    Phog Lounge in Windsor!

Here's the way I decyphered this contest...

This isn't a contest to see who has the biggest club or has the best sound system or has the coolest decor, it's a contest to see what clubs are bringing their communities the best in independent music, both nationally and locally, showing great diversity in its line-ups as well as providing atmosphere for both artist and patron.

We've played many of the "big" clubs in our travels and though I may be biased since it's in our home town, no one does hospitality like Tom & Frank at Phog Lounge in Windsor.

And capacity is roughly 70 people give or take, but that just adds to the intimacy of the show. And the patrons are genuine music fans who pay attention to each artist. I'd rather play to 70/70 genuine fans at Phog than 40/120 at one of the "bigger" clubs.

And come on, the list of band who have played there in the past few years? Tokyo Police Club, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Mother Mother, The Awkward Stage, Patrick Watson, Bend Sinister, Final Fantasy, The Pack AD, Cuff The Duke, Beast, Lindy, Young and Sexy, The Superfantastics - for such a "little" club it sure attracts some pretty big names.

It's also been a nurturing ground for many CBC Radio 3 artists such as Sunparlour Players, Ron Leary, The Golden Hands Before God and more!

    GO PHOG LOUNGE!

    Just my two cents,
Jamie Greer, The Golden Hands Before God

    Shock

I am just in shock that both the Ford Plant and the Blacksheep fell out. I would have thought their legendary status and huge social groups surrounding them would have ensured their continuation.

Blacksheep has a huge loyal following, and is a major milestone for Canadian artists -- once you've played there, consider yourself at the next stage.

The Ford Plant was the only not-for-profit diy venue that was ever eligible in this contest, and also has a die-hard crowd. I would have thought they'd be getting all the support of alternative venue space fans, and the diy die-hards.

    Ottawa

I go to Zaphods on a fairly frequent basis but I certainly think other venues in montreal or Toronto are surely more exciting.

While it's nice going to a venue where you're bound to run into friends and local bands mixing with the newest indie heroes, I don't know- in the last little bit something has been lacking. (or it could just be because I'm avoiding my ex-bf who'se a regular there.)

    Nice Contest

This contest is a complete farce, how can you allow more than one vote from one IP address and still be considered legit?

A bunch of computer nerds sitting at their computers all day should not be making the decision. I understand the concept of this style of voting and understand it makes supporters work as a team, also putting small venues in small markets at an obvious disadvantage off the bat.

Perhaps "Mystery Judges" attending the clubs could work better, than a system where people can sit at a computer for days on end. I am just trying to say by allowing multiple votes per person per day this contest is completely flawed, and the results are therefore null and void!

    For London…

    If you're voting by beer…
Then CTO should get the nod, as The Aeolian has a more limited selection comparing taps. And CTO is far more legendary in terms of the acts they've had there.

But, and this is a HUGE but, if you are voting on acoustics/sound, ambiance, and visibility, then hands down The Aeolian is your vote. A hall that can produce the sound that is "Ongiara" by Great Lake Swimmers, and provide the I am guessing about 300 people ALL the ability to both see and hear without straining and craning, the vote, not question goes to The Aeolian. And I'd put money that its got that on any of the remaining venues.

    And…
    @trepid
You couldn't have made a more truer statement. London has been really complacent about their own arts. But that two of the final ten are London venues, and that LOLA is two years strong, perhaps that can start to turn around?

Jill Barber is Sunday at The Aeolian. I think half the people there, might be my family, so I am doing my part!

hey bio spice - re: beers at amigo's

bio spice, the tried and true 'micro-brew' of amigo's would be be the boh-gin....drink the neck of your bottle of boh, add a shot of gin and mix it up and you are good to go...

they also have paddockwood a wonderful local brew that has taking a shining to the local indie scene by co-sponsoring a lot of shows with local promoters vive productions.

    london blows

I lived and went to school in London and can categorically say that the live music scene is brutal. I live in Toronto now and could name a dozen venues before London even shows up on the map. I grew up in Peterborough and even that was probably better than London for live music. I think this poll mostly just shows you have a lot of devoted CBC3 listeners in London. Good on them, but if I could make a suggestion, get the hell out of London and see some of the bands live!

