Wrath of Khanna: What'cha Watchin'?

Posted by Vish Khanna on Jan 08, 2009

Hello!

I hope all is well out there. It's time for another segment of the general inquiry sensation that's not exactly sweeping the nation, What'cha Watchin'? For those of you unfamiliar with this thing of ours, it's a film and TV club of sorts, where discussion about current motion picture phenomena takes place. Are you ready? I'll go first.

Over the holidays I did as little as possible but I did end up seeing quite a few movies. Even on the plane I took to stay with my in-laws, I shelled out money to watch The Dark Knight again. I've been trying to see it in IMAX since I first saw it but the screens are actually getting smaller, damn it. On the plane ride back, I rented Ghost Town starring Ricky Gervais. Somehow it transcends its cheesy I-can-see-and-thus-must-help-dead-people premise; it's really quite good! Gervais can do no wrong it seems.

I know it's been hyped to no end, but Slumdog Millionaire really is breathtaking. Set in Mumbai, it's a vibrant-looking love story that's really whimsical, sure, but director Danny Boyle and a cast of amazing newcomers render it with compelling skill.

Speaking of great casting, Milk is actually a remarkable ensemble piece. Sean Penn certainly deserves every accolade he's been getting for his portrayal of revolutionary City Supervisor Harvey Milk. But what really helps Gus Van Sant's film transcend the biopic gutter Hollywood has been immersed in lately is its attention to a powerful supporting cast. It's pretty ingenious since Milk's crusade for gay civil rights was far from a one-man battle.

On a smaller scale, Doubt is essentially an acting class. I mean I assume it is; I've never been to an acting class. The script sure is subtle, feeding crazily intense performances by Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams. Truly amazing.

Man, I could go on and on. I didn't mention Big Trouble in Little China, which I watched again recently. And The Wire! I finally started watching The Wire! It's incredible! But I should stop now.

What movies or TV shows have piqued your interest these days? What are you really excited to see?

Please share.

Thanks,

vk

I watched my first episode of The Wire last night! Holy crap is it good! I can't believe it took me that long to get into it. I think it's the first show I've ever watched where after 1.5 hours I still had no idea what any of the character's names were.

    so many movies

    Hi Vish!

My roommate and I had about a week after we got back from holidays at home, and we watched a lot of movies.

    Lord of the Rings Trilogy
    Batman Begins
The Explorers (first movie I ever saw in theatres!)
    Roger & Me

more that I can't even remember.

We also are watching Dead Like Me.

I'm going to have to look up The Wire...

I've been watching Arrested Development pretty heavily for the past week. Why must Fox cancel everything that is good? Between Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks and everything Joss Whendon has ever done with that studio, I can't understand why Fox kills everything that is great with their channel.

I have also cought up on a bunch of movies I have wanted to see, including Christmas on Mars, by the Flaming Lips. It was really disappointing.

Been renting previous seasons of The Office. So funny. Other than that I don't watch TV.

Dead Like Me was great *sobs*

My favourite character was easily Rube…

    TV shows

I've also been watching Arrested Developpement, which is great. But to tell you the truth, that show was just before it's time. I didn't even like it when it was still actively airing new episodes, but I love it now. Fox killed it because it wasn't a big enough hit, which is understandable. I bet now it would work great though.
Also been watching Scrubs... not sure if I love it or hate it yet.

I thought Christmas on mars was weird and boring. Not like the usual weird and awesome standard that the lips have

I managed to hit "the axemen" marathon on the history channel. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I think it's made by the creators of Deadliest Catch.

... although i hear that there are new people running it now and Joss Whedon's new show 'Doll House' that is due to start soon should be given a fair shot. it's a wonder that he went back to Fox since they've screwed his shows over so often. something or someone at Fox convinced him that it was worth going back so we'll see...

over the holidays, i caught up on The Office and Chuck. a friend recommended Chuck and, at first, i was skeptical but it is actually quite entertaining and good. there are a few things in it that could get a bit tired if they aren't careful but for now i'm enjoying it. The Office is brilliant, i just fell behind last season.

i'm disappointed that Pushing Daisies was canceled.

i watched a couple good movies over the holidays too: Blade Runner & Mysterious Skin.

