SxSW Day Five: Sebastien Grainger Guitar Destroyed In End Of Show Mayhem

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Mar 21, 2009

The all too often seen band-versus-stage-manager-tension snapped like a tightly wound e-string last night, during the Sebastien Grainger and the Mountains show at South By Southwest.

Nearing the end of the Toronto band's set for the Saddle Creek Records showcase, the band was halfway through their song "Ways To Come Home" when a stage manager jumped on stage and insisted to drummer Leon Taheny that they stop their show immediately as they had gone overtime.

Leon stopped drumming midway through the song, leaving a bewildered Sebastien to spin around from his lead microphone wondering WTF. Unaware of the request by the stage manager, he then launched into the song "Niagara".

The stage manager then stormed the stage, shoving bassist Nick Sewell and grabbing the sticks right out of Taheny's hands. Sebastien then threw his still-plugged-in guitar at the stage manager, narrowly missing him, hitting the wall with a cacophonous crash.

A nose-to-nose face-off between the stage manager and the shirtless Grainger ensued, and somehow the guitar was then thrown into the crowd where it was smashed and totally destroyed. According to one witness "It was like a piece of meat being thrown to a pack of hungry wolves. The crowd was insane".

Sebastien and the stage manager were eventually separated and the showcase rolled forward.

According to Mountains keyboardist Andrew Scott, Sebastien Grainger bought a new guitar Saturday afternoon.

The way it probably should've gone down, if the Stage Manager had any sense, would have been to let them finish that song, tell Sebastien what was going on, and then let them play one more to play themselves out. Honestly, come on. You have to deal with people courteously, even if you're trying to shoo them out of the door.

Here are a few more random clippings:

“King Kahn and the Shrines are simply one of the best live bands around: a crazy Canadian soul singer backed by his all-German garage band. “I Want To Be A Girl” caused just about everyone in the club to break out in spontaneous dancing. In fact if King Kahn had waved his carved wooden staff at the audience and commended them to stand on their heads they probably would have attempted it.”

“Canadian rock goddess Melissa Auf der Maur proved the ultimate dessert. El Sol y La Luna was hosting the M for Montreal showcase, which showered concertgoers with the Canuck treat poutine, an artery-clogging amalgam of french fries, gravy, and cheese curds. There was nothing cheesy about Auf der Maur, though. As the former bassist for Hole and the Smashing Pumpkins, the fiery redhead knows her way around a heavy riff. Such pulsating ferocity is usually reserved for stadiums, but she treated the cozy club as if it were the Gorge in Washington. Swarthy tracks from her concept album, Out of Our Minds, melded with the bombast of her previous solo efforts, as she waxed on the spiritual world beyond our own.”

“With few exceptions, most musical acts ending in "Band" seem to veer toward the country category, so imagine my surprise when the Canadian men of the Sam Roberts Band took the stage Thursday night (3/19) for a fresh take on an old-school rock show.
Reminiscent of a young Bruce Springsteen in both sound and swagger, Roberts immediately took control of the stage, a spot the Montreal native is clearly comfortable with. The band cruised through tracks from the group's most recent release, "Love at the End of the World," including "Detroit '67," an anthemic number with addictive, layered hooks...”
