Julie Doiron Day Declared In Bruno, Saskatchewan

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Jun 09, 2009

Thanks to listener April Nechvatel, we now know that June 7 is Julie Doiron Day in tiny Bruno, Saskatchewan (population 600). The Juno Award winning artist from Sackville, NB was in Bruno Sunday night to play a sold-out show at All Citizens, the local artists centre, run by Serena McCarroll and Tyler Brett.

Julie was presented a bench named in her honour by Tyler and the Mayor of Bruno. The Mayor's husband Gilbert, an accordionist, also served as the opening act for Julie.

Watch the video of the bench unveiling here.

    wow

i know someone from Bruno, and if the rest of the town is even half as interesting and funny as she is, I can see why they have a Julie Doiron Day!

Yeah, this will go down as one of the most wonderful shows I've seen. After the the great start with Gilbert and the bench/Julie Day unveiling, Julie and her band went on to play for nearly 2+ hours, taking piles of requests and re-learning a bunch of old songs (like love to annoy and shotgun and jaybird
's marquee glass)...at about the 1h15minute break, it was decided there needed to be an intermission...so that Tyler could do a quick beer run as the 'bar' had run out.

There is a great story on All Citizens here: http://www.thestarphoenix.com/Entertainment/Little+Prairie/1673522/story.html

and if you search the cbc radio 3 archives, you'll see this nice little story: http://radio3.cbc.ca/blogs/2006/11/Little-Gallery-On-the-Praire

Oh yeah and in case it isn't obvious from the video, the venue has a capacity of 21! I think at some point Tyler is going to have to offer a membership service to get first dibs on tickets for future shows.

    Yay All Citizens!

The best part of that story is that I thought the All Citizens shop had closed down. This is the one you guys blogged about one hundred years ago, about the couple that fled Vancouver to live simpler more ernest lives, right?

    JD day

I didn't realize the informal proceedings were being recorded! I have to let it be known that Mayor Ludwig had no idea she was about to take part in the ceremony, she was such a good sport! Serena and I welcome all to come out to Bruno any time (and especially on June 7th) to sit on the JD day bench!

    Great Story

Good to see some great news about Bruno and All Citizens! Caught Julie's performance in Saskatoon, the day before the Bruno event. She was awesome - as per usual.
