WoK: The Sappyfest Breakfast Club! With R3 Listeners! Destroyer! Clues! Snailhouse! Calvin Johnson! Julie Doiron! Baby Eagle! + More!

First of all, that is not a goatee up there; it's just the most substantial part of a travel beard I was/am cultivating. I am not a fan of goatees or the Singles Soundtrack for that matter. Secondly, this show marks the conclusion of my report from Sappyfest, which took place last weekend in Sackville, NB and today I bring you the thoughts and wisdom of many guests.

As you may know, Thursdays are traditionally my Breakfast Club shows, where I go and share a meal with someone while I'm interviewing them. Well, I feel very lucky because R3 listeners Vanessa and Kim Blackier organized a big group pancake breakfast last Saturday, inviting friends and fellow listeners to drop by Vanessa's house. Pictured above from left to right: MikeV, Kim, Vanessa, Kim Thayil, fumblebee, and Martin Cathrae

So you'll be hearing a bit about our breakfast, not to mention some other people's ideas about early morning food. To be specific, stay tuned (or skip ahead) for:

New Sackville resident Steven Lambke of Baby Eagle/Constantines telling us about his move;

The origins of the first annual meeting of the east coast chapter of the R3 Breakfast Club;

The menu items and participants at said meeting;

After their great Calm Down It's Monday set, Julie Doiron and Fred Squire pontificating about why Sackville is A#1;

Indie-rock icon/K Records founder Calvin Johnson suggesting why Sappyfest works so well;

The George's Roadhouse Breakfast Situation (oh, you'll see) with fellow frustrated patron Rachel from Brantford;

New Brunswick-bred Snailhouse spilling some beans about his mostly new-song set;

Lisa Gamble from Clues talking about electrocution at the Hillside Festival and the importance of a good breakfast on the road ;

Destroyer refusing (refusing!) to tell me what he had for breakfast;

Okay, that's it. Please enjoy the show. At your leisure even...

    ....moving on

    I always find myself having a less that spectacular breakfast during these shows, but for the first time I get to be jealous of my own breakfast?!! However, it is nice to relive this morning as it was definitely a great time.

    You look worried in that photo Vish? But if I were that close to Kris I would be worried too. He likes to steal wallets.

    So Martin, you've set an appearance record on The Breakfast Club! Well done, well done indeed! (what's with the Canon neck strap? thought you had a Nikon)

    And I am swirling in wonderment trying to figure out what the letter banner on the wall says. Can one of you spill it?

    (MikeV, is this post works, it means you can't post without a comment title)

    on free breakfasts

    So yeah, i ended up somehow eating awesome breakfasts for free two days in a row. First was the awesome sappy breakfast club breakfast I. The second was from George's Roadhouse after waiting two and a half hours (and drinking like ten cups of coffee(not as good as Kim and Vanessa's coffee(I need to get a french press))) the waitress realized that she has not in fact written down our breakfast order. It was ok, it was crazy that day so we tipped her anyway because the breakfast was tasty and we (Me and my non R3 going friend Adam) had drunk at least half of our weight in coffee. It didn't really seem in the sappy spirit to punish someone for making a simple mistake.

    I wish all my breakfasts were free though.

    You have no idea how hard it is being a mountain man in NB as we really don't have any mountains.

    Rice pudding

    It was tasty but I think the highlight of that breakfast was the fantastic fruit salad. I think I ate at least half that bowl.

    @fumblebee

    George's breakfasts are the best! The surly waitresses, the slightly stale coffee, the option of having beer at 11 am on Sunday... what could be better? It all adds to the theme of George's
  22. enerie
    22

    More on George's

    ... and they actually are surly.... I once asked for more coffee and got an actual scowl! A scowl! I think it's part of their tipping scheme- They make you feel like you're inconveniencing them so much that you have to compensate by tipping them. I love it there. I heard they were in high spirits for Sappy.
  23. MikeV

    George's

    Sadly I never made it to George's. Next year I hope.

    @Martin, Kris

    You guys should have bought a ticket and booked a room before you had the money to do these things like me. That way you could fret the whole summer on how the hell are you going to pay for all of this.

    That is how it is done.

    @dawn.h

    A non breakfast club aside…

    So, you and I both embroiled in the playoffs – you in floor hackey, me in its expensive and much hotter cousin, roller hackey.

    I am happy to report that we won our first game Monday night in a shootout. And last night again in a one goal game despite only finding out about our game Tuesday night, and able to get half the team (and not the good half).

    We're poised to do what we've done a couple other seasons: Lose all regular season and somehow win in the playoffs to contend for first place.

    I call it veteran savvy. Cause it sounds better than saying I'm old ;)

    And if you have a Q&hopefullyA query, email feedback@cbcradio3 with Q&A for Vish in the subject line. And if you don't know, in the message area is where you typerwrite your question. Hit send.

    46

    @Mike

    You can eat whatever you want! That's the best part of getting older. Having Bacon and Beer (good album name) for lunch if you want. Or making a whole pizza and then eating it for weeks. Or having cereal and a rum and coke for breakfast!
  47. dawn.h
    47

    @tb3

    Glad to hear about the playoffs. We're pre-seeded going into ours I think. And it's only two weeks. So we were bound for the bottom from the start of playoffs. It's fine though. We're a beer league team for sure. But we did step it up for the last playoff game even though we were half a team. Something about that pressure makes you play tighter. Good luck next week.

    And thanks for the how-to, good buddy. But last time I emailed Vish that way on a non-Monday he didn't get back to me. I think I'll hold onto my question until Monday and hope I don't forget.

    Vish's Ivory Tower

    He's bombarded of late, and doesn't always respond to emails. But I am pretty sure he gets them, to later forget about.

    But you might want to try what I do? Standing outside of his house, looking in windows into the wee hours of the night.
