Martin Streek, Legendary Toronto DJ, Dies

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Jul 07, 2009
Several Toronto media outlets, including Eye Weekly, are reporting that veteran Toronto DJ Martin Streek has committed suicide.

For those living outside of Toronto, Martin Streek's name may be unfamiliar, but for anyone who came of age in the last two decades listening to 102.1 The Edge, the name Martin Streek is synonymous with Toronto rock radio. He hosted the Thursday 30 Countdown and various live events.

Streek left what amounts to a suicide note as his Facebook status shortly before the news of his death spread throughout Toronto on Monday night.

"So...I guess that's it...thanks everyone...I'm sorry to those I should be sorry to, I love you to those that I love, and I will see you all again soon (not too soon though)... Let the stories begin."

Martin Streek had recently been let go from the Edge after twenty years of service.

Along with other CFNY alumni, streek played the soundtrack to youth. Friday and Saturday Nights were defined by Club102. I've long since moved to the west coast, and now a dedicated R3 listener. However, once and awhile, I still get a sense of nostalgia and tune into club102 through the net. Saturday night has lost it's DJ. It's sure a wakeup call to me that mental health is just as important as physical health.
