed the little bag that has my Amaretto Coffee in it. Put on the kettle and upended the thing over my french press.Empty. Like five grains came out.

    ;_; I guess it's tea for me this morning.

    I'll think about best new artist when I'm caffinated. Maybe Clues?

    New Albums

    I am somewhat excited for the new Tegan and Sara Album that comes out today.  I doubt that I will be running out to buy it today but I will likely pick it up in the next week or two.

    Also I broke my tea plunger mug today :(

    How will I drink my loose leaf tea now?

  20. keydive
    20

    @Fumblebee

    It appears that we are having a caffination problem on the blog this morning.

  21. MikeV
    21

    Best New Artist

    Does anyone think maybe it should be Best New Project? I mean for example Clues is a new band but Alden Penner is certainly not new to the scene. Or am I just overthinking the whole thing and instead should concentrate on this WKRP thing?

  22. fumblebee
    22

    @keydive

    You can just put the leaves strait in the cup. They will sink when it's done steeping. You can strain the last little bit with your teeth. It's what I do.

    i really like this cfcf track

    the sample at the beginning reminds me of a 90s dance song but i can't place it....

  24. mcfflyer
    24

    Morning all

    Does anyone know the source of the artist CFCF's name?  I know that he is from Montreal, and Montreal was/is the home of the radio station that back in the 1970s was an English-speaking Top 40 station, CFCF.  I wonder if that's where he got the name.

    A 30 dollar thermos?!!!

    Good lord they are all like 30 dollars!!

    Screw you thermoses!!!!

  32. keydive
    32

    @hgummo

    My binge drinking weekend went well. Ashley's pictionary party was pretty fun we had a pretty good time. The pub crawl I got a little tipsy and made out with someone and woke up on a strange couch so I'm gonna put that down as a win.

  33. keydive
    33

    @MikeV

    It's LEAK PROOF! I'm not sure why I need that sort of functionality but I'm fairly certain that I need a stainless steel leak proof tea thermos.

  34. MikeV
    34

    @keydive

    The part of me that doesn't like leaks says yes, but the cheapness in me says no. It's very confusing for me. I might need help.

  35. fumblebee
    35

    @keydive

    but you could just get a regular cup. Tea gets out of the way and hangs out at the bottom all by itself.

    @keydive

    That is a nice looking thermos.  Did you read the reviews?  They were all, like, "be careful, if you make tea with boiling water and put it in this and go to drink it three hours later, you might burn your tongue, because this thermos is that good."

  40. MikeV

    no caffeine issues over here. i've got a pot of delicious coffee brewed.

    also, poorly constructed thermos/travel mugs make me sad. i have a cupboard full of them. i have learned the importance in investing in a well made one.

  43. mynameismoe
    43

    @Absotively

    i might be sold just on that review alone. i am the slowest coffee drinker on the face of the earth. i get made fun of on a regular basis. cold coffee has become my life...

  44. hgummo
    44

    re: TCNH: New Releases for October 27, 2009 & More Bucky Talk!

    i wish there was some kind of thermos that would keep drinks that perfect drinkable temperature. when i get a coffee i have to wait until it cools down a lot before i will drink it, but by the time it gets to a good temperature i have to drink it super fast or it will cool down too fast and then i'll have cold coffee. and no one wants cold coffee.

  45. keydive
    45

    @Absotively

    See I don't like to drink my hot beverage to fast and I really dislike going and taking a sip of tea and it's cold. It grosses me out. Even more so with coffee eckk.  So this thermos being able to keep my beverage nice and toasty warm for hours makes me think I'm gonna be $30 poor around 12:13pm MST.

    @MikeV

    I like it I'm not sure I can find that thermos very easily.

    55

    @hgummo

    No. Just guessing. Which I guess I shouldn't do.

    And, MikeV; No. No I am not Herb Tarlek. I'm more like the guy that had the foot powder that Mr. Carlson used.

    Slightly off topic...

    i wanted to congratulate The Wilderness of Manitoba, who are featured today on HearYa (in my humble opinion, the best indie music site out there)

    http://www.hearya.com/2009/10/27/the-wilderness-of-manitoba-hymns-of-love-and-spirits-album-review/

    earlier in the week they featured Dan Mangan... nice work Canada!

    Language-Arts!!

    I haven't seen anyone saying they're excited for the release of Where Were You in the Wild by Language-Arts. Hopefully you'll give them a listen, they're an excellent band with a really unique sound. I believe they're on tour right now so you might even have the chance to see them live. Go see them, they've got dates in western Canada still --> http://www.myspace.com/languageartnet

    @ hgummo - solution to coffee temp?

    Lookee, I have this terrific travel mug from Lee Valley -- stainless with a cap. Polished shiny. Only thing is that it doesn't readily fit car cupholders. Tough.

    Anyway, you buy a coffee, or make some, and in this latter case put it into a regular cup; at some point (judgment judgment), your repour it into your newly-bought insulated cupmug from Lee Valley -- which is cool, right? It cools down the coffee some as it warms up, and you're left with, tadaaaaaaaa!, is merely hot coffee that cools down slowly.

  66. Benoit from Ottawa
    66

    @ Craig (49)

    I agree. Allatime, urine for cold coffee.

    ;)

  67. hgummo
    67

    @benoit

    genius! I like it! That might just work perfectly.

  68. Benoit from Ottawa
    68

    @ stevierayk: sexiest artist

    Ya. Like what, for hetero guys? H. women? Gay guys? Sapphic women? Transgendered? Crossdressing? Okay, I may be skidding off the rails a little, but you get the picture.

    Also, is skinny sexy? (Ya for some) Is a more, um, envelopped figure sexy? Repeat previous answer.

    Besides, 'cept for a few, singers are often more embarrassed, if not straight pissed off, at being considered "sexy" rather than blipping good singers.

    There.

    (That said, how about that lead singer from Whaletooth, Elise LeGrow?)

    NEW ARIST - SHOULD BE ARTIST THAT IS JUST BEING DISCOVERED

    A new artist isn't an artist that has just recently put out their first recording - all musicians regardless of success have been putting out recordings, demos for years - it shouldn't be based on release dates.  Best New Artist should be an artist that is just starting to pick up momentum - we all know it takes years.  I really hope they don't base it on release dates - they don't even really exist anymore because of the internet.
