One of my favorite albums released late last year was Brian Borcherdt's Coyotes. I love the intimacy of this recording which, as I understand it, was done in a living room with producer Jose Contreras behind the mixing board (by the couch...?).
Brian's voice is whispery and haunting in the mix and the gentle acoustic guitar notes are stark and minor sounding. And you can even hear some natural sounds kept in the mix, like a car or motorbike going by at one point before a song starts.
So when we arranged for this Session, I was sure that Brian was going to come in with just an acoustic guitar, but I was mistaken. Sure, he might sound like the lonely, mysterious songwriter on the latest album, but I think Brian likes to roll with his crew. When he showed up to do the recording, he brought some friends along with him as well as a slew of new songs which you'll hear in this podcast.
He did however perform a solo version of the title track "Coyotes", just him and his Fender Mustang electric guitar. Pretty sweet!
