LB: (403) Represent!

Posted by Lauren Burrows on Mar 31, 2009
Alberta is split in half, partly by area code (403 vs. 780) and party by hockey allegence (Flames vs. Oilers). In the show today, we'll be sticking with the southern portion of the province, and playing songs from the (403).

To see what's cracking in Calgary and surrounding area, I always check out FFWD magazine and CJSW radio.

They tell me that the sixth annual Calgary International Spoken Word Festival is about to kick off, there's a new restaurant in Kensington serving sushi pizza, and Sled Island is back for 2009!

The Sled Island Music Festival is happening in Cowtown from June 24 - 27 and there is a pre-festival fundraiser happening Saturday, April 11 at the Royal Canadian Legion #1 (116 7 Avenue SE in Downtown Calgary).

Are you tuning in from Alberta? Does your number start with (403)? WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS?

    Red Deer Represent!

"Prior to 1997, the 403 area code encompassed the whole province of Alberta, the Yukon and the western half of the Northwest Territories, reaching more than one ninth of the circumference of the planet from the 49th Parallel to the North Pole. The territories were given their own separate area code, 867, in 1997. In 1999, the northern half of Alberta was split into the new area code 780."

    But not Red Deer!

    597

Recently, the CRTC began 10 digit dialing in Alberta, since the new area code (597, I believe) opened up.

Question: Do any of you think that Calgary has a vibrant music scene?
How does it compare to Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, or Halifax?
Being a musician in Calgary, I really want to know!

    Shows at Tubby Dog?

I gave Tubby Dog a shout out as good spot for grub, but I didn't realize they put on shows as well - that's awesome!
