Help Wanted: The Future of CBC Radio 3

Help Wanted: The Future of CBC Radio 3

Posted by Steve Pratt on Apr 28, 2008
At CBC, this is the time of year when we all set objectives for the next 12 months and try to figure out where we want Radio 3 to go next. So we’re holding a Radio 3 one-day ‘staff summit’ on May 9th to talk about the year ahead and I’m hoping that you can:
:: help us make sure that our decisions are informed ones
:: give us information to help make Radio 3 even better
I’ve put together a web poll and am asking everyone who reads this to fill it out.

The results could have an effect on everything from our music playlists to future website offerings, and from R3TV episodes to weekend radio programming. There’s also a few questions about how you use web radio – we want to keep making it better and better, but we need to know when you’re listening and for how long in order to do that.

So whether this is your first time ever visiting the site or you’re a candidate for next year's Fan of the Year Bucky Award, we want your input into where we’re going.

So, PLEASE (capitals = begging) click below and help us out. I’ll be sure to give you all an update after the summit.

TAKE ME TO THE POLL

(And if there's something you want us to know that's not addressed in the poll, please leave us a comment on this post.)

Thanks - everyone at Radio 3 really appreciates all the help and feedback you give us to make our programming better for you and all the Canadian artists we love to support.

Steve

I believe you have a time gap between 1 and 3 years in the answers to the first question.

    Less than a month
    1-6 months
    6-12 months
    ->
    Longer than 3 years

    a few suggestions

A few of the comments have no "none of the above option" and a few should allow you to select more than one answer...like where I listen to web radio, and what genre of music I think it should play.

    Some suggestions

I love CBC3, I listen to it at school, I listen to it at home, and I listen to it on my phone

What do I love about CBC Radio 3? I love how you can hear Corb Lund on the SAME station as Pride Tiger and Cadence Weapon. The diversity of the hosts is amazing, every host brings something different to the plate, Lana with her quirkyness, Grant/Chris A. with their knowledge, Craig with this Craigness, etc

I am in no way a fan of constant repeats, how many thousand tracks are on NMC but I hear "Hit this City" like 3 times an hour, why not play some older tracks, such as older Weakerthans.

Some of the schedule needs to be changed so some people have a better chance of listening to the programming, lots of people CAN'T listen to Grant's show because they may work 9-5, why not have a "best of" show of Grant from the previous week including interviews, etc, like right before the R3-30. When I first heard Grant's show on terrestrial radio (I was a fan of the podcast since the beginning but didn't realize he had his own radio show) on CBC 2 back in 2006 or so, I was heading to a friend's gathering in the middle of the country, I literally stopped the car right in the middle of a gravel road in the middle of nowhere, just because it was his show! I later discovered his show again on CBC2 a year later.. with the R3-30 following it.

My weekly CBC Radio 2 combo was listening to Grant's show then R3-30 while watching the game on tv on mute, if there was a "best of" show before R3-30, this would return my amazing saturday evenings once again!

Shows like Fuse need to be better slotted, I only heard it once, and it was an amazing show, but I guess it's off R3 now?

I would also love to see lots more diversity guest hosts, even if it's once or twice a month, have people like the guys from Sloan or Buck 65 come back for a show or two, or have them co-host a show with Grant or Craig, it's great to hear the people whos music you love to listen to.. guest hosting the show!

I loved stuff like See Vous Play and Montreal Pop Explosion, there should be a monthly event that CBC plays live on the air on R3, whether it be an act or two at something like a folk festival or a CBC3 sponsored event. Oh and I (as well as a bunch of my friends) want to see Tour Tournee 2!

Since this is CBC, what amazes me is that it's ad free, it has a huge advantage over x FM stations! Plus CBC3 plays the artists that end up making it big (Pride Tiger, Wintersleep, Feist being examples), CBC3 knows what's going to potentially make it big, while FM stations just go "we won't play that band because nobody will listen to them" when 8 months later they do anyways (Wintersleep was an example.. I recommended it to them and they had the nerve to say that, but eventually played them anyways)

CBC3 rocks as it is, I'd love to see more "request" shows, maybe even a "all request saturday" or something.

