Thanks For Your Help In Keeping CBC Radio 3 Alive

Posted by Steve Pratt on Mar 26, 2009

I know a great many of you have been following CBC’s financial difficulties closely and have been concerned about the effect on CBC Radio 3. Today, everyone at Radio 3 found out that, contrary to previous reports, we are NOT being sold and we are NOT being shut down.

However, like the rest of the company, we are undertaking a significant cut to our budget next year. There are two primary impacts for us, one of which will be felt strongly and the other of which many of you may not notice.

The first impact is that CBC Radio 3 will be recording significantly less live music in the coming year. Our recording budget is being merged with the recording budget of CBC Radio 2, which in turn has been reduced by 50%. We will still be recording musicians from across the country, but how much we can do and whether those recordings will be live concerts or studio sessions we don’t yet know.

I will be working with CBC Radio’s head of music, Mark Steinmetz, in the coming weeks to create a new live music strategy between Radio 2 and Radio 3. This is very painful – I know how much all of you appreciate our live recordings and I also know how much it means to the many amazing Canadian musicians we record every year.

The second impact is related to our radio stations. Many of you may not know this, but CBC Radio 3’s Sirius satellite radio station (channel 86) broadcasts a separate and often distinct set of programming from the streaming radio station on our website. Yes, some of our programs are simulcast on both, but many are not. Moving forward, we will have the exact same programming on both Sirius and web radio.

Very sadly for all of us here, this will very likely mean an impact on our staff. We won’t know what that impact will be until mid-May at the earliest, as it depends on a number of factors such as the internal take-up on a voluntary retirement incentive plan and discussions with our union colleagues about how to minimize staff reductions.

This is a bad day for CBC Radio 3. There is no doubt about it. However, it could have been much worse and for that I think we are all thankful. We are moving forward with a very strong radio station, a brand new version of the website coming within a couple months, and a powerful, passionate community of artists and music fans. Despite today’s bad news, I’m personally very confident that Radio 3 will continue to grow and prosper in the future and that impact of the cuts to our budget has been minimized at best as humanly possible.

I would personally like to thank each and every one of you who raised awareness online about the risks to Radio 3 since the infamous ‘unload Radio 3’ quote was seen in the media. Your support and the visibility of that support was heard loudly inside the company and I hope was a factor in making today’s news considerably less than it might have been otherwise.

Steve Pratt
Director, CBC Radio 3

Not ideal, but I guess you have to share the pain. Thanks for the good news. I'll pass it on.

    sigh of relief...

my comp. crashed about 3 weeks ago so although i had heard about the cbc budget cut i had no idea to what extent it would affect cbc radio 3. I am super relieved to hear that cbc radio is not being sold or shut down, it would be devastating if it ever came to that as i have grown very much attached to this station and absolutely appreciate all the hard work that goes in to producing these lovely broadcasts.

Thank you for this clear explaination

As I think we are more than simply listeners, but a community that has been on edge about the loss of the one thing that unites us.

As difficult as these changes will be, I think that the fact that they are as minimal as this is recognition that R3 is doing things right.

    Thank you R3!

I'm sad to hear that this is going to impact the staff. I was hoping it somehow wouldn't happen but I guess it's hard to be completely immune.
Radio 3 is an amazing team of talented people and you produce the best radio I've listened to. If this weren't true, I don't think there would have been such a rush to your defense.

Thanks for the straight answers now that you are allowed to give them. I'm so relieved we aren't losing you!

As you said, it could have been a lot worse. Hopefully in the future, Radio 3 will be able to reclaim what it's lost and even expand.

    Phew… I guess.

I wouldn't be so daft as to assume that Radio3 means more to me than anyone else, I know we fans, followers, hosts, artists, and of course you, Steve, all fee the same passion and love for this little niche of Canadian culture we rely on daily to fulfill that void that otherwise went unquenched.

I will be sad to see anyone go, or any reduction in your ability to do what you have done to this date, but the truth is, that you are still going, albeit under tighter constraints, is good news to me.

I had a terrible feeling that I was going to lose this home of my daily musical interaction altogether. I am glad that notion was wrong.

