Searchlight Profile: Phog Lounge

Posted by John Paolozzi on Feb 23, 2009
Over the next few days we will be profiling the Top Ten Searchlight Clubs. Don't forget to support your favourite neighbourhood live music venue!

VOTE NOW. VOTE OFTEN

Venue:
Phog Lounge

Location:
Windsor, ON

How Long has the Club Been Open:
We've been open just over 5 years.

Why It Should Win Searchlight:
We are THE anchor for culture, art, and MUSIC in this southernmost point in the country. If we aren't here, the fabric of cultural magnificence is hamstrung in a way we don't want to think about.

Five Of The Best Bands That Have Played Your Club:
Best bands? Julie Doiron & Company, Final Fantasy, Patrick Watson, Joel Plaskett, Holy Fuck...too many...

One Of The Most Memorable Moments:
Care Failure from Die Mannequin running into traffic while playing guitar wirelessly, stopping traffic in both lanes of traffic until settling on playing, on her knees ON THE HOOD OF A STRANGERS CAR that she stopped in traffic. There are photos of this!

A Little-Known Fact About Your Club:
Phog Lounge has a quote book behind the bar that we keep to copy down things we overhear. Usually it is absurd and crazy, but when we decide to look back and recite them, we get little drinking done as we are laughing ourselves silly.

Your Secret To Success:
Our secret to success is likely the same as the other 9 finalists: We love independent music, and we do everything we can to enrich the lives of the people in our city. We know we're a needle in the haystack, but we try to be the biggest, shiniest, and most sharp needle, sitting on the very TOP of the pile of hay.

What You Would Do To Celebrate If You Win:
If we won, we'd likely have to have a big event in our HUGE parking lot attached to our building. We'd need permission from the landlord, and the city, but we'd likely throw a massive outdoor party, with a big stage outside and the small stage inside...staggering performances inside and out. It would be a city-wide party, and everyone within 300 miles would know that they were invitied to see what Windsor has to offer to the cultural fabric of Canada.

Live Streaming Video at Phog Monday again...

Phog had a blast live-streaming on Saturday night with local bands Vultures! and Sledgehammer playing an art opening for local photographer Ron Marsden.

We will be streaming live the monthly installment of The Super Fun Film Society (8:30pm-10pm) AND our fabulous Open Mic hosted by Tara Watts (10:30pm-2am)!

Here's the link to our channel:
    http://www.ustream.tv/channel/live-at-phog-lounge

Super Fun is a group of Windsor filmmakers bringing in film shorts and shows to share with other film and TV makers in Windsor.

Tara Watts' Open Mic Surgery has been stacked with local favourites for weeks now, and if you tune in on an uneventful Monday night, you'll get to hear (and see) some Windsor talent in one of Canada's best live music venues. We want to welcome you into our space as best we can.

Also, if there are still any bar owners out there interested, we at Phog would love to be able to live-cast some of the events happening in YOUR spaces onto our big screen projection. We all have off-nights.
Maybe a regular thing on scheduled off-nights for us, where we could see (and hear) talent from around the country. You could share your venue's best with us. In the spirit of realizing talent we might not get a chance to see (unless touring), it'd be great to get your local talents in our building any way possible.

And vice versa will be offered to any venue owner willing to project Windsor/Canadian music into your space to share with customers from your city.

Hope to get some viewers tomorrow (Monday)!
Remember, musical stuff begins at 10:30pm.
    Thanks.

    You make it look easy!

Phog is a place where music, art and people come together. And I do mean come together.
A true meeting of the minds.
When you are here you can be yourself & hang with all the other selves.
Tom & Frank, you have woven together all the pieces that create a place that's great to be for all.
And like all champions you make it look easy. Good on you!

Great profile photo. I remember when Phog was the Eclectic but you guys have definitely taken it to another level. Keep up the good work Windsor needs you! I'm voting every day for PHOG and everyone else should be as well.

    phog.

