Live on CBC Radio 3: All Request Monday Madness for Sept. 15th

Posted by Chris Kelly on Sep 15, 2008
Coming up today on Grant Lawrence Live, 3PM ET / noon PT on CBC Radio 3's web radio:

Today's guests: The Organ

Haven't heard an artist in ages? Love that band but never hear them? Wanna show the world what band you think is best? Then this is the show for you... the All Request Monday Madness is back... and you have three ways to get in your requests:

:: post them on our blog

:: email feedback@cbcradio3.com

:: call in and belt it out to 1-877-955-6565 ex. 2

Also on the show, Katie Sketch from Vancouver's recently resurrected, all-girl group The Organ. She'll be on to tell us the status of the band and debut a track from their new EP, Thieves.

And... it's time to ask one of our favourite reoccurring poll questions, which gives you the power to program Radio 3 in the future, which brings us to our...

Poll Question of the Day: WHICH BAND OR ARIST SHOULD RADIO 3 BE PLAYING THAT WE AREN'T?

Last time we discovered such great bands as The Great Bloomers, Spymachine 16 and Will Currie and the Country French. Let us know by commenting on our blog and taking part in our on-line poll and we'll share the results throughout the show.

    Living Room

    Hi Grant!
I would love it if you could play Living Room by Tegan and Sara. They're not new to CBC by any means, but with The Con getting a little aged in the cellar maybe they're not enjoying as much airplay lately as they have had in a while. Thanks!

    Re:Quest

You know what I haven't heard in a while that I'd love to? "All that I know" by The Marble Index.

That's just the kind of song this Monday needs! Give Monday a kick in its pants I say.

As for bands you don't know… hmm Golden Hands Before God. The only reason I say this is A Man Duh Putz played them this A.M. and that was the first I heard them on here. But I've been hearing about them for years from my sis-in-law who's been pimping them to me - they're friends I guess from her Windsor/CJAM/Press Club days.

    The Perpetrators: http://radio3.cbc.ca/bands/The-Perpetrators

They just had a bit of a messy breakup last week, their drummer left the band last week to persue his other side projects (American Flamewhip being one of them)

    My request!

Hey Grant! (By the way, how's Lana doing?)

The Canadian Beatles, aka, Sloan, are starting their tour, both heading west from Toronto, as well as down the US west coast this month. They'll be in San Francisco on September 30. How about play the one song that so appropriate for us here in northern California, Sloan's "Losing California" from the Between the Bridges CD?

    Thanks!

I'm just in a hometown kinda mood today, had such a blast a You Say Party! We Say Die! on the weekend
    Thanks Grant.

    Saint Alvia

    Hey Grant,

I was at the Saint Alvia/Against Me! show Friday, and I heard some stuff off Saint Alvia's new album. Could you play one of the new tracks? I don't know if Radio 3 has started playing their new songs yet, but I haven't heard them on the web yet.

Um, I hear these guys are great...

Yah, you should definately play a track by the Savannah Leigh Band. Those Guys Rock. (Is shameless self promotion frowned upon? Someone's gotta do it I guess ;O)

Ok, but besides me, I will second the Language Arts shout out, and add to that a NMC Band - Kent McAlister and the Iron Choir - request. They're what I like to call "Authentic" roots country. And should get a spin.

    Thanks!

    My Request

A request for you from the vtr library in the basement of the CBC Toronto building. I'd love to hear Hit the Road by the Speaking Tongues while I sit here and recycle tape.

Another band I haven't heard you play before but who you should: The Gravity Wave. Check out Buffalo Jump.

    Thanks,

    i should be in A&R

I love the thrill of discovering a band or artist before anyone else has heard of them.

Anyway, i saw this band PUBLIC (from Toronto) perform recently and got all excited. Would love to hear them played on here.

Googling them is a challenge (Public Libraries across canada are the first hits!) so here is their f*c*book profile & the other one:

    http://www.facebook.com/pages/Public/7368474115

    http://www.myspace.com/public

All the songs are catchy, but I like Walk Away, Get Back, Now & Again.

Plus, if i may be so bold, I think the lead singer kinda looks like Chris Murphy from Sloan! except cuter :P)

    A few I haven't heard yet on Radio3

Here's a few artists I haven't heard yet on Radio 3 that I think really deserve a listen:

My People Sleeping - Montreal - gorgeous multipart pop harmonies

Rockenspiel - Peterborough - gang vocals, rockin' glock, and multi-instrumental backing

The Music Box - Waterloo - organ based punktry sound, howling stories of longing and injustice

    Monday bloody Monday

    Grant,

I saw The TVees at the Railway Club on Friday night and I was super impressed, anyway (She's) A Hurricane was a stand out number.

Also, Double Happiness is starting to play a lot of shows around Vancouver lately... they have a rad song called Velvet Room.

    Your show is tight.

