Because Craig's returning from Pop Montreal, today's show is an encore presentaion of last week's Listener Co-Host Initiative!
Well isn't this fun?! I'm Steve Krysak and I'll be this week's participant in The Craig Norris Hour's Listener Co-host Initiative. I sent an email to Craig about this in April! Those months of waiting patiently, checking my email for any sign of a response have paid off!
I'm a student at the University of Waterloo studying the amazing world of Environment and Business. I'm a co-op student as well, meaning that every four months I play pretend. I get to go off into the real world and work 9-5, make a little money and not take classes. (Shout-outs to danir, another Waterloo co-op R3 fan!) Right now I'm doing marketing and undergraduate recruitment for the University of Waterloo, so if you want to know about your post-secondary options, let me know. The job isn't too bad, and I get to listen to R3 every day.
But I'm not just a student or a promoter of the great institution that is Waterloo, I'm also involved heavily in the campus radio station 100.3 SoundFM. I do a weekly show full of interviews, music and banter which you can find out more about right here where I tweet and podcast and do all of that fun stuff. I've been lucky enough to sit down and interview some of my favourite musicians in the Canadian scene and see some great shows over the last couple of years.
My experience with Radio 3 starts in the passenger's seat of my sister's car back in the day when you could hear Grant Lawrence on the FM dial (2006?). I was waiting for her to come back from some errand and listening to Grant interview the The Barmitzvah Brothers. I think this was around the time they released Mr. Bone's Walk-in Closet. I loved what I heard and when I got back home that night, I borrowed my sister's credit card (I was a youngin' then) and bought the CD online, thus beginning my relationship with great, independent, Canadian music.
More after the jump
I'm hoping to highlight some great artists on today's show. I rushed my playlist to Craig and have since realized that I've forgotten some great bands like The Rural Alberta Advantage, Ohbijou and even The Barmitzvah Brothers. Luckily someone at R3 can read minds and included some of the great bands that I forgot. Look forward to hearing come CFL Sessions, John K. Samson, Immaculate Machine, Born Ruffians and much, much more.
I should be on the blogs for this as ‘stevek91' (it's probably better if you don't ask what that name is about), though I am supposed to be at work while this airs, and I sometimes get pulled into exciting meetings at the last minute. I'll try to stick around though.
Enjoy and have a great day!
ps. Thanks to my Dutch friend Joanna for lending her body in the picture for this blog post. I almost didn't make it after my laptop crashed halfway through its creation, and I had to start from the beginning... but I'm pretty happy with it overall. Don't hate me Craig!!