I missed the Die Mannequin traffic moment...
But I was thinking of others, like when Patrick Watson and & pushed a guy in a Firebird out of the un-plowed ally... Or when, we played basket ball with Beast & YSPWSD in that same ally.
Phog is the best venue in Canada, for sure. ...and that ally has the most indie-cred in the country!

    i was there

when Care Failure played for the guys in the Neon on the Ave - just one of the high octane moments in a wonderful unexpected chain of improvizational life moments at Phog

and the photo shows it like it is - integrated encounters with music, art and street life - a funny little orange box of joy

    smesh, smesh!

look mom! i'm on cbc radio 3!

    cooooool...

that photo is from the Explode When They Bloom's CD Release Party at the kick off of PHAM Days (an annual month-long local film, arts and music showcase) at the Phog Lounge. Photo Credit: Eric Welton (a fantastic local musician, producer and phtotographer).

i am pretty biased because i've only been to 2 of the top ten venues... but a venue would have to do a lot to contend with the kind of experiences i've had at the phog.

i have seen countless shows featuring some of Canada's finest musicians in this building... always with 50 or less people who really have an appreciation for music. seeing acts like holyfuck, mother mother, ron leary, you say party! we say die! beast, a history of, johnny west, die badder meinhoff gruppe, dean's dragon, and so many more acts that come from across town, the province or the country to play here for us in such an intimate environment, it's always incredible.

as a musician and festival planner this place has given me more than anyone ever could. they hosted my first gigs, and helped me to promote a festival that wasn't even happening in their part of town. they were willing to give me a chance, not for the good of themselves, but for the good of our city's under-appreciated purveyors of culture and spirit.

as Sam Murdock of The Lesbovrouven and P572 records would say on the topic (and this is probably why he loves the phog so much):

    music over marketing
    content over profit
    ethic over strategy

all these reasons and more are why phog needs to win this thing.

I remember when the Avalon closed people were worried about where they were going to go to see bands play. I just thought there is always PHOG. Keep up the great work! Windsor loves and needs you!!!

Rock this thing guys! Can't wait for the parking lot party! Woot!

    PHOG deserves this!

There is NO other venue that delivers the music experience like Phog. It's about the music lovers and their venue. Go Phog!

    In a PHOG of LOVE

5 years + 2 passionate guys + 1 orange box + hundreds of Indie bands + countless loyal followers = CBC Radio 3's Best Live Music Club in Canada. Any other outcome wouldn't make any sense. It took only 5 years of hard work to make this tiny venue the centre of the Live Music universe in Windsor-Essex. It caters to the creative class like no one else can. That's why it deserves to win!

    Rolled in the alley

For a city that has been rolled in the alley for every last cent it has, Windsor still has a bit o' life left in it and the fans of Phog Lounge are proving that to the country!

When Tom states that this little club is a beacon of hope (I'm paraphrasing here, OK? cut me some slack!) he's not kidding. While the rest of the city is stewing in their juices, planning their exit strategy, the good folks inside this orange box on University Avenue are planning the new future of this city. It's a creative one. It's a fun one. It's one that I want to be a part of.

I also want to be a part of the big CBCRadio3 parking lot party too!

    this club must win

this club single-handedly put windsor on the indie scene map. the hard work and vision of saints frank and tom (owners) coupled with their genuine love of music has blessed this music -starved community. this club became an important axis, an apex, a cervical gateway to and from the west for bands either on their way west to chicago etc or on their way east to toronto, montreal... bands have played here that are in everyone's collective indie/college scene wet dreams. its a wild, cramped and cosy love shack of volume, and sweat culminating in a sweet, intimate musical climax.

Let's not forget Scout Niblett played Phog!

The back alley does have sick street cred! It's as full of memories as inside the joint. Good call Stephen!

Let's make the outdoor community party happen. Windsor deserves it!

    Word Count

I think Phog should win because:
    a) Phog is the epitome of a community meeting place, except that it also sells booze and showcases bands.

    b) Tom and Frank wrote amazing answers to the questions. If this were grade school and there was a rubric, those would be level 4 answers. Exceeding all expectations of this assignment. Stellar boys.

    c) If Phog wins, the win will mean more to Windsor than it could ever mean in any other city listed. We need this win for cultural survival. Windsor is dying and Phog is a facilitator to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.

    d) I will be really happy. Isn't that reason enough?