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3: SEARCHLIGHT! The Top Ten Live Music Clubs Revealed!

The importance of community is the big finding to come out of this contest for me. I wasn’t really aware of the importance of the relationship between the clubs, bands and fans and I’ve learned a lot from the interviews and blog comments. Community, community, community. When I think about it this is one of the reasons why I've come to like folk festivals so much, and why I’ve soured on the snotty clubs full of posers, no matter how good the rest of the club may be. Many great things have been said about many clubs from coast to coast in this contest and I’m looking forward to checking out as many as possible when I’m in these cities.

As for my vote, it goes to Amigos!
  53. tb3
    53

    @stew72

My voting has firmly behind the Aeolian all along and I have made that known.

To suggest London blows, is a bit a "I don't like the results" bitter pill you're pitching.

I'll ask you to elaborate specifically which venue you are referring to, and which time frame was your schooling? Because I would bet money you've never been to the Aeolian Hall.

I'd also say that you probably have never regularly been to Call Thye Office to make such a statement. CTO, has been a venue of merit for longer than you've been a fan of music. Has ANY of the clubs in the Top Ten ever been able to say that Radiohead played there?

Next time you're in London, take a trip in daylight to CTO, and have a look at the 8x10's that adorn the walls. You'd be ready to eat your words, that Tony and CTO don't support the live music scene.

Sure this city has a lot to do in terms of getting behind its arts, but the two venues are on that list because they believe in something you never chose to open your eyes to in your time here. Stay in Toronto, and enjoy your venues a plenty. And voter apathy.

    Microbrew

    For your info...
Our microbrews comes from two places.
    Windsor (Walkerville Blonde) and Guelph.
The Guelph beer comes from Wellington Brewery (Arkell Best Bitter, Trailhead Lager, Imperial Stout, and rotating others) and F&M Brewery (Stonehammer Dark Ale and Stonehammer Pilsener).

We also carry Mill Street and some other various micros when we get the chance to drive to Toronto.

    ..

As interesting as it was to have three venues in the top 20 - Winnipeg was going to have a rough time staying competitive with multiple entries in the race. It was a great distinction for the Lo, Times and our room coming into the top 20, but a penalty at the same time. In spite of this outcome, I hope Winnipeg knows how lucky we are to have such fabulous diversity in our venues.

Anyhow, I can't comment on where The Albert's supporters will send their votes - and as much as I'd like to send some love out to the only remaining prairie venue - my personal support is going behind Tony and the gang at Call the Office. In 2006 I was tour managing a band at a nearby venue on the same night Tony had The Slits playing a show at CTO. I wished I was there instead.

Go CTO! I'm rallying the many ghosts that haunt the Albert in your name.

    Proportional Representation

I'm pulling for Amigo's, but Ontario venues sneaking in while Western venues split the vote seems undemocratic. Is it time for Spotlight to adopt the Single Transferable Vote system?

    Tenuous claim

I think this list's claim to Canada's Best is tenuous at best, when the Top 10 reflect such little choice across Canada. One bar West of Superior? Can that be?
I realise the 10 Best must leave a fair number of quality venues in the dust at some point--but where the moniker Best (a word whose value is deeply eroded in today's culture) is bandied about, perhaps the final list should have considered an entry from each province and territory, only then to be narrowed down to one. Because at the moment, it doesn't appear to be reflective of Canada. This reflects less a juried opinion, and more a "People's Choice" category--perhaps a juried examination of the top 20 would make this seem a bit more sincere and balance?
  75. greggreggreg
    75

    Black Sheep Paul

Well, I can't say i am too disappointed that the Black Sheep Inn didn't make the cut. Maybe doing a poll of musicians in Canada that have loved playing to a fantastic audience (in Wakefield), in a fantastic venue (Black Sheep Inn), and then being treated more poorly than any other venue in the country might be a good idea? Paul is notorious for treating talented and nice people horribly. I have heard countless stories, and witnessed such treatment. Maybe the venues that made the top 10 treat all musicians decently. Not just their favourites.

    Go Starlight!