To the entire Radio3 staff, including those who may be no longer employed as the trickle down of this cutback takes shape, and those safe from it, AND including gone but very missed, Amanda Putz, you're time here in creating this place has been of more value than I can even begin to expound up for me, not to mention every other person out there who I know feels just the same as I.

What you've done here is restored the love of music, and people and being Canadian to someone who had learned to get complacent about it…

Thank you, and here's to times when the economy allows for growth and development, beyond your wildest ideas. And having everybody back together under the Radio3 roof again without the worries we've all had these last few weeks.

And thank you Steve for the transparency and care to share it all.

    A Fan for Life.
Susan, TB3 and generally the useless blog hijack comment leader, forever.

    Thank goodness

I am so glad to hear Radio 3 is sticking around. Between this and the change to Radio 2, I don't listen to any radio that isn't one of CBC's 3 stations. My music (and my life) have changed since I made the switch. I love knowing on Radio 3 its all Canadian. Long Live CBC!
On the other hand, I feel bad that you're losing staff and I hope this works out well for each and every one of them who are forced to leave!

Thanks for letting us know as soon as possible Steve, and I’d like to say a special thanks to Justin Beach for raising the alarm. I think you read the signs correctly and your speaking up about it when you did allowed a lot of people to quickly get involved and fight for Radio 3, and I don’t doubt that that was very important to how things worked out.

Thank you for the news. While I am worried about what the future cuts will be, and am sad to hear that a reduction in live recordings will certainly be amongst them, it is a relief to hear that Radio 3 will continue on.

Re: Thanks For Your Help In Keeping CBC Radio 3 Alive

I'm relieved that it's not super bad, but it's still worse than I think it should be. We should be stepping up as a country and supporting this endeavor(and all of CBC), not cutting back. We're going to spend billions on failed businesses to keep them afloat, but we can't spare 171 million on the Ceeb for quality Canadian content. Think of the stimulus R3 provides to the music community, sponsoring shows, giving airtime to unknown artists, letting people know about local shows, inspiring debate about all things musical...

I'm overjoyed that Radio 3 will continue to exist (and can't wait for the new website!), but very disappointed in our government for not stepping up to help such a key part of our Canadian identity.

Many of the conditions for the future sucks but it's a huge sigh of relief that CBC Radio 3 will continue to exist hopefully in the sense we grew up with. I've been a fan of CBC Radio 3 since spring of 2003 when it was exclusively the magazine and the site and CBC 3 has only gotten better!

    thank you!

It's really too bad that this setback is hitting everyone so hard, but recessions can't last forever, and public opinion is ever a fickle thing.

Thanks for consistently producing such an original and creative set of programming, and for spending time finding and talking and playing the true artists in this country.

Life with radio3 is a much happier place for me, and I am beyond relieved that it is here to stay. Stay strong, and keep the magic and the music going!

    Re. Tim Baker fashion

    Hi, Grant and Tim,
I have a Tim Baker fashion story :)
I know Tim from my work in East Coast venues.
I gave Tim a Boggle game for the tour this spring, and I had wrapped it in some argyle printed fabric. Well, I swear he liked the argyle more than the actual gift. He immediately folded it into a pocket square and wore it the rest of the show, showing it off proudly. Too funny. Cheers, Kim

    We win!

The way I see it, it's like a battle... Radio 3 is being bruised, but shiners are sexy. Way to win a battle for Canadian Independent music!!! Woo!

I know this appears as though I'm making light of this... I'm just trying to be optimistic. I am one of CBC's biggest fan (in all its shapes/forms) and feel the hundreds of job lost is a tremendous kick in the head... but Radio 3 survives, which I feel is SO important considering it does SO MUCH for so many struggling musicians, and so many times the younger generations' get the curb when it comes to shitty decisions needing to be made. So yes, WE WIN!

@BigRockFan - It's not me, it's everyone. I may have pushed a few buttons to get it started but if there'd been 1 signature on the petition instead of 1400 or 1 person in the Facebook thing instead of 2k + it wouldn't have gotten very far.

@TB3 - I miss Amanda on the air too, but under the circumstances I just hope that she's still working for the Ceeb when the dust settles. If she doesn't though she'll just have to take her place as the Queen of the Ottawa music scene and will probably make it the coolest spot in the country.

@Everyone - who signed the petition, joined the facebook thingy, wrote the CBC : YOU ALL ROCK!
Stay tuned, there's a next step I think.