Some other NMC that seem to be possing below the radar

As with my past post, all bands that are on NMC, but haven't popped up on Radio3, at least much, to my recollection anyhow:

Milwaukee's Best Band - Montreal - all star party band, past and present members of bands like The Acorn, Silent Film Soundtrack, Archipelagos, Mixylodian

Archipelagos - Montreal - formerly Dukes of the Archipelagos, so they may have fallen out of recollection due to their name change, but absolutely epic collisions of shouts and pleas

Lake of Stew - Montreal - part of the citygrass surge coming out of that part of the country, and one of the most fun live bands in the country, with some of the most deliciously absurd lyrics

  23. trepid
    23

Another few that we should be hearing from

    Also from NMC:

Trike - Vancouver - currently on a European tour, these new-wave oddballs recently won a local version of the gong show, and have a band day-job of busking to support themselves, which has honed their bizarre performances to a sharp point - they're a two piece with a tap dancing violinist rhythm section

The Kettle Black - Vancouver - one man combat boot wearing, kick drum stomping, 70s effect stack looping, lightshow toting flurry of motion and technical bass chops

    you should be playing...

Just back from Sweden (she was studying sustainability) my friend Sarah is back in BC - I went to her CD release party last year and it was great. She is composing another CD soon although I don't think she got the recognition for the 2007 indie release (I'll send you a copy!). Check out 2 new songs (Blue River Eyes and Linda) and 2 from the 2007 release at myspace/sarahcheevers...

    Please play........

I don't think you have em in your archive, but if you don't, you should source out some Stride Elementary out of Vancouver.

What I was going to say was, wasn't self-proclaimed pelt, aka your chest beard, enough for your girlfriend?

And yes, Spark might be about technology but R3 was WAY ahead of them in terms of tech-savvy. They don't have a Scott Muc, last time I checked!
  29. WildWorks
    29

Who should be played on R3 in the future

It would be interesting to hear Zaki Ibrahim and Masia One in the future.

As for Ottawa artists, I guess Kyrie Kristmanson, Jetplanes of Abraham, The Balconies, and Videotape.

I'll take any Great Lake Swimmers you can play. It ain't like I can hear them on the radio down here in Gatorland.

    Midway State and SoCalled

We definitely need to hear more SoCalled, the best and most original fusion artist out there (bringing together Klezmer, hip hop, electronic and funk) - especially his new work with funk legend Fred Wesley.

Also, the Midway State from north of Toronto are incredible! I've been listening to their album Holes pretty much nonstop for the last month. Really catchy and really well done.

    32

    what you should play...

You guys don't really play any "loud stuff". London, Ontario's Shotgun Rules are one of the hardest working indie bands around...touring, putting out discs, etc. You should play them.
Also, I saw a show the other night with Cursed Arrows from Ontario, they are good, play them. They played with Kestrels, a hot new band outta Halifax/Truro, give them a shot! They are putting out a 7" on white vinyl! Whoa!
  33. trepid
    33

    @flannel tom

Cursed Arrows are from Guelph, and consist of an absolutely adorable husband-wife team up of Ryan Stanley, formerly of The Vermicious Knid, and Jackie Stanley, and I do concur that they should absolutely be played!
  34. flannel tom
    34

    Another cool band...

I See Rowboats from Halifax are quite a spiffy little outfit, you should try them on for size.

I was so excited to see that one of my favorite Victoria bands- Meatdraw were on here, Though I never hear them. I would love if you could play anything from Meatdraw as I am not in Victoria right now and it would really make my day.

    New Vancouver talent...

I tend to focus more on Eastern Canada's music scene, but I recently saw Adaline, from Vancouver, in concert and was amazed at how such a sweet girl can have such a powerful voice. I would love to hear anything by her that you have!

You probably have way more requests than you can get to by now, but if you can fit it in, I'd love to hear:

    Just one more comment

BA Johnston!!! I mean really, he's got a new album out entitled "Stairway to Hamilton", he has criss crossed Canada 1,000,000 times and despite his own claim of being "a fat and tired chud", I think he just might be the most active fat and tired chud on the Canadian music scene.
I don't think I have ever once heard CBC R3 play BA and by golly, that is a shame.

    CBC needs some Hummingbirds

Hello CBC, how bout some rockin' twang from the boys of Born Ruffians? My girlfriend Monica and I saw them twice this summer and they blew our socks off.

I like to request Hummingbird to her because whenever she hears it she looks like she could fly just like the fluttery, syrup-hungry bird that the song is named after.

    The Perpetrators - Drummer rumors

The Perpetrators let Chris go, he didn't quit. And it wasn't messy as Silvorgold suggested.

The Perps are not breaking up. The are rejoining with Scotty Hills, their former drummer who played on their JUNO nominated and WCMA winning album, THE GAS AND THE CLUTCH.