Glad to see the Starlight make the final 10. What would Waterloo do without it and the Jane Bond which carried the live music torch before Starlight opened (I guess we could go to physics lectures)? I have seen many amazing shows there - Rheostatics, Sadies, Stars, Constantines, Ron Sexsmith, etc... and I think it is surely among the top clubs in this country. I have heard this sentiment echoed by a number of artists who have visited (unless they say that at all of the clubs). I do think that a number of the 'posters' are correct in bemoaning the absence of some great clubs. I think that the reason why the big cities aren't represented in the final 10 has to do with the fact that in smaller locations people have a greater sense of loyalty to their favourite club/bar (in TO for example there are several great venues). Also, it is a bit easier to mobilize and motivate voters. I am glad that CBC 3 did solicit opinions from performers as well. They are in a better position to comment on the relative quality of clubs since most of them travel across the country whereas we music fans tend to be familiar with only one or two venues. I wish we could hear from some more artists/bands.

The contest is a great idea nonetheless. Thanks CBC3! Starlight Rocks!

    No Lo = Recount....

I demand a recount! there is no way Lo should not be in the top 10!!!

Actually, to even have made the top 20 was pretty awesome, considering where Lo has come in just one short year! Going from the VLT-glory-hole (ooo can I say that on the Radio?!) to its present state has been nothing short of miraculous.

Wow, Top Ten. That feels really great, and if you know me, you know I'm not much on feeling. Thank you Sam for your endorsement, high priase from a man of your caliber. As for microbrews. We serve beer. No Molson products, despite their firm stance that we woul absolutely HAVE to sell Canadian. So, Labatt is our hometown brewery, regardless of who owns it now, we also serve Steamwhistle, Mill St. beers and a rotating roster of whatever strikes our fancy. Thank you, sincerely, to everyone who has cast a vote in our direction so far. Sure, we had Radiohead, but we also had The Smugglers and a contest winner made Grant kiss his ass. Literally.

No Peg City venues? Royal Albert? Non? There goes humble Winnipeg again, left in the cold (no pun intended). At least Amigo's is on the list... the staff there is very cool and constantly gets caught making out in various nooks and crannies. Good times.

    Edit
“Snotty clubs full of posers” sounded a little harsher than I was intending on radio. “Cold and impersonal” may have been a better choice of words.

That interview with Wayne Petti was a good example of the great interviews and comments that this contest has generated, btw. Did you hear him light up when he talked about Amigos and some of the other clubs he likes? I love that.

    People's Choice…

Wouldn't MAKING it so each province HAD an entry kind of smell like affirmative action?

This contest, as with the one last year is about the community a place builds around itself. London was out of Searchlight last year in a hurry. This year we're still kicking it.

In either case I am have been wholly behind the idea behind this contest both years because its intent stays true to form. And while many want to dissect the legitimacy of how or what the contest does, I ask how many that are unhappy with the results are so, because they forgot what this is all about?

You can't argue with the notion that a lot of people feel passionately about the things in their home town. Before last year I had no idea, nor desire to go to Prince George… or Saskatoon. But because of Searchlight, they've definitely landed on my radar.

There's no better way to do Searchlight. There is however a better way to lose gracefully, in the wake of your favourite hometown thing, getting left behind.

I love venues that refuse to sell the big name beers. Sleeman being an exception, but when a venue sells only local beers and stuff you wont see at the big venues, it's amazing. I love going to the Lo, getting a bottle of Half Pint's India Pale Ale (Try it out if you ever go to the Lo or to Winnipeg), then have an Imperial Pint of Fort Garry Dark.. mmmm, I'm in beer heaven when I go there!

    @Vector150 re. food at Blacksheep

to prevent spreading of misinformation to potential future Blacksheep patrons:

there is food at the Blacksheep!!!

there was a short period a year or so ago when the restaurant affiliated with the Inn closed down, and before another opened, there was no food cooked there, but the brilliant thing was that you could order food from two local restaurants, and they delivered it to your table at the Blacksheep. Tanya, the talented chef at Soupcon, cooked our food, then walked it down the street to us. And came back to get our dirty dishes. who knows, maybe there was a short period with no food before they go that sorted... but the fact that did get that sorted = community community community.

