LIVE FROM TORONTO! THE 2009 POLARIS MUSIC PRIZE GALA!

Posted by Vish Khanna on Sep 21, 2009
12:15 AM And, according to Caribou, the winner of the #polaris music prize is....FUCKED UP!!!!

12:05 AM
Holy Lord. F***ed Up are destroying! And Pink Eyes is half naked. And Kat and Justin from Lullabye Arkestra are fueling the mayhem with their vocals!

11:45 PM
Good lord, I'm getting hungry. All this running around. Down the stairs, interview someone, back up the stairs. This wasn't supposed to be exercise. Hey Rosetta! are playing the lovely part of their first song of the night but I know a rock 'n' roll storm's a brewin'...

11:23 PM
Watching a whole room of people smashing the crap out of some fake silver platters with wooden spoons during Elliott BROOD might be the highlight of the night so far. And Chad VanGaalen. That guy's a one-man highlight reel actually...

11:17 PM
BRRROOOOOOOOOOODDDD!!! Here comes Elliott Brood! They've outfitted people with saucers and spoons to stomp and crash along to!

10:58 PM
Just had a nice chat with Joel Plaskett and his dad Bill. Chad VanGaalen is set to hit the stage. Hey, Grant just shouted out Dave Hodge! Oh, here's Chad. Wait, Michael Barclay's up first to introduce him. Oh, and he shouted out the incomparable Leonard Cohen. Okay, here's Chad. Let's listen. Btw, I think Chad's prolly gonna win this thing...

10:43 PM
Wow, Joel Plaskett just mesmerized the room with a gorgeous performance. Oh, he's bringing out Anna Egge and Rose Cousins to join him and his dad for "Deny, Deny, Deny." Sounds gorgeous in here.

10:18 PM
Jian just a round-about intro of K'naan who has just hit the stage with "Waving Flag." Let's listen, shall we.

10:00 PM
Craig here. Patrick Watson is walking through the crowd. Jian Ghomeshi is back on percussion, sitting in a la his MoFru days.

9:25 PM I'm back from hunting out interview subjects. Great Lake Swimmers are on. Now here's a record I love to death. I hope they do well tonight.

9:11 PM
The crowd really loved the stripped down version of Metric's "Help I'm Alive." I'm watching our co-hosts get made up. It's awesome. TV is interesting.

9:05 PM
Famed music historian Alan Cross is introducing Metric. I can't see him because they've drawn a giant red curtain in front of my face. I think this was on purpose. Oh, Metric are on. Still can't see....

9:02 PM
A single person just applauded this alliance between MuchMusic and CBC Radio 3. Grant and Sarah just made light of it. Oh, they're just announcing the list of short-listers and people are screaming in approval.

8:58 PM
Polaris founder Steve Jordan just concluded a speech welcoming everyone to the Gala. People are sitting in quiet anticipation for this party to start...

Good evening everyone and welcome to CBC Radio 3's live coverage of the 2009 Polaris Music Prize Gala! We've set up shop at the Concert Hall in the Masonic Temple in Toronto (Led Zeppelin once played here! And R.E.M. too I guess) where the next Polaris Prize winner will be announced!

As you may know, we're broadcasting the whole shindig on Sirius 86 and www.cbcradio3.com, from 9:00 PM until it ends EST with a cast of some of your favourite characters! Grant Lawrence! Craig Norris! And me! Me! You don't know?...seriously? I'm a regular host here. Vish Khanna. My name is Vish Khanna.

I'm inside the Concert Hall blogging about everything that happens so keep in touch here for all your Polaris Prize Gala needs. Also, if you have any questions for any of the nominees, please post them and I'l try and ask them for you!

    @Chad VanGaalen

If you win, what would you put the money towards? Recording in a full-fledged, polished studio? More obscure instrumental toys? Or life in general (everybody has a heat-bill)?

Also, I saw you (CVG) play Saturday night @ Church of the Redeemer. Can you shed some light on that old banjo of yours? I <3 old gear, haha.

    Cheers,

I'm not saying that he deserves to win because he's nice. He deserves it because he wrote a triple record that actually manages to make sense and be cohesive. He deserves it because he's been making beautiful heartfelt pop songs on his own for ten years plus all my beloved Thrush Hermit records. And instead of moving to Montreal or Toronto, he keeps on making music in Dartmouth. He's in the bloody phonebook! The fact that he's fantastic to his fans is only icing on the cake.

Grant vs. Sarah / R3 vs Much

I think the difference is entirely due to their usually working in different mediums (media?).

I would like Sarah/Much'ss sound-bite-ish style a lot better in short TV segments, or if it were stuff about music videos rather than live performances.

In those same circumstances, I probably would find Grant's style annoying, even though I like hearing him as a radio host.

I consider K'Naan a dark horse pick. I mentioned on air today that I was surprised when a radio DJ in Hong Kong (Amanda Putz knows her) told me they played K'Naan. I consider him somewhat a surprise.

    Fucked Up

I'm not really a fan, but to be honest, I think their stuff is quite interesting. I admire the way they combine different styles, even if I'm not fond of the result, so I'm kind of glad they won.

I like some of the other nominees a lot more, but I admit that a lot of the stuff I like isn't especially innovative (though it is creative, which is different).

In summary, it is pretty nearly past my bedtime and I may be too tired to type coherently.

    Fucked Up...

I like the fact that Canadian "Jurors" voted on this Canadian band and gave it the most prestigious award for "Best Album For Artistic Merit." All discussion ends there. This is NOT a Juno, a Grammy nor a video award from some fucking place that does not play videos! Bravo, Fucked Up! You win!

    what a shock

I can't believe f'd up won. I just can't believe it. Those judges are idiots. I was watching the whole show on Much and kept thinking why did f'd up even get nominated. There was so much talent there tonight and the only crappy band of the bunch wins??? I lose my respect for the polaris award. Elliot Brood and Hey Rosetta are miles and miles above F;d Up. What is going on? Ok that is it for my rant. I am just really disappointed.

    Entertainment!

Surprise Win! I just wanted to say that I wish I could have been there tonight. I listened in and couldn't contain my laughter during Vish's interviews. I hope it looked (and was) as fun as it sounded.

I am so excited to see Elliott Brood (my fav to win) in Vancouver.

    Yay for music!