Oh and bring back CBC3 on CBC2, Craig and Pedro in the same booth, and "City of the Week", if only eh?

    Saturday nights...

I must mirror what Cody said.

Saturday nights were the best, 5 hours of GL, then the R3-30. I can't tell you how much I miss it. Weekends have gone from the best part of the week, to very, very, VERY lame.

I don't think that wanting more of a mix and less of the "Indie Top 40" will be news to you.

I consistently see bands that I have heard about on R3, and I would really like a place for people to post show reviews. Seeing the pictures on "last night's gig" is great, I check regularly.

R3 is very important to me, I do my best to spread the word.

    Yes, more Scotty.

    Acoustic and Roots rock

love to have one slot put aside for the less pop-ish stuff, such as acoustic, songwriter ballads and roots rock. Throw country in the mix too, but ya gotta weed out the crap.

    you could call it

    HEART BEAT
    or
    BASICALLY GREAT
    or
    DAN MANGAN AND PALS

    or something like that.

    Hosts without the mosts

    Hey Steve,
I really appreciate the exposure to all these great (and other) bands. But truth is, I like it better without the hosts. If I want chatter, I can choose any mainstream commercial radio. So I use the playlists constantly, as the hosts, lovely as they may be for some, drive me crazy.
    So, IMO less is more.

    Oh!

And how about a half hour show dedicated to just songs that aren't yet in rotation at R3?

Like, a half-hour of Chart-busters, and a few Rareties, older songs, and mebbe a few good songs that aren't likely to get play elsewhere on R3.

    And you could call it,

    Under the Rock
    or
    Mebbe Mighty
    or
    Whither Canada?

Re: Help Wanted: The Future of CBC Radio 3

R3TV could be longer if you ask me. I like everything it has from festival coverage to interviews to radio 3 office skits and of course, hairy old scottish men.

I like the idea being thrown around here about a show or time slot dedicated to the un-rotated songs.

Best thing about radio 3, web interaction! Don't change a thing about that, I love being able to take part in discussions, make requests and everything from the blog.

Something we need is to push people to attend shows and maybe even some ticket give-aways (if you guys can swing it)

    Hosts are snazz-pants

Not to be a downer on above opinions (especially fair ones), but I'm afraid I must disagree with Starker.

The hosts are a huge part of why I love Radio 3 so much! They're diverse, intelligent, articulate and largely hilarious people and the station may as well be iTunes without them. Radio 3 stands out in the world of web radio because, despite being on the web, it is still has the feeling of an accessible, non-elitist, terrestrial radio station. The familiarity of the hosts is a huge part of what makes this station accessible while it's music and mandate make it special. Furthermore, R3 is lucky because its hosts are actually talented. I think it's ill fitting to compare their commentary to the mindless chatter of commercial radio stations.

And on a closing note- sorry Starker, hopefully the genre specified host-free sub-channels mentioned in the poll will be more up your alley...?

    Agreed and more suggestions

Hey it's really all about time, money, and bodies right? So why not post help wanted where you guys need it, to make all these great ideas happen? Whether it is you that needs a volunteer, or even say an artist who needs a place to crash on the tour. These things would really tighten this community.

I agree the mix of music is great, some more old stuff mixed in would be good too, and a little more variety, less repeats in a day at least. Also Fuse was/is great! Special guest hosts are always amazing.

I think the only other radio station that I really love on the net in the yahoo launchcast as far as how it's set up to play to one's preferences, through voting for songs and artists.

Show reviews would be a good thing of course. Ticket giveaways or artist greets/hang outs would be wicked!.

...but my biggest thing I am missing right now is old archived concerts and sessions that have been taken down:( It's great to listen to old shows from 5 years ago and reminisce or wish you were there.

    Web interface?

