TCNH: Listener Co-Host Initiative w/ Steve "stevek91" Krysak

Posted by Craig Norris on Oct 05, 2009

Because Craig's returning from Pop Montreal, today's show is an encore presentaion of last week's Listener Co-Host Initiative!

Well isn't this fun?! I'm Steve Krysak and I'll be this week's participant in The Craig Norris Hour's Listener Co-host Initiative. I sent an email to Craig about this in April! Those months of waiting patiently, checking my email for any sign of a response have paid off!

I'm a student at the University of Waterloo studying the amazing world of Environment and Business. I'm a co-op student as well, meaning that every four months I play pretend. I get to go off into the real world and work 9-5, make a little money and not take classes. (Shout-outs to danir, another Waterloo co-op R3 fan!) Right now I'm doing marketing and undergraduate recruitment for the University of Waterloo, so if you want to know about your post-secondary options, let me know. The job isn't too bad, and I get to listen to R3 every day.

But I'm not just a student or a promoter of the great institution that is Waterloo, I'm also involved heavily in the campus radio station 100.3 SoundFM. I do a weekly show full of interviews, music and banter which you can find out more about right here where I tweet and podcast and do all of that fun stuff. I've been lucky enough to sit down and interview some of my favourite musicians in the Canadian scene and see some great shows over the last couple of years.

My experience with Radio 3 starts in the passenger's seat of my sister's car back in the day when you could hear Grant Lawrence on the FM dial (2006?). I was waiting for her to come back from some errand and listening to Grant interview the The Barmitzvah Brothers. I think this was around the time they released Mr. Bone's Walk-in Closet. I loved what I heard and when I got back home that night, I borrowed my sister's credit card (I was a youngin' then) and bought the CD online, thus beginning my relationship with great, independent, Canadian music.

More after the jump

I'm hoping to highlight some great artists on today's show. I rushed my playlist to Craig and have since realized that I've forgotten some great bands like The Rural Alberta Advantage, Ohbijou and even The Barmitzvah Brothers. Luckily someone at R3 can read minds and included some of the great bands that I forgot. Look forward to hearing come CFL Sessions, John K. Samson, Immaculate Machine, Born Ruffians and much, much more.

I should be on the blogs for this as ‘stevek91' (it's probably better if you don't ask what that name is about), though I am supposed to be at work while this airs, and I sometimes get pulled into exciting meetings at the last minute. I'll try to stick around though.

Enjoy and have a great day!

ps. Thanks to my Dutch friend Joanna for lending her body in the picture for this blog post. I almost didn't make it after my laptop crashed halfway through its creation, and I had to start from the beginning... but I'm pretty happy with it overall. Don't hate me Craig!!

    I just had to do one of those things for work that you HATE doing. I had to tell someone some bad news that I knew was going to send them into a fit. They had a fit and then it was done and now I can listen to the radio!

    Wow, that is really sad about the campus radio thing. What's another 5 bucks. Personally, I'd rather support campus radio than paying ridiculous fees so that athletes can get a free ride. Still waiting on our station here in the Okanagan...

    Great song choices by the way. I am thoroughly enjoying TCNH this morning..but it might have something to do with Steve's alluring voice.

    Loss of Funding

    Honestly that is just sad. Campus Radio is an integral part of the university culture. Also, we all know do what Radio 3 does for independent music but on a community scale.
  29. MikeV
    29

    oops

    We know campus/community radio does what Radio 3 does for independent music on a community scale.

    something to understand about UW

    There's something you need to understand about tuition and fees at UW. Engineers at UW pay the highest undergrad tuition in the country. We also make up (one of?) the largest groups on campus. Arts may technically be bigger. The point here though, is that UW Eng hates the amount of money we pay, and votes to decrease tuition and fees whenever possible. The undergrads only managed to push through a bus pass two years ago, and the grads still haven't managed it. We only got dental two years ago as well.

    I believe UW sustainable projects or whatever also got their $5/term funding taken away, and many eng. students even take back their WEEF (endowment fund) money, despite the fact that it funds every lab and every student team in the faculty. Engineering even tried to withdraw from Feds (more than once), partly to reduce fees.

    Sure it sucks, but students here get nickel-and-dimed to death on fees, and almost every fee increase in the 7 years I've been here has been blocked, and almost every fee decrease has been passed. Bus pass and dental are the only two exceptions I can think of.

    37

    @ gcranston

    Really? I was thinking of my former campus of the University of Saskatchewan where athletic fees make it one of the most expensive tuition fees in the country.

    Personally, I'm all about free education (I'm waiting for the tomatoes to be thrown). I read a study yesterday about how university graduates more than pay back double their education fees in taxes.
    Whats really sad is how many people are unable to get an education on account of high tuition or those who do, will be paying it off for the next twenty years.

  40. gcranston
    40

    @Craig

    I'm not saying that I support what happened (full disclosure: I don't think I voted). I'm just trying to explain the culture on campus and why the result doesn't surprise me at all.

    There's absolutely no exposure for campus radio here whatsoever. I didn't know the frequency until Steve mentioned it in that interview just now, and I've been on campus for over 7 years.
  41. gcranston
    41

    @KeepingItRiel

    when I say we have no athletics, what I mean is we don't have a particularly large or expensive sport program. There aren't huge sports scholarships here.

    yeah UW

    Welcome Steve. I'm a waterloo grad and worked for recruitment and admissions at SJU, so I know that you must be having a killer time. Say Hi to Dana, Jodi and Megan if any of them are still there.

    Also, can't say that I ever listened to 100.3, so I hope you're doing something good there that gets people interested.

    You have two options. Start reading PhD comics because it's poignantly relevant to your situation in life, or, don't read PhD comics because it's so accurate it depressing.

    I'll take a large jacket if you have any. Can we meet up at biker clubs once a month across the country?

    @jmikelittle
    Jodi is still here! I'm actually heading to a meeting with her in an hour! I'll mention you to her.

    @gcranston
    It's true that exposure for SoundFM has been a big issue. The problem was in the staff that formerly ran the station. It was very community centric then while being primarily student funded. Now we've had funding taken away and we've shifted to being more student centric. We've managed to raise awareness of our presence on campus quite a bit considering the lack of resources and manpower we have. Really we are doing the best we can right now with little to no revenue coming in. What we need right now is support from the students so that we can become the radio station that this school deserves.

    Also, good luck on your last 18 hours as a masters student!!

    @Craig
    It's too bad you couldn't get off the train.. there is a creepy tunnel between the main station and the far tracks.. or at least it was creepy when I was there..