    Canada, Ottawa and Zaphod Beeblebrox

As the owner of Zaphod Beeblebrox in Ottawa, I have deliberately stayed off this forum. I have tremendous respect for all the owners, musicians, staff and supporters of live music venues across this great land. However, when I see people slag off clubs, owners and other bloggers, it makes me sad that what is supposed to be a celebration can be misconstrued. I want to go on record that Paul Symes and The Blacksheep Inn have my highest respect. As as far as why Zaphod's does "early" shows, this forum isn't the place to get into it, suffice it to say that many mnay bands and working people who need to report to the office the next day do appreciate our format. As well, we bridge the gap between live music lovers and dance music lovers and hopefully help each understand the other. I do wish all my fellow-owners/ publicans well. And by the way, if I hadn't been listening to Radio3 I would never kave known about Maybe Smith, which you played moments ago. So I wish everyone well and happy listening.

The Capital is a small room around 120 capacity, but we have a great staff and very supportive crowds and amazing artists 4-5 nights a week. @TB3

Perhaps my subject line was a little misleading. For that I apologize. I lived in London for 5 years in the 90s and quite enjoyed the city. I've also lived in Vancouver, Toronto and other cities - this is not a 'the world revolves around Toronto' comment as you are implying. I've been to CTO for countless shows, but you are correct that I don't recall the Aelioan Hall (although even that only proves I can't remember - common for me in that period).
My point is that London has a very mediocre (at best) live music scene, which begs the question why it has 2 in 10 entries from all of Canada? Why is Lee's Palace in TO not even on the list if we're going with the 'where that famous band first played' list. The Horseshoes is now out of the voting, but would trump most on that analysis, Massey Hall would be a mile out of its league as would the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. Hell, Stevie Ray Vaughan played the El Macombo and that place isn't even a great venue by local standards.
I probably take in 20 shows a year, something I could only do in a place with a wealth of great venues (currently looking at my tickets for The Constantines, Shout Out Out Out, Thievery Corp. and Eagles of Death Metal for the next little while). My comment, subject heading aside, is that I think there are obviously some radio3 fans who love those venues, which is great, but claiming London to have 2 of the best live music venues in Canada is ridiculous - those are just the 2 best in London. I suppose if I'd piped in earlier I'd have wanted the stipulation that if you're sitting eating chicken wings while you watch the band, its not a venue, its a restaurant with a band.

    Searchlight greatness

Maybe it's just me, but searchlight is making me start to feel that a giant cross-country road trip to visit all the places that get named would be pretty awesome. I'd never think there was so much going on in some of the smaller cities. I think I like this searchlight even better than the last, I can go to most cities in Canada and know where to get a drink and see good music. I know it sucks to see your favourite venue drop off the list, but there's no need to get so viralent about it.

It's not the 11 o'clock curfew that ticks me off...I actually do like that format (on weekday nights)...my only complaint is that when you go to see a show there, the headliner act normally doesn't get on stage until 10 or in some cases after 10... which only leaves them an hour (or less) to play. I realize that this is not always the case and sometimes 1 hour is good enough....but when it is the case and 1 hour (or 45 minutes) is not enough, it leaves me kinda ticked off.
    that's all.

    Oh well...

Speaking as one of the top 20 contenders from Winnipeg, I think things would have been different if there had only been two venues that made the cut from our fair city. But which two??? The choice between Times, The Royal Albert and my own room would have been a tough one in my humble opinion. And I must say, I feel pretty proud of the fact that we made it as far as we did in our first year of existence. a year and a half ago, this bar was a gang hangout with VLTS, prostitution, and drug deals going down in front of your eyes.

And of the 33 beers we serve here, more than a third of them are locally made, and only 3 are major label beers (although not the ones you would think - Standard, 50, and Extra Old Stock). Kudos to the other venues on this list who stock their shelves with locally made beers and microbrews.

Now that my own club is out of contention, I'll throw my weight behind Amigo's. It's my favorite place to play outside of Winnipeg - amazing staff, great food, and the times I've had there will be lost to me forever.

And if any of you live in Winnipeg, stop by tonight. We're going to have Happy Hour all night as a thank you to all of you for voting for us. And good luck to the remaining venues!

