New Music Canada Track of the Day June 23: Massey and The Fergusons "The Mountaineer"

Posted by Amanda Putz on Jun 23, 2009
I got a hot tip about this band Massey & the Fergusons from Mike in Library Voices. He said I needed to check them out, and he was absolutely right. Mike and I actually don't know each other all that well but he's obviously figured out how much I love a good country song.

I selected The Mountaineer to listen to first because of its title. I'm reading a great book called Three Cups of Tea about a mountain climber from California. He's changing the world by building schools for boys and girls in the poorest, most out-of-the-way parts of Pakistan.

It turned out this song is about being addicted to drugs and being an alcoholic. Oh. But it's so great! Who cares if it doesn't inspire me the way the story of mountaineer Greg Mortenson does? It makes me want to two-step the world's troubles away in the arms of my favourite cowboy. Nothing wrong with that. Giddy-up!

The second this tune starts so will your foot: tap away to the western groove. Massey and the Fergusons, from Saskatoon, with The Mountaineer.

In these parts, a MF (Massey Ferguson) hat was pretty coveted so I hope you can appreciate my complete pleasure in their band name.

    the MF hat

I have to admit, when I saw their name I thought they were named after some dude (Gov. Gen) who has schools named after him. Then I realized it was Vincent Massey I was thinking of. Oops.
Just because I'm from Sask. doesn't mean I know a thing about tractors! I'm a city kid.
