New Music Canada Track of the Day for April 6, 2009: Eamon McGrath "Big River"

Posted by Tariq Hussain on Apr 06, 2009

Last weekend's JunoFest was a trip.  I bumped into a few folks I hadn't seen in a while like Ryder Havdale from Mohawk Lodge who recently moved to Toronto.  When I saw him, he pulled out a CD and said:  you gotta hear this!!

So I did.  The next morning. Twice!  Besides the superb vocals and songwriting from Edmonton based Eamon McGrath, the "lo-fi" recording quality is another one of the charms of his CD 13 Songs of Whiskey and Light

In the album credits, he writes:  "Recorded in the basement from 2006-2008." Well, this basement production gives the album some extra bite, some bonus grit.

For this podcast, I thought it would be good to hear some reflections on Eamon's music from Ryder who recently signed the young artist to his record label White Whale.

    The good shit.

Eamon is a wild man. Him and The City Streets are definately our favorite bands that tour through Saskatoon regularly. Seeing him playing at a highschool punk show, and blowing a bunch of 15-year-old minds, was awesome. I guess their good christian parents probably wern't as down.