Re: Thanks For Your Help In Keeping CBC Radio 3 Alive

Though I've been sporadically listening for year, it was always reassuring that Radio3 existed. It's like knowing Superman is taking care of Metropolis without actually needed to see him do it.

These cuts hurt a lot of people. Yet, Radio3 has always done more with less and I think that is a great attribute. Its fills an amazing niche in Canada and the world and does it well.

I remember speaking to Mr. Pratt years ago and I'm confident that in his hands, Radio3 will ride this out.

The CBC has always been a sort of vanguard for Canadian culture (whatever that may be). It is entrenched in who we are as a country. I hope the powers that be realize that CBC, specifically Radio3 can do more good in this world than any auto bailout.

In all, good to see Radio3 is here. I will always tune in.

i'm upset & worried about the changes
but i am more relieved than anything
i couldn't imagine cbc, or a world, without radio 3

won't it be a challenge to simulcast the stations? doesn't this mean radio 3 will no longer air international artists...ever? not that radio 3 hasn't dealt with challenges before. & with exceptional results.

i'm wondering about the new version of the site. change scares me. when the magazine was taken down i had to adjust at first. but then i realised the new site was incredible. so it'll probably be funk fresh.

Radio 3's evolution never ceases to impress me.

    CBC Radio...

...it is the best part of the CBC for me. CBC R3 has woven itself into the very fabric of Canadian musical culture...of course that needs to be cut back!? CBC Radio and CBCR3 in particular are the case in point for original Canadian content, reflective I think, of the mandate CBC operates under. CBC television on the other hand, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! How bankrupt(no pun intended) is that, as a last ditch effort to gain viewer ship numbers. Is there no spark of imagination left at CBC television. Isn't part of the budget overrun because those American programs couldn't pay for themselves!? CBC should have no advertising. Period. I think we could all scratch up a few extra dollars a year on our income tax to help make that happen. For those who are unable to contribute, drop me a line...I'll pitch in for you, even if it means getting a third job. There are models for publicly funded television we could follow or at least learn from. A few weeks ago I heard the folks who run the CBC say they will have to cut Canadian content and add more American programming due to the budget overrun, I became instantly nauseous...what vision and determination must have been mustered to arrive at a statement like that. The CEO's/board or directors should be fired. Seriously. The people at the highest levels of management should be ashamed of themselves for cuts they are making to CBC Radio.

CBCR3, I wish you the best of luck and continued success! Your very existence should set the standard for what I think the CBC in general should strive towards. We need more original programming from all regions of this country, not less.

I really hope everyone at CBCR3 gets to keep their job...you've all done outstanding work!

    All the best,
    Stephen Kent

    Long live CBC Radio 3!
Although I've been following Canadian music scene for only a year or so, it's amazing how much it's expanded my music taste and encouraged going to live shows and willingness to buy music instead of pirating. A connection to the artists in this country is what CBC R3 provides. I'm glad that the wonderful exposure that R3 provides for our talented Canadian artists will not stop. Thanks to those who have initiated petitions and groups and whatnot that I've signed and followed. Thanks to all of you for keeping us updated.

    Good news indeed!

I have to be honest, I haven't been listening to Radio 3 as much as I used to. But as soon as I heard about these cuts, I hoped to hell that it wouldn't affect R3. You provide such an invaluable service to so many listeners and musicians, it would be a huge shame to deprive future generations of R3.

    cuts suck

All these cuts at CBC really blows, but this is a reality for every media org out there. I read a news item that the CBC is looking to "sell assets" which the article did not detail. I'm really hoping the sale of "assets" does not affect the CBCs 45% [or is it 40?%] stake with Sirius radio....
  35. MackenzieC
    35

    THANKS!

I've only been listening regularly for about a year, but the fact that I frequently stumbled across the website since it's launch when looking for things is a testament to R3 and it's staff's committment to fulfilling such a niche in Canadian culture.

My stomach has been in knots since the cuts were announced yesterday, waiting to see the fate of our beloved R3. In the mean time I argued with every person I possibly could about the merits of the CBC and in particular R3 - I hope if anything, that my comments have brought more light to R3 and the fantastic work you guys do in promoting Canadian music! I've always been more attracted to Canadian music, (for no other reason than it's good) and R3 has only strengthened that love and like others before have said, expanded my tastes.

