CBC Radio 3's Top 103 Tracks of 2008!

Posted by John Paolozzi on Jan 03, 2009
Right up front, let me say that I was not party to the process by which this list was determined. However, I occasionally walked past the room where it was compiled, so I can tell you what I saw in there...

There were people shouting at each other; year-end statistics everywhere, the floor, desks, tape to the walls, and scribbled on a white board. There was a computer, which I assume was used to compile said stats, and there was also, if I am not mistaken, the bones of a rare snowy owl, which were used for some form of arcane divination.

Regardless, of the process by which this list was determined, we stand by it as a good and true. So here it is, 103 songs from the past year, all 100% Canadian!

We hope you'll look it over, and go "yeah... that's pretty much what I was thinking too!"

Drink deep my friends. Drink deep.

Re: CBC Radio 3 Top 103 Tracks of 2008

I really appreciate this list (and the hard work that went into it)! I was listening during the day, but had to run out the door as "Them Kids" was playing. Thanks!!

That's a hell of a top 10, but all 103 are #1's in my book. I would've been just as happy if the list was topped by Jill Barber, Ohbijou, Bend Sinister, or The Bicycles.

Spectacular list. I'm happy to see that Gonzales sneaked in there. That is one freakin' catchy song.

Great list, is there a podcast available?

    The Acorn?

    Great list!

What about the Acorn? Surprised not to see them here.

(halirob, Human Highway is #28. Deservedly so!)

That said, I have been hooked on NQ Arbuckle's 'Postcard from Princess' for a few weeks now...

[and to be picky, lots of random capitalizations in the list...]

    lots of random capitalizations

And dropped suffixes in the body of the post.

As John said, he was full of "cheer" that day.

    all the #1 songs?

Not to be greedy, but is the list of all of the #1 R3-30 songs up somewhere? I could check back to all of the podcasts, but, I'm lazy. :)

And I don't even care about the punctuation, capitalization or grammar.

    Thanks for the great show...

no more butt kissin' 'cause no Ghost Bees!

    Hey,
Last year all I did was kiss yer asses for this list and every thing else R3.

Well, no more mister nice guy this year!

This list is um.... pretty good.

BUT, you shoulda had Ghost Bees! I can think of a few bands I woulda dropped for Ghost Bees.

    So there!
    happy new year.

Re: CBC Radio 3 Top 103 Tracks of 2008

nomadgirl, you have me on the punctuation, and the capitalization, but you've got to at least give me props on the grammar. It's tight. Unless you want to be a stickler like Radiohead and nail me for those dropped suffixes. ;-)

Re the #1 R3-30 songs... the Best of the R330 podcast is out Monday. AND... I'll be building a playlist for the top 103 tracks.

danlee, yeah! Ghost Bees?! What gives? Those snowy owl bones must be acting up.

    Happy New Year! But....

I have to say that I'm really quite dissappointed with what's going on here. Every single time I try to add each song on this list to my playlist, it turns out it's already there! Oh wait...

    Yay Crown Royal!

Thanks so much for making 2008 an amazing year for Canadian Music.

(Jijou, tonight you and I disturb the streets of Red Deer...AND BEYOND!)

    Re: podcast...

I'm with teamquentin...well, I don't mean I'm on his team, because I'm not sure if I would consider joining a team named after one individual...kinda defeats the purpose, non? Unless he's simply a nice guy, which, being a radio3 listener, he probably is...But I was also wondering whether we would be seeing a podcast for the Top 103.

    AND!

I completely agree with halirob (ummm...Rob from Halifax?) regarding "The Sound" by Human Highway...after all the pleas for a repeat perfomance from this duo!
  19. bodhispapa
    19

    BUT!

...I am shakin' it to these superbulous tunes nonetheless!

    Good lord!

I take back the "The Sound" comments! What to my wondering ears should start playing...?
    A thousand pardons!

I find it a little funny that the 2008 Polaris Prize winners don't have a single song on this list.

Caribou's Andorra came out in 2007. I'm sure there was a song from it on last year's R3 list.

I heartily second that Ghost Bees comment. Also -- Charlotte Church. Other than that, highly enjoyable!
