After their first Canadian show in over three decades, punk legend
Iggy Pop and his band the Stooges became the latest musicians to have all of their gear ripped off in a major heist yesterday.
According to Stooges road manager
Eric Fischer,
the yellow, 15-foot Penske truck that contained all of the group's stage gear and instruments were taken from outside the
Embassy Suites Hotel in Montreal, where the band was staying following their Sunday night show at the city's
Osheaga Festival.
Fischer told the
Detroit Free Press that the gear was worth "tens of thousands" of dollars, and included priceless vintage instruments such as
Mike Watt's Gibson 1963 EB-3 bass, which he has played since he was with
the Minutemen in the '80s.
"That bass would go in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame some day if we could find it," Fischer said. "We're all just gutted."
The Stooges are currently on a sweeping international tour that includes stops in Europe, Canada, Russia, Serbia and the U.S.
“I don’t know if it’s a syndicate that’s targeting bands on the road,
or what,” said Fischer. “But nobody ever seems to see this gear again.”
Despite the theft, the band plans to continue the tour, and will play in Toronto tomorrow night using rented and borrowed gear.
The truck had a Michigan licence plate numbered AC46493. For a list of the stolen items with photos, go