    Black Sheep Paul

Please let me clarify, my post had nothing to do with whether the Black Sheep Inn served food or not..I don't wish to come across as just slagging either. I do have an opinion about Paul and his treatment of musicians, and I wanted to share it here, maybe others will agree with me. Zaphod's close early, sure, but people that play there don't spread the word across Canada that they were treated like garbage. Ask around, this is maybe something musicians just discuss amongst themselves? People can discuss the treatment they have experienced at venues in Canada with owners and promoters here can't they? Whether you agree with the opinions or not. I love Wakefield, and the community of music lovers that live there.

    re: Zaphod's

So long as you know about the curfew going in, I don't find it to be a big deal. I actually find it really great that it's possible to catch headliners at two shows when Zaphod's has a show. I've been able to book it from Zaphod's to other venues in town for some pretty memorable show nights.

    no wing night at CTO

Stew 72 I completely agree with you regarding club vs. restaurant. As for it being ridiculous, it is being voted on by music fans and people who go to the shows, it really boils down to who can be bothered voting. I love the 'Shoe, as do countless others, but maybe they didn't bother voting. And yeah, London does "blow" sometimes, which is why I think there are a lot of people voting in London, because at least there are clubs where they can go see bands, where bands play, in what might be an otherwise torturously boring experience for them. As for a mediocre music scene, you've got tickets for The Constantines. Where was their first show? Call The Office. During the time that they lived here, like you, in London.
  115. tb3
    115

    @Stew72

In 90's London was absolutely NOT dead!

Do yourself a favour and go to the London Music Archives for the 90's at chrwradio.com… you'll see ALL the bands you are overlooking… Ghandarvas, Uisce Beatha, Julia Propellor, The New Grand, The Mad, Genocide… etc etc etc etc

The 90's was a real renaissance for the scene in London, mostly thanks to flannel, grunge and Canmeron Crowe's movie to celebrate it all.

At that time, between The Embassy, The Wick, CTO, and The Grad CLub/Spoke at UWO you could see some awesome acts 3 or 4 nights a week.

The late 90s and early 00's saw music die EVERYWHERE… not just London. Hell, I stopped caring at around that time.

This year's Polaris held two tired and true Londoners, and the winner had lineage to London too. The venues that are in this list, are kept alive and well by people that cut their teeth in the scene in London in the 90's.

That the two venues from London are there are only indicative of the FACT that people in London seem to care about their venues more than the ones that are not.

    The Fabulous Roadhouse

First, by way of correction, George's Fabulous Roadhouse is affiliated with Mount Allison University in Sackville, though it is completely representative of the community as a whole.

The bar staff come from town and the show booking duties are split between a student, a professor and a local guy who swears a lot (but is still endearing.)

The Roadhouse is without a doubt the best live music venue I have ever been in, here's why:

    1. Saloon-style bathroom doors
    2. Licensed porch
    3. Horseshoes in the backyard
    4. Frankly, the best sound in the Maritimes
    5. Constantines/Weakerthans - March 22
    6. Surly bar staff
    7. Two great music festivals
    8. The best bands in Canada
    9. Julie Doiron/Dick Morello/Fred Squire/Shotgun Jimmie/Paul Henderson

George's does not pretend. It asks you not to judge based on the quality of beer, the amount of working stalls or the number of broken chairs. It does everything important and it does them perfectly. Music and people. Without these two, nothing else matters. Micro-brews only seem important when trooper cover bands are playing. A Saturday night at the Roadhouse is not populated by indie kids, the legion crowd, or thirty-somethings trying to reconnect with youth. It is populated by friends.

By way of illustration, the populations of the cities with the 10 nominated finalists:

    Ottawa - 812,000
    London - 352,000
    Windsor - 216,000
    Saskatoon - 202,000
    Kingston - 117,000
    Waterloo - 97,000
    Fredericton - 50,500
    Charlottetown - 32,000

    Sackville - 5,411

In a contest where popular vote decides the winner, it seems to me that a town with only 5000 people wouldn't stand a chance. We don't even have a website, but we do have a lot of friends.

And really, that's what makes George's fabulous.

    Library Voices @ CBC HQ?

Say hi to our dear Ryan Drabble AKA nodice!
    We miss you Ryan!