I just caught up on both Brotherhood and Dexter. Dexter is good but Brotherhood is dynamite.
I just started rewatching the Sopranos from the start, after borrowing Season 1 from a friend. Nice seeing some of the old characters again... because in this show not everyone makes it through each season...

    The Ceeb Shows

Anyone catch Being Erica on Monday night? It was a great show and surprised with the music they played.
I skimmed thru Wild Roses and it doesn't seem interesting.
Other TV shows I watch are the Law & Order series (minus Criminal Intent because it got moved), Little Mosque, Sophie and Rick Mercer Report.
Another favorite show is Chuck but it is on a January hiatus.

I just watched Ghost Town last night and loved it.
Ricky is the best. And I'm 1 season in to the Wire, also loving it. Also making it through the Ken Burns Jazz Anthology Documentary Series. Amazing stuff.

    Big Trouble in Little China!!

That is one of the most hilarious movies I have ever seen. I love the part where they step down the ladder into the Underworld!
If only it were that easy!!
    Good movie to watch hungover.

    The Wire

all the folks loving 'The Wire'? great show. when you're done, if you can get your hands on 'Homicide:Life on the Street', give it a shot.
same team, done earlier. also shot in Charm City(aka Baltimore)
great performances all around. it won't seem quite as brave as it was originally (was on NBD so language was 'tamer'). it's like 'the wire' training camp.
good good stuff. start and the beginning and keep with it. it's worth the journey

I think I've just finished watching every episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Now I gotta wait for new ones. It's the only TV show I've found to be funny on the level of South Park.

Over the holidays I watched The 400 Blows, The Bicycle Thief, Persepolis, City of God, Grindhouse, Run Fat Boy Run, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, La Vie En Rose, Paris je t'aime, Mars Attacks, The Passenger, Chop Shop, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and Six Pack. The best were The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (Because of Marie Josee-Croze of course) and City of God. I should've found time for Big Trouble in Little China though, it is a classic.

    History Of Pop Culture

I want nothing more than to be watching A History Of Pop Culture by Kim Clarke Champniss but it is hands down the most illusive program ever broadcast.
The odd time I do manage to catch it decades have spanned and I end up tied up for hours on Wikkipedia trying to fill in the gaps.

    Gran Torino

Clint Eastwood Re-Affirms that he is in fact, the single manliest man who has ever lived.

This movie is awesome, and has been completely snubbed by the Golden Globe awards.

Lets hope that Oscar is more kind.

    Movies

A Movie that caught my interest is a movie called JCVD.

This is a movie about the washed up actor, John Calde Van Damme, and he is played by John Calde Van Damme. It's supposed to be funny, serious at some points, and some action thrown in for good measure. I have no idea if it'll be good, but something about a washed up actor playing himself peaks my interest.

Oh and Watchman, because it looks odd and fun.

Right now, I am addicted to anything and everything on the Food Network... I dream of the day of not being a student and MAYBE being able to afford some of that food! The Next Food Network Star starts Sunday and I am SO there!

Over the holidays I got into Slings & Arrows... a great little show and even more funny to watch being from Stratford
Also, spent hours watching DVDs of Kids in the Hall... ahhhhh haha.

Slumdog Millionaire, omg... the outhouse part, I can't remember laughing that much in a theater!

Re: Wrath of Khanna: What'cha Watchin'?

I'm currently into the show "How I met Your Mother", which is an American comedy. One of the main characters is a Canadian, and the main characters always bug her about being Canadian (and inserts fake Canadian trivia in the show from time to time), and in reality, the girl who plays the roll is actually Canadian! Also on one episode they played an islands song (Don't Call me Whitney, Bobby"), it was so obviously Islands too, but that was a nice addition to that episode.

4 Days off for Christmas and 5 days off for New Years and no traveling and no visiting family you gotta fill up the time somehow and those were all movies I'd been waiting to see. I have 2 weeks coming up... I wonder what'll happen then, haha.
