Congrats to Caribou.
I'm happy because I was worried that the Weakerthans would win and I'm not that big on them. It would be "blah" to me. Sorry Putzy and Grant since you are big fans of them. :)

I think that was a very wise choice. I don't know anybody that doesn't enjoy Caribou.

Since Dundas is officially part of Hamilton now we get to claim him.
With how bad the Ticats are, we need something good!

I have to say that Caribou does actually deserve this award. He is the first Polaris Prize winner who was legitimately one of the most critically acclaimed artists of the year. I think the Weakerthans and Black Mountain had albums that were as critically acclaimed as Caribou’s, but any one of them could legitimately have won. It is a little unfortunate, however, that yet again a jury made up of mostly southern Ontario people picked the one southern Ontario artist.

Souther Ontario

Actually, BigRockFan, both Basia Bulat and Shad are from London, ON, which are even more south than Dundas ON.
When will people from out west/east realize that population density dictates these things simply because of probability, not because of western/eastern alientation?

I understand that Basia Bulat and Shad are from London, but based on critical acclaim they were not amongst the front runners to win this award. With respect to population, it isn’t the best measure, but even at that Toronto and southern Ontario have been hugely over-represented in almost all aspects of the Polaris Prize. IIRC 5 of the 11 person final jury were based in Toronto, and another was from London, so southern Ontario had almost twice as many people on the final jury as it should have based on population, 6/11.

nice! there's other albums I was pretty excited about that didn't make the list (Sandro Perri, Veda Hille, the acorn), but andorra was definitely up there and Dan definitely deserves the win. Great choice!

Was there ever any doubt? It's would have been like suggesting Dion or McCain will win...

Why would you assume that judges are biased towards people from their own region? Do you really think a judge gets in that room and thinks "I really liked that Black Mountain record, but it'll be a cold day in HELL before I vote for someone from BC." NO!
And when I'm referring to population statistics, I'm referring to the artists. More of them come from this region largely because of population/probability.
You said it yourself that you think he deserves to win. Why can't you leave it at that? Why do you have to turn it into a negative thing, like there's some huge conspiracy?

Caribou?

Maybe with this cash, he can buy back the name Manitoba.
I guess we can call Polaris, the East Coast Music Prize.
Track to track, Black Mountain's album was better, but I could live with Caribou.

I guess I don’t know what point you’re trying to make. I said that I believed there were three artists whose albums have received a higher level of critical acclaim than the others, and that they have all received about the same level of critical acclaim, and therefore that any one of the three would have been a legitimate winner. Then I said that it was unfortunate that the final panel, on which 6 of the 11 judges were from southern Ontario, picked the one of the three artists who was from southern Ontario. That situation naturally raises questions about a possible bias. With respect to bias in general, there are many different kinds including intentional, unintentional and systemic biases. Any kind of credible research or awards process will be aware of this and will guard against not only any possible bias, but also the appearance of bias. Needless to say, the Polaris Prize to date has not even been close to being credible. In spite of that, however, they did pick a worthy winner this year, for the first time.
What was your point again?