I'm so proud to see Amigos in the top 10! I've always felt it's the heart of Saskatoon's music scene. When I lived in Toronto or the USA I was well aware of the specificity of my homesickness: I missed Amigos more than I did my own family!

Amigos is on the list because our music community is strong and supportive. Some might even say incestuous. Since playing out-of-province requires a minimum 7 hours of driving, we young (poor) musicians are deterred from frequent touring and often prefer to stay home and play for each other. As a result, Amigos plays host to countless community cuddle-piles throughout the year, and I think that is what generates the warmth out-of-town performers feel when they come to play for us.

I would like to directly thank Brant, the booking manager, for years of hospitality and outta-this-world generosity.

Okay let's lighten it up a little...

I'm curious about the lyrics for "Worried Head" by Valery Gore. In the chorus I hear "time to hit the stage" and then it sounds like she's scatting a drum solo Beetie Battie Booty-like. A response (not an attack)

Paul does have his own personality, but treats with respect musicians who do likewise. Sometimes people have inflated expectations.

Yes, there have been bands who, upon arrival, have asked how come the conditions of their rider* weren't fulfilled. THAT tends to cool down relations; or is it if Paul asks them if they got it back signed... while it's in his back pocket, not...

Most performers, I believe, ARE really well treated and FEEL that way.

I'm sure that opinion you've gathered is not wrong as to basis, but I don't believe its generalisation is correct.

If it were, you wouldn't have people such as ride at the top of his site (the side-scrolling list of performers) returning year after year, and in some cases two or three times a year.

*The rider (if there is one) specifies the band's requests: wine, red jelly beans, cocaine**, whatnot. Sheep site: http://www.theblacksheepinn.com/

Since Clark bought The Aeolian 5 years ago and Catherine and I signed on we've been working to show off the acoustics and the atmosphere that lives here. We always knew what it could be. It's great to have our audiences responding back.

I don't understand all the hate for Zaphod's, it's a great ol' club! Free showcase Mondays, live music nearly every day of the week, a really comfortable and laid-back atmosphere, Zaphod's does deserve to be in the top 10. When I’m up that’s when it hits me down

Pouring rain, I’m out on the sprouted grass
Moving tense and drenched like some animal
Born into this world with no camouflage
    So dance your bare bones

Cause when it’s time to take the stage
You better be ready to rage

    Without that beautifully worried head
There’d just be a bleeding neck
A boneless back, a creeping ghost and heart attack
    Without a worried head

Hand moves and card tricks and good reflex
Save me from the party’s domino effect
I’ll be in the next room practicing
    Glamorous routines

Cause when it’s time to take the stage
You better be ready to rage

Thanks! "You better be ready to rage" is the part I was talking about. I got an email from Valery a couple minutes ago with the same info. But now that you mention it valerygore.com DOES seem like a good resource for that kind of info, haha.

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3: SEARCHLIGHT! The Top Ten Live Music Clubs Revealed!

I love these contest, remindings me how little polls mean.
Really everyone who's bar didn't make it, don't get upset just sit back and realize there are not two bars in London better than all the bars in Western Canada, Toronto and Montreal combined.
After you've realized how ridiculous that is go out and enjoy your local music scene...

    Western aliens

With 6 out of 10, Ontario can continue to believe it's the centre of the universe as usual. Any wonder the West is getting fidgety?

    Well done, London!

I can't say how happy I am to see two venues from London! The music scene here was incredible back in the 90's and seemed to almost die around the year 2000. In the last couple of years though, it's grown like crazy. It seems like the more venues they shut down and tear down, the more innovative and dedicated our artistic community becomes, so it's not surprising that both of these venues made the top ten! Go London!

    The Capital!!

Wow I really didn't see the Capital being in the top ten. The Capital is an awesome bar, especially in the summer for their patio, but I wouldn't necessarily say it should be in the top ten. I'm sure people will curse at me for saying this, but its not that great of a venue to see music... unless you are going to a show with 50 people max (and thats pushing it). Anywho... good job fredericton!

    PHOG!

