Who is this Rich Terfry whom you speak of?

Posted by Chris Alscher on Sep 05, 2008

I was excited to see what CBC radio 2 had in store for me this September.  I heard a whole bunch of changes were going to come down, to a lot of people's chagrin. The big one came with Buck 65 (aka Rich Terfry) replacing Jurgen Gothe on the afternoon show. This was a surprise and to some an outrage.

This is not to say that Buck 65 is some wetback, cold in the toes rookie radio guy.  He had a show originally called "The Bassment" on CKDU in Halifax for years. And the man is a poet. Words drip off the man's lips like a waterfall. I have been listening to him, and the best part of the show, I think, is the host breaks.

This is my problem.  Can anybody make a living strictly as a musician anymore?

What is wrong with this world when the great Buck 65 has to go back to "REAL" work and get a day job.  He's not even going by Buck 65 anymore.

Scandalous!!

Is there any hope for any of us anymore? Are we forever doomed to our jobs as clerks and number punchers only to have music as a "Hobby" thing??

    meh

how many rich artists do you know compared to businessmen? art has never been a money maker and when it has there's always some element of whore-ish-ness accompanying it. at least 65 will be able to pay the bills with a job that seems like it would be goodtimes and still in music. who knows. i might just be bitter b/c i chose to go to dal instead of nascad thinking a science degree would land me the pay dirt. im still broke as hell any the few things i can afford to enjoy tend to be the arts. its all relative.

Sometimes you give up what you love . . .

See, I think not being able to make a living at it easily (depending how easy you give up your ideals that is) is a trade of for doing what you love. It's great if you can make it your career, more power to you, but I can see how fitting around what you do to pay the bills doesn't seem that bad. Hell, if I could get good enough to do that I still would. Quiting my job to go tour with a band would be a dream, even if I couldn't do it forever.

Still, Buck 65 doing music radio isn't that bad, it's not like he's testing and writing code or working construction instead.

hm, I think sometimes you just don't feel like doing the same things anymore. I don't think artists ever give up. I think it might feel really nice to just do something else for awhile. It's an enormous amount of work ...maybe it's a sign of personal growth.
