Live on CBC Radio 3: Go Outside and Play - Our Guide To Summer Festivals

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Apr 02, 2009

Coming up today on Grant Lawrence Live, 3PM ET / noon PT on CBC Radio 3's web radio:

Today's Guests: Sandra Butel (Regina Folk Fest), Amy-Lynn  Karchut (Dawson City Music Fest), Samir Baijal (Hillside Music Fest), Old Man Luedecke

Alright folks! It's time to grab your calendars, maps, Mixtape Podcasts, and musty tents because we're rolling out CBC Radio 3's annual Go Outside and Play Guide To Summer Festivals!

:: Regina Folk Fest, Aug 7 -9. Tune in today to hear festival director Sandra Butel announce the 40th anniversary line-up live: Iron and Wine, Bedouin Soundclash, Plants and Animals, K-OS and more!

:: Dawson City Music Fest, Dawson City YK, July 17 - 19. Tune in today to hear this summer's line-up when festival director Amy-Lynn announces the acts live on CBC Radio 3: Chad VanGaalen, the Acorn, Coeur de Pirate, Sunset Rubdown and more!

:: Hillside Music Fest, Guelph ON, July 24 -26. Tune in today to hear another partial leak when fest director Samir Baijal joins us. We can't find Sam but we still got the leak! Tokyo Police Club, Buffy Sainte Marie, Kae Sun and more!

Here's the rest of the best!

:: NxNE, Toronto ON, June 17 - 21. SxSW's Canadian cousin! Get set for Radio 3's annual all-star sweat-fest Saturday June 20 at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern.

:: Sled Island Music Fest, Calgary AB, June 25 - 28. The line-up for the downtown festival is officially announced on May 1, but we were able to squeeze these three confirmations from the good folks at Sled... Ladyhawk, Tricky Woo, Quintron and Miss Pussy Cat.

:: Winnipeg Folk Fest, July 9 - 12. The big daddy of all Canadian folk fests, this year featuring Neko Case, Patrick Watson, CR Avery, Great Lake Swimmers, Okkervil River and many others.

:: Evolve, Antigonish NS, July 17 - 19. Canada's greenest festival with that bridges rock with trance and DJ culture. Xavier Rudd, King Khan and BBQ, Mat the Alien, Sleepless Nights, Caledonia, and more.

:: Wolfe Island Music Fest, Kingston ON, Aug 7 - 9. Rock out in one of the most beautiful spots in Canada to the tunage of confirmed headliners Holy F*ck, Attack In Black, and the Rural Alberta Advantage. More to come!

and for those crossing the border...

:: Coachella, Palm Springs CA, April 17 - 19. So massive it's a bit gross. At least it's almost guaranteed to be sunny. Paul McCartney, MSTRKRFT, Public Enemy, K'Naan, The Cure, and more.

:: Sasquatch, The Gorge WA, May 23 - 25. Predictably great line, unpredictably bizarre weather. Kings of Leon, King Khan and the Shrines, Fleet Foxes, Nine Inch Nails, Japandroids and more.

:: All Points West, Jersey City NJ, July 31 - Aug 2. Let freedom rock at the base of the Statue of Liberty with the Beastie Boys, Tokyo Police Club, Arctic Monkeys, Crystal Castles and more.

And so this brings us to our...

Poll Question of the Day: WILL YOU BE ATTENDING ANY OF THE FESTIVALS WE'VE PICKED?

Yes or no?  Which festival will attract your hard-earned concert dollars? What is your favourite summer festival? Is there a festival or music event we haven't listed that we should know about? What band are you most looking forward to see under the sky?

Let us know by posting on our blog or email to feedback@cbcradio3.com and we'll discuss your comments throughout the show!

I was just thinking about Hillside today!
I'm a volunteer at Hillside, so I can't wait to hear a partial leak about the line-up!

So to answer your question, I will definitely be attending the Hillside Music Festival, as I hope many others do as well.

    Ottawa bluesfest

no mention of the Ottawa Bluesfest...more like Ottawa Music in general fest...but I regress. Most diverse lineup out of all the big festivals.
ANd no mention of pitchfork festival? Perhaps the best festival going in North America! Built to Spill, Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo, the National...need I say more.

    Summer fun

I'm thinking of hitting up Sasquatch as it's nice and close. Don't know how easy I'll get time off but I'd love to hit NxNE partially because I have a good friend in Toronto and I rather liked the city when I visited last October.

Dawson City is still one of my dream festival attendances. To do the huge road trip up there, the camping and everything. It'd be great and I'll make it happen someday.

Grant, got any idea if there might be another Stanley Park Singing Exhibition this year?

    YES

I've had my Regina Folk Fest tickets since December!

Coachella just looks sick.. I wish I could go.

Probably head to Calgary/Winnipeg sometime in the summer, depending on who's playing.

Don't forget Sappyfest in wonderful Sackville, NB!

...No lineup yet (as far as I know, that is), was that a pre-req for this list?

winnipeg folk fest is craaaazy good this year. I'm excited. I really really really want to drive to dawson city, and I'm seriously considering bumbershoot - I went 2 years ago and it was awesome.

South Country Fair in Ft. MacLeod, AB

I know its really small and doesn't really attract interprovince travellers, but the line up is fantastic and its really laid back. Very little rules since none are needed when everyone is just chilled out at a festival. Prior acts are Fred Eaglesmith, John Wort Hannam, Dave McCann, Steve Coffey, etc.

