Live on CBC Radio 3: Stripping Down w/ Spiral Beach

Today's Guest:  Spiral Beach

Spiral Beach

I’ve heard many musicians say:  if a song can be played on an acoustic guitar without the backing of a full band and still sound good, then it’s a good song.

I believe that in a lot of ways though I also think that there are plenty of songs that depend on that electro rhythm or a weird synthesizer part and it doesn’t necessarily make them weak songs by any means.

Stripping a song down to its basic form certainly makes the lyrics more apparent so if you gauge a song’s merit on the words, this is one way to sort the wheat from the chaff.

I once did some co-writing with great American songwriter named Jules Shear who was actually one of the people responsible for getting a show called MTV Unplugged off the ground years ago.  And though the word “unplugged” has pretty much gone out of vogue these days, there’s still an interest in artists doing acoustic versions of songs, or performing solo.  Here’s a recent example involving Metric and another regarding The Weakerthans.

Now, there are those who probably find stripped down recordings and stripped down performances kind of boring.  I’ve heard this complaint before too.

So I think its time for YOU to weigh in on our POLL QUESTION then:

DO YOU LIKE IT WHEN ARTISTS GO ACOUSTIC?  Would you buy the record?  Will you go to the show?  What artist would YOU pay big money to hear “unplugged”?

A few years ago I saw K-Os do an acoustic show where he sat on a stool with a guitar for the duration of his performance. I kept waiting for him to get up and bust out, but he didn't, and it wasn't a bad show because of its unexpected mellow pace, either!

Best reason to learn French - Coeur de pirate, for sure!

    I do, I do!

I love the song Help I'm Alive by Metric, but couple the radio play that ditty is getting with the fact that my two and a half year old daughter requests it every single time we're in the car, and I have actually got tired of it.

So I love that there is a completely different, stripped down version of it. One, I'll add that I just got our daughter to accept in lieu of playing the other, one more time. And I think I am liking the version of that song better that way now.

    A. Yup, Coeur de Pirate for sure. A slam-dunk, that. (Ok, maybe for some it's Malajube.)

    B. "Acoustic" : is best live, can be very good recorded too. (I have Nirvana's Unplugged MTV or whatevs; it's absolutely great, showing just what there was about Cobain.)

Also, the continuum is a bit longer; it goes, I think: 1) amplified (a lot); 2) "unplugged" (or minimally amplified); 3) a capella and thereabouts.

A capella bits, or very minorly accompanied unamplified voices, are not rarely done at the Sheep; every time, it's a showstopper. People are fascinated when the singer goes full direct, without a mike's mediation.

I'm a big fan of acoustic unplugged/stuff but I think that if you're going to do that your lyrics and your voice have to be really stellar because you have nothing to hide behind. I was recently a really terrible show  where it was just one guy and his guitar, and the fact that he had no band backing him up really exposed his poor lyrics and lack of vocal prowess. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that if you're going to go acoustic, you better be damn good at what you do.

It would be interesting to see a band like Two Hours Traffic or Spiral Beach or You Say Party! We Say Die! do something unplugged because one of the main reasons I like those bands is because they're upbeat and dancy.  I don't know if I would like them as much without that factor, but it would be interesting to find out.

Last night's Colbert Report was fabulous. Do go see it on the web if you missed it. The Word was excellent in particular, and the interview, but there were at least two other high points.

I love what emphasis on vocal prowess does when applied to songs that don't need it, ie Alanis Morisette's rendition of "My Humps" or anything by Richard Cheese.

I was an idiot and posted this in the wrong blog, but to reiterate, I love what emphasis on vocal prowess does when applied to songs that don't need it - ie Alanis Morisette's rendition of "My Humps" or anything by Richard Cheese.

i love love love unplugged/acoustic stuff ... but like everyone said, this makes the performer have to rely heavily on their lyrics and voice. also, it creates a total different mood, and i genuinly enjoy that, especially with a song that is usually really upbeat - it's amazing to see the mood of the song change by eliminating some key instruments. its quite astonishing.

Yeah that's always funny. My friend does a great cover of Hit Me Baby One More Time... taking away all of the bells and whistles (per se) makes you focus on how ridiculous the lyrics really are.

I'm a huge fan of Unplugged.  My fav acoutic band is Wintersleep.  Well they actually went from acoustic to electric, but fans rarely hear an acoustic show anymore.  And we know their newer songs can be played acoustically, ie: Obilvion sounds sweet acoustically.

