LB: Roadsworth Talks About Crossing The Line

Posted by Lauren Burrows on Mar 19, 2009

Today's guest: Roadsworth (aka Peter Gibson)

He was literally caught with paint on his hands, and was facing 80+ counts of public mischief when Roadsworth was arrested in Montreal back in 2004.

Perhaps the support would not have been so overwhelmingly positive if he was in a different city, but in Montreal people were signing petitions and writing letters to the mayor in support of this stencil-artist-turned-celebrity.

His story has been documented in a film called Roadworth: Crossing The Line, and the film is an official selection for the SXSW Film Festival, on now in Austin, Texas.

I caught up with Roadsworth in Montreal to see how this experience - facing criminal charges for your public art and becoming the subject of a feature-length documentary - has affected him.

In the show today, you'll also hear music from Miracle Fortress (who provided music for the Roadsworth doc), Arcade Fire (I thought "No Cars Go" would be a nice pick for today) and the show begins with The New Kings, out of Toronto, and a song from their album Take Back The Streets!

    Unsanctioned Public Interventions

    Pretty magical imagery, I think.

I also love seeing all the different things he has been called, graffiti artist isn't right, stencil artist sounds kind of silly... the trailer looks like the story of a public space enhancer superhero.

    Glad you like it!
