LB: The Craft Economy "This is the way art should work"

Today's guest: Andrew from The Craft Economy

I've been excited to see how many remix projects are happening right now (Valery Gore, Gentlemen Reg, Green Go) and the invitation from The Craft Economy to mess with their music also has me thinking about how art should work.

If you live in Toronto, you may have seen CDs from The Craft Economy stapled to telephone poles around town. Some of these also contained text written in protest of Bill C-61 where the band says, "Copyright should protect the rights of artists and producers of creative content, but it should not suppress creative and artistic expression."

The band has chosen to license their music using the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 2.5 license. The way I see it, this protects the music as intellectual property, but allows the general public to use / enjoy it in many ways, as long as the band gets credit for the work.

Doesn't that seem like a good way to do things?

Andrew Bray
, from The Craft Economy, is my guest today. Hear what he has to say about keeping your business straight when it comes to the music.

Any way that combats C-61, and/or the traditional 'to market' route that major labels would have you prescribe to, is absolutely fine by me!

    Good on you Craft Economy!

I'll assume they were wise enough to do this during the NxNE?

    new CDs

Andrew told me that they are hoping to get a few CDs out this year, quarterly even... with one of these new releases containing the remixes people are working on now. Looking forward to it!
