WoK: Sappyfest Album of the Week: Beacons by Ohbijou! + Much more!

Posted by Vish Khanna on Aug 05, 2009

Hey everyone. The photo above captures Toronto's Ohbijou during their evening main stage set at Sappyfest in Sackville, NB this past Saturday night. And even though I took many photos of the band that night, this is pretty much the most interesting one I've got for some reason...

So, today and tomorrow my shows will be focused on my adventures at Sappyfest and I've got a fair amount of excitement in store for you, oh yes I do. As well as an Album of the Week discussion with Casey Mecija and Heather Kirby of Ohbijou about their excellent new record Beacons

(UPDATE: Ohibjou on Beacons;

and again, discussing Sappyfest;

), today you'll be hearing from:

Nick Ferrio of The Burning Hell;

one-time Sackville resident/Dawson City Music Festival Artistic Director Tim Jones;

Jon-Rae Fletcher (and at one startling point, Fred Squire and Woolly Leaves);

Brent Randall and one of his most talented Pinecones, Paul Linklater;

John O'Regan, Tim Bruton, and Kyle Donnelly of The D'Urbervilles;

local hero Shotgun Jimmie;

and R3 listeners MikeV and fumblebee;

I'm still recovering from the dizzying rush of this trip but I hope you'll tune in to hear this show (and stay tuned for a special Sappyfest edition of the Breakfast Club tomorrow) because it seemed pretty rad to me...

    Ohbijou

    That is a great photo Vish. Such a great show they put on that night!

    Wow

    No mention that I've heard yet… how do those new tires and alignment drive, Vish?

    @Vish

    Also, how did Fredericton treat you pizza wise? Some of the places here are hit and miss.

    The Tiger Paw tires seem to be working out fine, thanks!

    We went to Jack's Pizza and that joint right beside it. Both! It was okay but not like the ol' days...

    Re: Fred Za

    Oh right Luna Pizza. Yeah I know what you mean it used to be better, but you can still get a decent slice here.

    Pizza

    The only time I ever had pizza in fredricton a bunch of friends from UNB got this pizza that was like 3 feet across for 20 something dollars.

    I would like to at this point mention...

    I am terrible at names. All of them. If you have a name i'll forget it at least twelve times. So I apologize to the Adam Moraity Organization who put on a super duper show full of old time rock and roll and jangly guitars, you are pretty sweet.

    Oh hey, Cord Lund is on, sweet. He played the first country I ever liked.

    @fumblebee

    I believe its Adam Mowerey.
  10. MikeV
    10

    correction!

    Mowery
  11. fumblebee
    11

    see...

    that's at least five times I've frigged up that name since I saw the show. I remember Adam Mowery Corporation and Adam Mowy Organization. le sigh, it is a disfunction.

    Who are you again??? Where am I???

    You also accused me of getting some bands' names wrong (which I've done) but couldn't cite one example...
  13. fumblebee
    13

    also

    The D'UBERvilles instead of the D'URbervilles, that french band that Vish couldn't pronounce and I lost in translation. Also I think I have mention Jeff Randall and his Pinetrees and Jen Randall (she's my roommate) and his Pinecones, Shogun Jimmie (I swear he is big in Japan haha) as well as simple drawing blanks on several names.

    Can I just say that the D Apostrophe Urbervilles were great?!!!

    @Vish

    ugh, I still can't remember. We were talking about it like five minutes before that. I was eating fruit salad. It wasn't really your fault I think you wife said something about you getting it pronounced to you wrong.
  16. Vish Khanna
    16

    Tim Kerr

    Right, Coeur de Pirate...
  17. fumblebee
    17

    yeah!

    Courier de pirate! Man, I still need to pick up her album, I meant to do it way back when the Polaris long list was announced but I never did.
  18. fumblebee
    18

    ah well

    I know not to pull any shit on Vish, he is like a lion waiting to pounce.
  19. MikeV
    19

    @fumblebee

    I think Vish is more like a cheetah.
  20. fumblebee
    20

    @MikeV

    Puma?
  21. Vish Khanna
    21

    Pumas

    I wear and like Pumas so let's go with that.
  22. MikeV
    22

    @Vish

    But you can run as fast a cheetah right?
  23. fumblebee
    23

    @MikeV

    Vish can actually run slightly faster than the speed of sound. He developed this ability because he missed some important interviews because the recorder wasn't on so he had to catch them. I think he moonlights as a superhero in Guelf.

