Wrath of Khanna's Album of the Week: Sahalee by The Got to Get Got!

Posted by Vish Khanna on Aug 12, 2009
Good day everyone. I hope all is well. My Album of the Week is entitled Sahalee and it's by Halifax's the Got to Get Got. On today's show a couple of members of the band are scheduled to join me to discuss this new record.

If you're a fan of pop-infused, mid-90s indie-rock, then you're sure to find something to like on the band's eclectic new record. If you don't know what I'm talking about then, as far as the band seems to be concerned, all the better. While others hear references to bands like Pavement, TGTGG have been deflecting that specific comparison as of late, while offering few hints about their real muse. That's fine by me, but I do have an affinity for the sound of TGTGG and can hear the influence of early Local Rabbits on songs like "Gettin' Dirty in the Afterlife" and some Superchunk pops up here and there as well. And also Rihanna. There's at least one overt reference to Rihanna on Sahalee

With its fusion of styles and pop culture references, Sahalee is a fascinatingly entertaining record and I'm eager to speak to members of the Got to Get Got about it on today's show. Stay tuned!

What do you make of the music of the Got to Get Got? Old or new, Canadian or not, what is YOUR album of the week?

    Good morning Vish, I like what I have heard of the Got to Get Got. Thus I guess I should add this the ever growing list of albums I need to listen to.

    Speaking of albums of the week, mine would have to be The Most Serene Republic's '...and the Ever Expanding Universe." Which I received courtesy of this show.

    Okay now I need to get my caffeine fix ready for the morning.

    I'm obsessed with Sunset Rubdown's newest album right now! Have been listening to it over and over while doing some night time web designing. Perfect!

    I have always enjoyed The Got to Get Got, and will probably pick up their album when they play here in Charlottetown in a couple weeks. :)

    I was going to pick The Most Serene Republic's album as my album of the week but Mike V beat me to it. Clearly two of us can't have the same album of the week, so I pick K'Naan's The Dusty Foot Philosopher, which I've been listening a lot to recently. It's such a great album, and much more solid front to back than his newest (in my opinion).

    I've liked the song Rattle Off for some time. Reminds me a lot of the Crooked Rain 90's yes. And because of that I think I really need to see them live to formulate just how much I like them.

    And the great news is that they just frickin played Call The Office! I belong to the Facebook Group, I follow the Twitter feed, how did I not notice they came through town?

    *goes and checks*

    Wait I know why – there's no mention of the show on the Facebook Page or the Twitter that I can see. So you can let them know if the show was poorly attended I know why.

    The things I ponder

    Does anyone else ever wonder what Radio 3 would have been like if it had been around in the 80's?

    @MikeV

    it'd be a lot more neon.

    How much you want to bet Vish would have had a flock of seagulls haircut?

    Craig would definitely have a mullet.

    80's Radio 3

    Plus you know they would play the theme to The Raccoons!

    if I had more time today (stupid being busy at work) I'd photoshop on a flock of seagulls haircut on Vish... And it would rock.

    This has been the week of K'naan for me. I've been listening to his album pretty much non-stop, even subjecting my friends to it as I drive them around. For the free ride they'll just have to accept some K'naan in their otherwise K'naan free lives.

    @DiannaT

    Troubador or Dusty Foot Philosopher?

    cause ya know, I already picked DFP... ;)

    Re: Wrath of Khanna's Album of the Week: Sahalee by The Got to Get Got!

    I'm listening to Hey Rosetta's Into Your Lungs with a couple Two Hours Traffic songs to fill up the CD-R I made for the car (it's been scratching CDs lately so no more originals for it).

    At first, I was finding myself waiting to hear the songs I love (like A Thousand Suns) and wanting to skip the rest.

    But I think that may be because it's not exactly a car-trip sort of CD. They use a lot of rising and falling sounds and that's not good for car-driving either (I'm constantly wondering 'wait where's the song?').

    K'naan and TMSR

    It's interesting that K'naan and The Most Serene Republic are resonating so much with people this week. And an older K'naan album no less. Not sure what this means but it's cool!

    @Vish

    It's also interesting you played Eric's Trip as I have been listening to a lot of Julie Doiron lately as well.

    It's almost like we all listen to the same kind of music?

    freaky!

    After seeing the Deep Dark Woods and Chad Van on saturday I've been rocking their latest ones pretty hard the last few days. Other than that its been J Dilla, a Lil Wayne + Grizzly bear mashup, and a Sufjan remix tape by montreal producer Tor (crazy good!)
