R3TV Episode #69: Meat Draw

Posted by Jordan Kawchuk on Oct 30, 2008
This week, the stars were aligned here at R3TV.

Confession. Every weekend, for the past three years, I've been going to my local legion to join the old men and bet money for meat. It started out as a kitschy outing, but soon the irony went away, and now meatdraws are part of my life ritual.

So when the Victoria, B.C. band who calls itself Meatdraw was in town last Saturday, I knew it was meant to be. The best part - it was the first time these guys have ever been to one. I felt like a proud father taking his children to Disneyland for the first time.

I'm even prouder to say that nothing in this episode is staged. What happened that evening was meant to be. Thank you Beefgods.

Capping off this episode is the band's brand new, charmingly low-budget video for Old World. Please enjoy it all with a side of mash and gravy.

    Finally Kawchuk

I have been complaining for years… decades even. "Where is the meat draw episode" (not the band, although they're great, the raffle for uncooked animal carcass). I have started letter campaigns, created a BBS as a forum to encourage open, transparent dialogue towards the promotion of the Meat Draw episode.

But you kept it under covers. Hid it from us. And worse you thought we didn't notice.

Well I am proud here to say at 7:12 am on a cold Thursday morning in October, as I was just about to push the publish button on my new web page:

    www.expose_the_meat_draw_conspiracy/webpage/.html/geocities.com_org/freehosting.net

That you curtsied under my pressure and released the footage. The meat draw is real. And you can't hide it any more.

But… Where's the pepperettes? The Hot Rods?

    It's so perfect.

It's just providential that there is a vegetarian in Meatdraw. That was such a cute video too. Another smokin' great episode!

Lily Fawn is cute as can be

I like when they first tentatively touch the meat with their fingertips, then embrace and kiss it.

    but...

...if you win, how do you keep the meat refridgerated?!?

    Well Grant....

Everyone who goes to a meat draw knows refrigeration is for wusses. real men eat anything.

a little epilogue for the podcast:
After I won the glorious hunk of meat, our interviewer, Jordan, let it slide that Lisa Christensen lived nearby and was having a dinner party. We tried to get him to lead us there so we could crash the party with our huge block of meat, and bellies full of legion lager, but he wouldn't budge ( I suspect it may have been because of the hard time we gave him about his choice of beverage)
on the way back to Victoria I realized I had left the meat at my friends house. It was good to be home, but it the loss made it bittersweet.

    Meatdraw 101

Yes, I admit...I ordered a cider. So to come across more manly, here are some other facts about the meatdraw I can share:

    - There are four draws, one every half hour. On the last, there is a 6th bonus meat - usually something "classy" like game hen or pork tenderloin

    - There is a felt marker at the bar to write your name on your winning bag and keep it in the fridge until it's time to stumble out

    - R3TV's Old Man Scotty attends this one often

    - There is no profit made - only expenses to purchase the meat. All the money goes to children's and cancer charities (among others)

    - Close to Xmas and Thanksgiving, the meats are all hams and turkeys

    - There's an old man who says the same line every time someone goes up to win: "Take the buzzard!" Never gets tired.

    - The band Meatdraw needs to return. The place adored them. So did I.
