Joey Keithley In The Running For "Most Influential Person In BC History"

Posted by Jennifer Van Evra on Nov 26, 2008
Is Joey "Shithead" Keithley, lead man for the legendary punk band D.O.A., the most influential person in B.C. history?

More powerful than Steve Nash, sexier than Pamela Anderson, smarter than David Suzuki?

Well, it depends how many people vote.

The Vancouver Sun is taking a page from the CBC's The Greatest Canadian competition and trying to determine "British Columbia's Best" - and Keithley has made the short list.

Other B.C. heavyweights include legendary cross-country cancer fundraiser Terry Fox, explorer Simon Fraser, actor Michael J. Fox, architect Arthur Erickson, pot crusader Marc Emery and Olympic snowboarder Ross Rebagliati.

Felllow musicians on the list include Joni Mitchell, Bryan Adams, Randy Bachman, David Foster, Nelly Furtado and Michael Buble.

Want to send Keithley to the top? Voters can make their mark until Dec. 22 here. The winner will be revealed Dec. 31.

And while you're voting, have a listen to the story of another contender, Gassy Jack - in a song by Nardwuar's band the Evaporators:

He definitely deserves to be on the list, but I don't think I'd call him the MOST influential person in BC history. How does Joni Mitchell qualify as a British Colombian, btw?

    Joni Mitchell

She lives on the Sunshine coast permanently now and is an activism for local issues there

Thanks! That's news to me. I thought she still lived in California. She'll always be a Saskatchewanian, of course, but we don't mind sharing her with BC. ;-)

    E.J. Hughes

The Evaporators also wrote a song about the recently deceased painter EJ Hughes, who is in the running as well.

    Tommy Douglas yo.

Terry Fox didn't actually win teh greatest canadian. Although he is great, he was actually the runner up to Tommy Douglas. Joe shithead is definitely a contender, but I bet Terry Fox coulda eatin more pancakes than shithead.
