Live on Radio 3: All Request Monday with a little Karaoke, OK?

Posted by Tariq Hussain on Jun 16, 2008

Hey folks - as you can see, I've gone from being Lana Gay last week to Grant Lawrence today. Lisa Christiansen, you're next!

Coming up today on Tariq live, 3PM ET / noon PT on CBC Radio 3's web radio:

On today's show: YOUR REQUESTS!

You have three ways to get in your requests:

:: post them on our blog
:: email
feedback@cbcradio3.com
:: call in and SING IT TO US LOUD AND PROUD to 1-877-955-6565 ex. 2

Also, a few nights ago a friend was telling me that she got dragged to a Karaoke bar on the weekend and ended up staying there until 2 AM! I asked her if she got on stage to sing, but she told me she hadn't. Maybe she was flat out lying, but she pretty much said: I hate Karaoke!!! and went to tell me stories of all the embarrassing performances she'd seen in her life (apparently, none of them were her own...apparently). That leads to my....

Poll Question of the day

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE KARAOKE SONG TO PERFORM?

Are you one of those people who regularly goes to Wednesday night Karaoke at the Legion, or Friday night Karaoke at Ducky's Pub? What's the best / worst / most outrageous Karaoke performance you've ever seen? How much do you love or hate Karaoke?

the best thing i think i've evr seen, karaoke or otherwise was 3 weeks ago at my friend justin's house. We're for lack of a better word brutal singer but we were overcome by song and ended up bursting out in rhyme right there. he jumped and danced and evn broke a picture frame... this all coming from a guy who loses his breath walking to the fridge from the breakfast table. In all i loved it and no karaoke moment can match it when he burst out singing/rappin "Indestrucktable Sam" bby Buck 65

luckily, I've never had to do Karaoke... and I mean luckily for the audience ;-)

Can we hear something by the Wheat Pool? Anything by them would be great!

    New Wavioke

I once had the chance to sing Madonna's Holiday with a backup band, The Tainted Lovers. They played my brother-in-law's 40th birthday party and after a couple of sets of 80s covers, offered up New Wavioke. I got to do all my Madonna dance moves I had practiced so hard back in the day. So fun!

Its dated now but I love doing 'I believe in a thing called love' by The Darkness. Basically, between the falsetto and the high-kicks I pass out from exhaustion mid-way through.

My friend loves to do 'Mr. Roboto'. He now teaches in Japan and when he does this song they look at him with absolute horror. Apparently, they take such things very seriously.

    I did it once...

It's sad to admit it, but earlier this year (after a whole bunch of drinks) I sang "stop right now" by the Spice Girls. Let me just say I'm glad that only pictures were taken and the performance wasn't recorded!

If I throw down a request, I would love to hear Vagabond by Hey Ocean + Shad K

    Go big or go home

I had karaoke as the reception at my wedding. (It was at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, and Peter Styles is one of the best karaoke hosts around. )

I have sung everything from Joan Jett to Madonna to Tom Jones and I have to say that country standards ("Stand By Your Man") or torch songs ("Fever") are the best way to really get the crowd goin.

Shoot - now people know my secret!

You know I love you Tariq

...because getting me to sing in this post-weekend voice is just about pure adoration for you!

Eek. Sorry about that dear listeners.

My favourite song to sing to is split between A-ha's Take on Me, and Peter Cetera's The Glory of Love. I can't say that the audiences enjoy my performances though, especially when it comes hitting the high notes on to the former.

Best place to sing Karaoke is definitely Duffy's Tavern in Toronto, on Bloor and Margueretta St.

Re: Live on Radio 3: All Request Monday with a little Karaoke, OK?

My one and only Karaoke experience took place in a Value Village in Bellingham - you got 50% off your purchase if you agreed to sing. I sang Be-bop-a-lu-la by the one and only Gene Vincent. That is my go to song. I don't need the lyrics because I still have the words memorized from when i performed the song in a Junior High School air guitar contest.
Strangely I was followed by a guy who refused a bed track and simply sang Amazing Grace a cappella in full voice. Thank god I didn't have to follow him.
The good news is i got a suite super8 camera for less than 10 bucks.

My request? I can't sing it because I'm in the library, but I'd love to hear "I'm getting a feel" by the Two-Minute Miracles.

    Don't Stop Believing!!!

I know its very over done and so cliche but I still love to belt out some Journey whenever I get the chance. Bon Jovi is a close second.

As for a request would it be possible to hear some older Islands, something along the lines of Jogging Gorgeous Summer to go along with the beautiful day I'm seeing through my office window here in Whitehorse

    Gangsters Paradise

Every time I go do karaoke, I do gangster's paradise. I don't need the lyrics, as I loved the song when I was in junior high, and still have it memorized from that time.

    Karaoke, and a request

Does cruising down the highway with the windows down, friends' arms out the windows, everyone singing along, count as karaoke? If so, the best song for it is Train's "Drops of Jupiter."

Could I hear "Spring Flower" by The Great Outdoors? I don't think I'll be singing it for you, but you'd make a fan south of Boston, Massachusetts, pretty happy!

Re: Live on Radio 3: All Request Monday with a little Karaoke, OK?

I once heard that if you can sing, than you can't do karaoke. I think, for the most part, that is true. I can sing, but I can't do karaoke to save my life.

So, as a rule of thumb, I go up and as a plain ol' white girl, I do as much hip hop as I can.

Hopefully, with any luck, the bars will catch up and let me do some Buck 65 while I am up there doing the best hip hop I can muster........

The trick to Karaoke is picking
    a) the right song
    b) the right version/key of the song
the reason why so many people sound bad singing karaoke is that karaoke tracks are frequently in the world's worst keys. True story.

    Love Shack for Two

If you"re not a good singer, grab a partner and jump up on stage to the B-52's Love Shack. It's fun and easy, and you can share the glory/shame!

I'd love to hear some Smoosh!

    SH*T

I sang live on the radio and got the words wrong to that Violet Archers song. My girlfriend called to let me knw. Anyway, she wanted to know if you could play "There you Go" by Change of Heart. Her name is Christine. I told her that this song was probbaly not in your stacks anymore, but what the heck. It's worth a try. As a backup, she said to ask for "Don't Haunt This Place" by Rural Alberta Advanatge . Thanks. Love the all request shows.

PS. My favourite karaoke song is "Love Shack". When I do the "Love Shack Baby!" part, the crowd always goes wild.

    the bane of my childhood

I dunno if it's the Chinese heritage, but karaoke was the bane of my childhood. There's nothing more embarrassing than watching your dad attempt to belt out Roy Orbison's "Only the Lonely" in front of 30 or 40 friends and family.

I have thankfully avoided being coerced into karaoke, though I did do Madonna's "Like a Prayer" once in one of those private karaoke rooms, where the embarrassment factor is minimized.

No request....but everyone have a good Monday!