I can understand why you'd be upset if your favourite venue didn't make the topten, but you'll find zero haters at PHOG. If you haven't yet made the run to Canada's most southerly Best Live Music Club, take a run to Windsor when live music is on tap. This intimate venue is indeed among North America's best music clubs.

Canadian: They play hockey in the parking lot! PHOG

Community: Ask the bands where they feel appreciated the most... PHOG

Indie: Promoting Bands before they make it big... and celebrating with them afterwards! PHOG

The Arts: Music is just the beginning... All of the arts are celebrated and discussed at PHOG.

Proprietors: None are more passionate about sharing the best experience with patrons and artists alike. PhogTom is an incredible visionary!

    SURPRISED!

...at all the negativity here... some of it feels like it is directed at CBCR3 which doesn't make sense... if your beloved club didn't make the cut it's ONLY because no one took the time to REPRESENT!

    PHOG LOUNGE RULES.

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3: SEARCHLIGHT! The Top Ten Live Music Clubs Revealed!

I fully expected Ontario to dominate the list, but SIX out of the ten? And NOT ONE venue west of Saskatoon? Bizarre!

    Greatness!

I think that CBC is doing a great job of showing just how much support the smaller more intimate music venues get. I notice a lot of comments about "capacities" and "so many clubs from Ontario"...and I think that these people need to be reminded that music isn't about size...it isn't about any of that. A great live music venue is a venue that knows how to showcase the musical talent. Personally I must say that the Phog Lounge certainly blows the socks off of any competition I've seen. What a great intimate, convivial and just all around rockin' place to be lucky enough to catch some live music. Small live music venues are the green beach glass on a beach full of white, they are rare and as such, rarely given the credit they deserve!

    re:Posters at Starlight

This is a little note to stevek91 up above. Although, Spencer did do a few of the posters for the club most of them ( and all of the Cuff the Duke posters I think)
were done by me. No disrespect to Spencer who did a great job but I sweated for 4+years making posters for the starlight, a club I love ( I even helped build the office.) I did well over 600 posters for the club and am proud of each and everyone. That out of the way... I'm so happy Starlight has made it this far. A truly fantastic place run by truly fantastic people. The Starlight ( like a lot of the bars on the list) are less about business and more about the music and community. A great thing to celebrate. Way to go Josh and Bernard.

Yes! we are iniquitous and a big bad meany

We have a warning at the top of our website (stolen from Daniel Sylvestre/Exclaim!)that clearly reads:

    Synonyms for iniquitous:

bad, black, immoral, peccant, reprobate, sinful, vicious, wicked, wrong, corrupt, evil, nefarious.

    So you are quite correct.
But everybody knows that already, silly.

    Aeolian gets my vote

Clark Bryan has not only created a musical jewel in London, he has united many event promoters under one roof. He supportes local community projects and non profit organisations while getting little to no fundng help himself. I am one of those many loyal volunteers who enjoy "working" at the Aeolian because it is more than the best live club/venue, it is a magical place where entertainers all say they want to return to.

    Kingston's Grad Club!!

I first played the Grad Club as a Queen's undergrad over 20 years ago,in a raucous dance band...I've played many gigs there since then, with great local musos, including Harmer, both Barber's,L.Wright, and so many K-Town bands...BUT the main reason I'm pulling for the big beautiful house in a gorgeous part of Kingston, is the vibe I get watching, listening, and dancing to some of the best music Canada has ever produced! A big nod to Kingston musical History!

    Zaphod's, all the freakin' way!

Zaphod's does a real kickass job at bridging that gap between a live venue and club. I've seen a plethora of radical shows there. They might end earlier on than some other places but in my opinion it ends at the perfect time. Late enough to catch another far out show, but not too early to stay and dance to the awesome music they play after a show is finished!

    Black Sheep once again

I unintentionally stirred the pot with Paul Hynes! I like your venue Paul, and Wakefield. I am hoping this little public format call and response we're having may at the very least prompt some musicians, music fans, and journalists to start discussing their own experiences at the Black Sheep Inn. You can't treat people the way that you do and keep getting away with it, end of story. This has nothing to do with red jelly beans on the rider, or you having your own interesting and unique personality.

Sorry, I will refrain from beating this subject into the ground. All the best to the live venues in the top 10!
