Live on CBC Radio 3: Hockey Night In(die) Canada!

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Sep 03, 2008

Coming up today on Grant Lawrence Live, 3PM ET / noon PT on CBC Radio 3's web radio:

Today's Guests: Stephen Boyd (CBC Sports), Matthew Barber, Vancougar, In-Flight Safety

It's kinda like holding a contest to repaint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel... a near impossible task. How can you improve upon or replace perfection? That is exactly what thousands of Canadian musicians are trying to do to replace the legendary Hockey Night In Canada Theme in time for the drop of the puck in October.

Over here at CBC Radio 3, we've sifted through thousands of entries and found six themes by six independent Canadian artists that we want you to rate for us on our blog. Will any of these five be in contention for the title?

:: Windom Earle "Get On Into It" (Halifax)

:: Eden Fineday (Vancougar) "The Speed of Sound v.2" (Vancouver)

:: Matthew Barber "Double Overtime" (Toronto)

:: Grant Johnson "Flight Of The Zamboni" (Winnipeg)

:: John Mullane (In-Flight Safety) "Battle For Middle Ice" (Halifax)

:: Carolyn Mark "Dirty Little Secret" (Victoria)

This brings us to our...

Poll Question of the day:

WHICH DO YOU THINK HAS THE BEST CHANCE TO BECOME THE NEW HNIC ANTHEM?

Did we miss any of your favourites? Post the links! Are you going to vote? What should the new theme sound like? Do you care?

    Hockey Theme

Out of those picks, I definitely like Get On Into It by Windom Earle the best. It's so upbeat from the very beginning, it could definitely get the country pumped for hockey. Plus, I love the Twin Peaks reference. BEST.SHOW.EVER. I'm actually watching it on DVD right now for the 2nd time...It's hard to believe that something so bad can be so good :)

Hmmm… after listening to each all the way through, I have to be honest and say, I don't think any will get though. They just don't sound new, or fresh enough.

Where are the Holy F*ck, the Woodhands, or the Hanson Brother entries galldarnit?

well, unrelated to hockey themes but I wasn't around yesterday so... Hooray! Grant's back!

I think that there are some excellent entries here, but my vote would be for Matthew Barber's Double Overtime. It is so catchy that it *almost* makes me care about hockey...

    tom?

Of these, only "Flight of the Zamboni" is a contender.

But as we all know the only replacement that everyone could live with, if not whole-heartedly embrace, is the Hockey Song by Stompin' Tom.

Nothing good can come of this contest. On-line contests result in Rory Fitzpatrick.

    I gotta agree with tb3...

I don't really dig anything I've heard so far. It's all about the melody, and no one has captured the excitement in melodic form quite yet! yah yah, I should have entered my own and not just judged everyone else's, but I didn't and I feel a fool. But still, I'm a little scared for the future of HNIC :O/

    Guthrie...

I'm a big fan of Jim Guthrie's submission. Of course, I'm a big fan of Guthrie, so it's a subjective opinion.

    Dear Grant:

I have 3 songs entered in the Challenge. Here's the link to Red Line Rock / Rock de la ligne rouge:

    HNIC

I have a feeling that CBC isn't going to take the polling results too seriously, at least, I hope not. I think they just wanted to get everyone behind the new anthem and to feel like a part of the process. They know people are less than happy over losing that theme, but the best we can do is try to make CTV pay for taking it.

Still listening to the submissions so I got nothign to say on them yet

I don't really have a favorite yet, but I also was going to throw in Jim Guthrie's

grand sorry for being so mean, but I just don't think that that song would fit with hockey. We need something that grab you and picks you off the couch and puts a smile on your face on a -40 degree day in Manitoba.

Anyway, pjrocksmb stands for Pearl Jam Rocks- I added the mb for manitoba b/c for email purposes the pjrocks was already taken

i urge folks to see Pearl Jam next year on there next tour and for now go and see NEIL YOUNG FOR GOD SAKES

    Get On Into It

I think Get On Into It has the most potential out of the ones up there, get the blood pumping a little more than the rest. Still, Flight of the Zamboni is awesome just not sure it'd fit for the theme.

Not that I think the original theme is the end all best theme they could have, it's just hard to think of something to replace a song you grew up hearing to mean "Hockey's starting!"

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3: Hockey Night In(die) Canada!

I really like the Carolyn Mark song, but I think it is too happy to be the anthem. It's sad that whatever is chosen will probably sound more like Nickleback or some generic hard-rock band.

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3: Hockey Night In(die) Canada!

Thanks for getting Stephen Boyd on, I wasn't really clear on the process that was going to happen. I guess I meant they aren't going to take the rating people are doing now seriously which it sounds like they aren't. I think they're going about narrowing down the results in a good way, trying to cut out what people are saying for now and just thinking directly if they think it'll work.

Cutting down to 5 though. I do not envy the people in charge of that.

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3: Hockey Night In(die) Canada!

Totally agreed. If it turns out to be Nickleback, I will cry.
I am really worried that the anthem chosen will resemble the Monday Night Football one. A song that is all about testostorone, eating ribs and being a prototypical Bud/Molson loving stooge.
I am concerned that it will look and sound too much like a beer comercial.

the windom earle ditty is pretty good.

apparently, former maple leaf gardens organist ralph fraser has entered a song in the HNIC contest. can't find it . . . would you be able to play it? (if you can find it?)

    Nickleback

Wow. There is some serious Nickleback hate out there. The way I see it, you can't deny their ability to reach out to a Huge fan base and write songs people can't help but sing along to. Is that so bad? I wouldn't mind hearing what they would come up with for a Hockey Theme song. They grew up with Hockey Night in Canada too, remember? I'm not the biggest fan, but isn't that why we all listen to Radio 3 instead of the local Rock station?

How about Lynn Miles' song "It's Hockey Night in Canada"? Not very peppy...kind of depressing, actually. Ok, probably a bad idea. But I love her and that song.

    Go Bolts!

It would be really bad form for the theme song to Hockey Night in Canada to have ANYTHING to do with the Tampa Bay Lightning. That's just wrong on so many levels. But, go Bolts!

    Have to show love to...

The Tragically Hip (x2). What about The Lonely End of the Rink? The opening guitar, drums and bass. Couple of cool stills and legendary slap shots? Or Heaven is a Better Place Today. I know it was used once already (as a tribute to Dan Snyder), but still would be cool.

Sorry, no Nickelback please. If your gonna go that route, why not have Bryan Adams do Summer of '69 or Cuts Like a Knife?

Caveat: I'm at work and cannot listen to the songs Grant posted online.

    dbl OT, not a shootout

    @ tb3

I chatted with Tom Holliston of Hanson Brothers and he said he wouldn't submit a tune because he isn't happy with where Hockey Night in Canada the program is at this time and professional hockey in general. Maybe if a punk hockey league needs a theme you'll hear a Hanson Brother tune there.
Also check out Tom Holliston and Dave Lang touring at the moment. They are coming to Salt Spring Island where I am this friday.

This is a Windsor musician's entry. His name is Adam Fox, he's a staple in the local music scene (for a million reasons) and it is the best indie entry I've heard so far.