    DCMF

I'm so lucky to have one of the best fests in Canada so close to home. I'll be making the drive north from Whitehorse for Dawson once again this year and I'm lookin forward to it dearly. Weather should be good this year since we've had our quota of rain for the decade. Are the interviews going to be posted? I have to go to class and I'm going to miss them and I'd really like to hear who's on the line up.

    Sled Island!!!

I definitely will be attending Sled Island Festival this year. I was at couple of shows last year and they were awesome, especially the last show where Broken Social Scene was performing with a guy from Pavement. I checked their earlier today because I was getting excited for it. Can't wait until May 1 so I can see the whole list!

    Summer Festivals= my happy place!

Hi there, thanks so much for getting me to start on thinking about the summer festivals. I live in Kelowna right now and I'm super excited for the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues (I'm volunteering at this one though) and my favorite, I have been attending since I was 9 years old, the Edmonton Folk Fest!It will by far always be awesome. I discovered and finally had the chance to see many great artists there over the years including Danny Michel, Serena Ryder, Brett Denon, Martin Sexton, Hawksly Workman, all the Wianwrights... the list is just so long! I just love it. I missed it a few years ago when I was living in London, ENG, and thought I went to the Big Chill Festival over there, I still missed the Edmonton Folk Fest. And they just do a great job on logistic and artistic production of such a huge event.

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3: Go Outside and Play - Our Guide To Summer Festivals

The Virgin Fests are usually pretty good. I'm not sure about this year? And it's much too bad that Pemberton shut er down this year...

The Saskatoon Jazz Festival is also very fun, though not nearly as prolific as Montreal's, of course. Buddy Guy is headlining again!!!

    coachella...

...is wicked! unbelievable. i wish we had something similarly grandiose here. i mean, all point west is not that far and this year's osheaga seems not bad at all, except for coldplay maybe. i don't like them. anyhow...each year, i envy americans for their music festivals. but that's the only time i envy them...

    15

What about the CBC Radio3 Love Boat?

The only one close enough that I want to try and make it for the very first time is Hillside.

Otherwise I plan every year to be at LOLA, Home County Folk Festival and Sunfest at least a good chunk of those weekends here in London.

Three friends and I are piling into a van and heading up to the Dawson City Music Festival. It'll be many firsts for me - I've never been up north, never taken such an epic road trip, and never been so close to mountains!
  21. ottawateeth
    21

    @ Grant re: pitchfork

true...however, I'm sure there will a Canadian act or 2 (or 3, or more) will be added.
Nevertheless, it's still an impressive lineup so far...even Tortoise is playing. King Khan was one of the highlights of last years fest.

Lots of rumours are starting to float around concerning bluesfest...some are more appealing than others. Big ones that may be appealing to r3 listeners include arcade fire, and belle and sebastian.

    Fate

Fate has kept me from Hillside so far, every time it comes up I end up not being in town for one reason or another - we'll see what happens this year (fingers crossed).

NXNW I'll be in town for but will (hopfully) be working the Better Reasons Festival instead.

    Hillside & LOLA

I attended Hillside for the first time last year and I was blown away by the quality and variety of talent, as well as the progressiveness of the festival (local food, reusable dishes, free water, solar demos, green roof). Great workshops and art booths too, but I rarely tore myself away from the stages and the tunes!

I would also like to mention LOLA (London Ontario Live Arts) Festival. Phenomenal concerts in the park and local venues in town. Come check it out in September, it's mostly free too! http://www.lolafest.com/2008/

I'm so happy to see so many Hillsiders!! wohoo! It's going to be awesome...

I suspect your Mom, will get misty at the song "I have you" by Connie, if she plays it live. Its kind of of a quiet anthem for parents everywhere.

Not that I know anything about getting misty while listening to a song that embodies what being a parent is all about or anything… :)

Lucky you!! I have been so lucky to work up north every summer for the past 7 years... I have managed to attend DCMF most years as well (although I will miss it this year, I will be in Fairbanks). I promise you that the north will blow your mind and Dawson City will become one of your favorite places on earth. There really isn't another place like it in Canada (perhaps the world??).

Connie Kaldor is all about Saskatchewan (it's her home province) I spent most of my childhood being subjected to her music. I remember when my mom made the 3 hour drive to Regina to see Connie at the Regina Folk Fest when I was a kid. I even have a t-shirt from it.

    You should come...

  36. KidGotham
    36

    @MoniSki

The Burbon Tabernacle Chior ran really long and cut Islands headlining set to under 30 minutes. The crowd was upset, which is amazing, because it is hard to anger someone at Hillside.
The band was really irritated and were told they could not play later due to the complaints of the neighbors.
I also hope that does not happen again.

    Hillside!

Hillside is my favourite summer festival. I went last year and it was my favourite weekend of the summer... likely of the whole year! Amazing music, incredible food(Sausage Brothers anyone?), camping, free water.... I'm going agin this year and I can't wait! I hope someone comments with the leaked acts since I won't be able to listen.

I also love the Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia. I've gone twice. Little known fact: It predates Woodstock (started in 1961)

Yes, the free water is one of the best parts about Hillside... i'm not sure what the other festivals are like, so please correct me if i'm wrong, but is Hillside the only festival that offers free water to patrons, plus uses reuseable plates and cups, which then our lovely Dish Ninjas wash to use all over again!?!

Also, if you're planning on going to Hillside and want to save some money, apply to volunteer, you won't regret it. Trust me.