I'm a huge sucker for lyrics and singer-songwriter fare, so naturally I love acoustic versions of songs. Example: I listened to both simultaneously, and the Cons' "Too Slow For Love" was enjoyable in a totally different way than "Kensington Heights."

But I actually like Help I'm Alive a lot more non-acoustically... the anxiety-inducing beat is what makes the song for me.

i'm guessing tariq is going to be talking about this with Sprial Beach (my apologies, i can't actually listen to the live-stream here at work) but the video of them playing acoustic on a (Toronto?) city bus that was posted on this blog some time in the last year is what made me think, wow, those guys are talented.  I'd seen them rock out at the Ottawa Bluesfest, and the flashy outfits and antics put a huge smile on my face, but seeing them sing harmony on that bus is what really made me take them seriously.

i think it must be a taste thing.  i'm a sucker for singer-song-writery stuff.

    These lyrics are ridiculous, haha.

    @crimewaves re shoes

I know, I really wasn't a fan of that song when I first heard it. But now, somehow, I love it. Maybe you just have to get past the ridiculousness and try not to take any deep meaning from the lyrics.

That's one song that would not stand up well as an acoustic performance. haha.

    @hgummo

You're right. At first I hated his song 'Beep Beep Beep' because it had the same element, but it grew on me! I guess lyrics in techno and electronic songs aren't meant to be super-important.

    Acoustic versions

I kind of like singer-songwriter-type stuff, but only in limited quantities.  I'm currently much happier to listen mostly to louder/more energetic stuff.  I also love lyrics, though.  So I do love acoustic versions, especially if they show off aspects of songs that get a bit lost in the usual version (the lyrics, the melody, the vocals).  However, although I might go to the show, I won't buy the album.  An EP, maybe, or a few tracks, but not a full-length album.  And I'm not likely to listen to the acoustic version as often.

...ok, that ended up more rambly than I meant it to be, but I don't have the energy to edit it.  Sorry.

Unplugged can be an amazing way to experience a band/solo artist. As previously mentioned Nirvana and Alice in Chains have amazing acoutic sets where both crowd and artists are sitting down. I find this is an amazing way for artists and bands to get intimate with their fans and possibly show them a mellower sound. If a band advertises their unplugged/acoustic show then they probably have an experience in mind for their fans, and already know they can back it up. So yes, I would definatly get tickets and, buy (or sample) the album. I would prefer a live acoustic show to be a smaller crowd, in a small intimate venue, so i imagine tickets for this would be expensive. I would fork it over for Metric and Wintersleep.

    Acoustic versions

I think acoustic versions are exactly like cover versions.  They can be completely inane and "mtv unplugged" or they can be really interesting and add insight to a song.  If it's a different or surprising arrangement, I'm for it.

    acoustics

i really like when a band goes acoustic. it's more than just stripping down the songs, it's hearing them as close to how they were written as possible. it also shows just how talented the musician(s) actually are - it's hard to hide the foul-ups when nothing is plugged in. the arkells did a great acoustic set at nxne this year which started off the a clapping-stomping tune. that was one of the highlights of my nxne because it broke everything down to a bunch of guys having fun singing a song.

given a choice, i would probably pay a little extra to see any of my favourite bands do acoustic sets but if it had to be just one, i would go with the new pornographers. with that roster of musicians, the results would have to be mind blowing.

Composing often occurs acoustically, so performing acoustically tends to reveal the roots and the inspirational aspects of songs.

I guess composing, recording, and performing are 3 distinct things, and there are no rules on how they should be, which is wonderful.

I have been thinking about how I would perform the songs on my new album. As it is called Amplight, it would be ironic to perform them acoustically, but I think the posts here are convincing me that it would be fine to do it that way.

The King Khan & BBQ Show

I think stripping these guys down to an acoustic setup would have fantastic results.  Just imagine a soft folky version of Waddlin' Around.

    Plug it back in please.

Okay, call me crazy/attractive, I'm just not that into them.

Listen, unplugged albums have their charms and I'm sure there are plenty of fans out there who love them. It's not them, it's me, we have just drifted apart. Unplugged songs leave me wanting more. I mean in the beggining it was fun, loads of instruments and harmonies, but now you just want to be alone all the time, where's the excitement? YOU NEVER TAKE ME OUT ANYMORE!

Sorry that got really personal, but my point is that when you go unplugged you you stray from what I fell in love with, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't; this time it didn't. No, stop crying, look maybe in a few months you'll have a new album and we can hang again, but until then, I think it's over.

Call me when you've plugged back in.