As a lot of people will argue that CBC Television needs more changes and work done to improve it, I believe more heads should be turning to look at the wonderful and inspiring work that R3 has done to embrace new media and examine new audiences and avenues.

Now if we could just get a 100% pure Canadian music station on the radio that was like R3 but also played mainstream music as well, I could die a happy woman!

Thanks again R3 for all your hard work! I genuinely hope the staff cuts aren't felt too deeply and I am sending a great big, warm e-hug to all of you whose contributions to R3 make all of us listeners' days a bit brighter everyday.

    I'm feeling for you.

This is both good news and bad news.
I for one am very glad that you are not being shut down.
Plus I don't think it's any big deal that the web and sirius will be a simulcast from now on.
As for the loss of some live music, I can live without it as long as you stay around.
There is so much live music on your concerts and sessions that I haven't yet listened to. That part of your website will keep me busy for years to come!

    Now the sad part:
I am so sorry that you have to cut staff. When anyone loses their job, especially in these hard economic times, it is truly a tragic situation.
Down here in the states I hear sad news about job loss every day, especially in South East Michigan. So I feel for you. The media is being hit hard and we are losing our local news paper this summer. I hate to think what will become of Journalism in the future.

Any way, Glad I won't have to live without you guys! It would have been a great big void in my life.

    Love,
    Dan Lee.

Radio 3 has an amazing staff with amazing talent. I have never experienced a radio station with so much talent. And I've listened to all kinds of radio, from comercial album rock, to NPR, to college radio.

I got sirius because I was sick of comercial radio and my favorite public radio has limited signals. And a big NPR station WDET in Detroit stopped playing music. They played a lot of indie music, but paled against Radio 3.

Never have I seen a station with a staff that can act, write great skits, and be so damn funny, as well as being great radio personalities and web designers and engineers and producers etc. as CBC radio 3!
Sorry if I forgot your position. I'm sure your mail room people and shipping staff and office staff are equally great!

    holding on

In the face of all the losses going on in the world, I'm personally grateful for the how the CBC cuts are being rolled out. The retention of regional stations and Radio 3 is a very important recognition of the value of this media organization to Canadians all over, diverse Canadians with sensibilities about well researched, well presented music and news and stories about our life in the broader world. I'm sorry for the loss that downsizing will bring, but instictually feeling all things will emerge with strength. I'll be listening.

Glad to hear the project continues, but I mainly have already written CBC R3 off when CBC did away with the weekend programming on CBC 2 destroying programs like Radio Sonic, Radio On, and Brave New Waves. One Great Radio Station

I can be a 'glass half empty' guy at times, so I was expecting the worst. I assumed some of the suits who make these decisions wouldn't see the value in Radio3. But for the most part, I was proven wrong. And for that I am glad. Time to look at the 'glass half full'. Heck, the glass is overflowing with passionate, talented R3 staff who play us the best of Canadian indie music.

Re: Thanks For Your Help In Keeping CBC Radio 3 Alive

I found Radio 3 late in 2008 and as a newer listener I have been amazed at the camaraderie and unity that makes this Canadian Indie music place a great place to visit. The hosts turned a visit into home for a Canadian living in the States who has always been a supporter of Indie Music. Viva R3!

@ Justin Beach You were the catalyst for the support. You motivated people to write the PM that never would have. You created NxEW to create a new interest in a new forum. YOU, Sir, deserve a big hand. There is more to be done, and we shall do it.

@ TheRadioHead You said we are a community. You are so correct and I'm glad to be part of it.

@ The HOSTS. You provide great radio, that's why we listen & interact.

@ The CBC...I hope someone sees what you have and what we have. It's Canadian, it's growing and it is successful. It's bloody amusing and entertaining, too. VIVA...!

    Radio3 programming

While I enjoy both, I very much hope that the Sirius broadcasts become more similar to the website's rather than the other way around. The Sirius broadcasting is rather repetitive while the website does a better job of representing Canadian independent music.

    Phew . . . Indeed!

I seriously can't imagine life without R3 (although R2 has certainly taken up the torch). The wealth and depth of Canadian musical talent needs you, as do us fans.
