I've always been a fan of the blues style that's rough around the edges with some imperfections and real raw emotion. I'm not one for flashy guitar solos and speedy riffing techniques where the blues is concerned. I lean more towards a solo that might involve just one string, a single note or two bent and repeated over and over.
And then of course, there's the vocal track. It's a critical part of the mix. The blues voice requires the strength to convey, with honesty, sincerity and a lot of growl, the struggles and pains of all men and women.
The Pack AD hits on these elements for me. For one thing, this is a duo with Maya Miller on drums and Becky Black on vocals and guitar. There's no bass player in this mix, and there doesn't need to be. There is something powerful in the stark raw energy.
There's also something powerful in the story of the way this pair lives their musical lives, touring incessantly, sleeping in their van (called Falcon) in empty parking lots where necessary.
You can hear more of their well woven road stories in this podcast as well as an exclusive first and possibly last ever recorded version of their song Stalker Blues which the band has never put on a record to date and don't plan to.... ever!
