Canadians Take Spin's Top Video Honours

Posted by Jennifer Van Evra on Dec 24, 2008

Canadian acts have taken the top two spots on Spin magazine's 11 Best Spin.com Videos of 2008 list.

At #2 is Tegan Quin of Tegan and Sara, who Spin invited to New York to play an online book club-related event. "Sharing the stage with Running With Scissors author Augusten Burroughs," says the magazine website, "Tegan performed her song, written for Burroughs' A Wolf at the Table audiobook, for the first time ever. After a few nervous false starts, she uncorks a classic, and one of our favorite moments of the year."

At #1 comes a stripped down, outdoor acoustic duet from a group that is better known for its full-throttle rock - Metric. Here's how Spin described its top choice:
"Our favorite video of the year was also our most viewed, probably because it was a world premiere and, simply, awesome. When Metric arrived at our house that day, they had only partially completed sessions for their fourth album, which is still untitled and due for release sometime in 2009. We asked really, really nicely if they'd perform a song for us, and, to our utter shock, they opted to play a somewhat unfinished, never-before-heard song from the new album.

"Frontwoman Emily Haines and guitarist Jimmy Shaw spent nearly an hour roaming our backyard, rehearsing and arranging on the spot, and when they finally let us roll the cameras, we captured this delicate, stirring slow dance. While we can't wait to hear the finished (undoubtedly louder) final version, "Give Me Sympathy," as performed that day, has been keeping both SPIN.com and Metric fans around the world satiated until that new record meets our eager palms."
