Live on CBC Radio 3: The Joy of Excess

Posted by Lisa Christiansen on Apr 14, 2009
Coming Up: Ruth Minnikin
New NMC Member: Myles Deck

Sure I could have had one Girl Guide cookie and brought the box home, but... well...

Thing is I read this once and it stuck: William Blake's "the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom (okay I heard it in Bull Durham, but I would have rather read it).

There's a good chance I came across the quote on a baseball film bender, or maybe Susan Sarandon films or some such quest. Because that's how gluttony works in my life - all or nothing. Food, films and music. I get into these moods and want to explore either one whole album ad nauseam, or I take on an artist's or band's whole oeuvre and bore everyone with "listen to this." Just today I passed along the two Phoenix CDs to R3 music producer; I had exhausted them long ago. Now I can't stop listening to My Bloody Valentine's Loveless; I found it in a going-out-of-business record store and kind of forgot about it. Until now.

Ruth Minnikin interview:

What about you?

Any music adventure you've embarked on recently with gluttonous fervor?

Is there a song you listen to over and over and over again?

Are you happy to just listen to a band occasionally, or do you ride them hard and put them away wet?

    METRIC

I can't stop listening to Fantasies by Metric. Since they started streaming it on their myspace it's all I have had any interest in listening to.
I always always ride a band hard before I put the album away. Basically I listen until I find something else I want to listen to. A few songs stick around but I usually move on.
This Metric album though... it's striking a chord that hasn't been touched lately. I don't think I'll be putting it away any time soon. EVERY song is good!

the hold steady... just picked up the new album on vinyl and now I'm working my way back to the first album, trying to figure out which one is the best. I don't think they have a bad song, 4 official albums deep!

    STHD - ladyhawk

Both... depends on too many factors

    Not generally..

Every once in awhile I will just go crazy on a band and listen to everything of theirs that i can on and on. Most recently that happened with Arkells and then Hey Rosetta! The biggest binge I ever had was many years ago when I first discovered Radiohead and was immersed completely in everything they had to offer (which is so damn much!)

    Great Interview

    Love Ruth Minnikin! = )

as to the question, I think that in my situation (with publicbroadcasting.ca and nxew.ca ) I get all excited about bands but it tends to correlate to what they are doing - new album + tour generally = excitement and then it wanes until they gear up for something new.

There are particular songs I'll listen to over and over but usually that's when I first hear it, and then it just kind of goes into the mix.

Oh I Love You People So Much!

I totally agree with OneA and Lee, Mother Mother are so addictive I got half my friends hooked on them with me.

And Lisa by god the goodies! I'm rather obsessed with Pheonix now and MBV, hell yeah! I've been obsessivly listening to a new HEALTH song called 'Die Slow' that was reviewed on Pitchfork and it sorta recalls My Bloody Valentine which make me insanly happy. You can listen to it on Muxtape.com along with a bunch of other great music.

    @Lisa

Now where did Lana go? If people don't hold still you may have to have your name legally changed to "Filling in For"

    Yeah, Lisa, you and Palladin.

As I learned more about Canadian indie music, I went through my Sloan phase, then my New Pornographers phase. Both are subject to going back on the player set on repeat, but the latest artist was Mother Mother.

As much as you are filling in for Ms. Gay, in fact you're really just back in your old timeslot. Uhh, you didn't have the locks changed while Lana was gone, did you?

    Gluttonous fervor?
I teased myself with Metric - Fantasies and Shout Out Out Out Out via their MySpace pages and then ordered the albums directly from the artists. When they get here I'll play them non-stop until I know every note and word. Then, I'll put them away for awhile.

Is there a song you listen to over and over and over again?

    Arg!!

I have the opportunity to see Ruth Minikin at a house concert next week.

But damn it, I already have tickets to Shout out out out out for the same night.

Why must I be made to choose??

    That's IT....I'm moving....

Shout out out out out? You're so lucky!

I'm still deciding if I want to pay a 50% surcharge for Metric tix in June, I think I will NOT!

I will see ANVIL next Tuesday night, though.