    24

    Vinyl

    Since you may know Vish, is there anywhere that you can find an updated list of Canadian Indie albums that are released on vinyl?

    If there isn't something like that, then why the hell not?

    I've resigned myself to buy just vinyl over the download if I can. And pretty much stopped buying on iTunes and Zunior in place of this. But I am fininding it increasingly harder to track the bands I like (like say Obijou) that I want to pick up on vinyl aside from going to the record store repeatedly or catching the band live at shows.

    Arts and Crafts is about the only label I know that has a pretty dedicated to vinyl release policy.

    Help me Obi-Vish.
  25. MikeV
    25

    @fumblebee

    All I know is that I beat Vish, somehow?

    I still have a hard time listening to myself on the radio.

    28

    @MikeV

    I actually sound better than I thought I did. Oh and Vish only let you think you beat him I think?
  29. MikeV
    29

    @fumblebee

    It's not that I think I sound bad its just odd because you don't sound the same as you do in your head, and maybe we are at a perpetual tie?
  30. Vish Khanna
    30

    @MikeV

    No. You win.
  31. fumblebee
    31

    @MikeV

    ah, I know what you mean then. Also congratulations on your win (what did you win?)).
  32. axis
    32

    @tb3

    It doesn't seem like there is one... maybe you should start one! It would probably involve writing every record label you can think of on a regular basis, but I bet they'd be cooperative. I would help you with it if you think you'd want to.

    Of course this ignores the whole point of you easily finding out what's coming out on vinyl.
  33. tb3
    33

    @axis

    I think I may have to - maybe make it a component of NxEw.ca?

    I am interested also in finding out what, if any vinyl production facilities there are in Canada. And if there aren't any, wanna make one with me? Just so we can get free copies of the records we produce for people?

    Re: WoK: Sappyfest Album of the Week: Beacons by Ohbijou! + Much more!

    ok, damnit, I had a meeting from 8:30 to now, and I missed the whole frigging show. :( is there any way that the interview you did with MikeV and fumblebee will be online? and uh... all of the other host breaks?

    @fumblebee, the mispronounced names list you gave back there made me laugh out loud. :)

    @MikeV, I think it's a universal truth that we all have a lot of discomfort listening to ourselves on the radio.

    SappyFest

    SappyFest was excellent. The lineup was fantastic and all the bands delivered. Too bad my car broke down on the way home and it looks like I'll be stuck in Edmunston, NB for a week.
  37. fumblebee
    37

    @pwats

    that sucks. I also had transportation troubles getting home.
  38. MikeV
    38

    @Fumblebee and MikeV

    Thanks for the support. It's been an interesting and frustrating few days. We actually broke down an hour outside Edmundston, near a field of cows with no cell reception. Thankfully there was a very helpful man in a house nearby.

    The most agonizing part is that the transmission is what died and we bought the car 2 months ago from a "friend" who owns a transmission shop. Ugh.

    @tb3

    Vinyl pressing-I would do this!
    I'd like to melt down all of my children's old toys that they won't part with into records. Especially the My Little Ponies. They would make excellent Corb Lund and Horses LP's. Little Mermaid toys into Great Lake Swimmers. All the junk jewellery into Ohbijou. Pretty coloured records.
    Does this involve me moving back to Ontario? Please say yes.

    And I agree, NXEW could use a column like that.

    @ Martin

    Well, Martin,
    I like the Maritimes... it's just that my happiest times were when I lived in Toronto. My best friends live there, and we had pretty exciting fun times back then. I find life pleasant, but a little slow and lonely here. Also, I used to be a university-level math tutor, and now I'm a bartender. There's just no money in education in this stupid (no pun intended?) province. I'm from here, so I'm allowed to say that.