I'm surprised that the poll doesn't get into the user-interface and R3 website. I don't know about you guys.. but its feeling a little boxed in. Is that in the works at all?

First time caller, long time listener...

I was just turned onto this site a week ago and all I can say is WOW! Totally blown away by the user interace, the track adding ability, the friggin' awesome tunes on here.

The artists enjoy some great exposure aind ts pretty cool to be able to share playlists with others. I'm telling all my friends to get on here, asap. I live in a smaller town and if I ever see any of the artists on my playlist roll in, I'll be sure to check them out.

Anyways, a bow and a good ol' tip of the hat to all involved!

    Listening from Abroad

    Hello CBCR3!

I listen to the web radio from my office in Singapore and given the 12 hour difference between Toronto and Singapore, I find that I am listening to your late night and over night programming during my daytime.

I rarely get the chance to listen to day time or prime time Radio 3 as this is when I am typically asleep or at home (where my playing web radio is trumped by my wife's desire to listen to other things).

It would be really cool if you could repeat some of the prime time programs during the hours when you are just airing hostless music (i.e. it would be very cool to hear the three hour R330 that Craig is always talking about on the podcast or some of the other shows I read about on the blog).

Other than that, I download the podcasts for my commute to and from work and listen to web radio on a daily basis from my office. Keep up the good work!

Re: Help Wanted: The Future of CBC Radio 3

I like the diversity of music, but segmenting music for the sake of flow can be a good thing. Just like in the podcast with 3 songs which usually fall within similar genres, it would be better if there were sets of different music. I'd love to tune in and hear a stretch of electronica or beats or alt-count or something. The mix is OK, but it's hard to get in a mood, which often makes me stop listening.

Re: Help Wanted: The Future of CBC Radio 3

I have to add my vote for the hosts. Back when it was the weekly podcast, and random music all day I felt like I had no good info on the bands, the relationships, their shows. I love having the hosts fill in a lot of the blanks now. They make Radio 3 unique in my opinion.

Looking forward to the future of R3, ever evolving. Keep up the great work you're doing.

    Hosts

I thought the question of the hosts was more or less resolved by there being a stream or a version of the R3 that was hostless, or host-lite.

If not, it is a thought, but as for me, I don't think I'd be listening were it not for the engaging and often informative presence of the hosts.

And that includes Lisa Chistiansen, and she scares me. Obviously suppressing violent urges. Scares, and faintly excites, like vanilla incense, with thorns.

    Few Suggestions

What I really want is the ability to see my playlist in alphabetical order by artist or just have a button that shows repeated songs, because I know I have a bunch of doubled songs on my playlist, I just can't find them.
It would also be nice to be able to play a mix songs of a certain genre. It would be nice to go into NMC and click a 'play random space pop' button etc.
Otherwise its great, keep up the good work.

    User Interface

Radio 3 Designer Ahmed here. Just want to assure the Duke of Dupont that major consideration is being given to the whole user interface side and we will be breaking the site out of all these little boxes. And to all of you who are commenting, thanks very much for your feedback so far -- it's very very helpful to us here to know whether we're on the right track.

    Hosts and channels

Re: the poll, I wouldn't listen to any new channels that offered less variety, but that wasn't a poll answer option. I think loving the variety was covered in comments here pretty well.

The hosts are funny and smart, unlike conventional radio hosts. I listened before there were hosts, and loved it. Now that there are hosts, I love R3 more.

One "new channel" that I probably would listen to occasionally would be a hostless version with the same variety in the playlist. I love the playlist option on the web site, but I can't tear myself away from your picks for long enough to create one.

Also a weird technical thing. It seems like the music is always at a louder than the hosts, and I find myself constantly adjusting the volume if I want to hear them.

Congrats to everybody at R3. Webby or not, this is the best place for new music, the best place for Canadians music, and the best place for musical quality of all genres. Keep it up. We love you.

    poll

well, i did the poll (and reveled in clicking the vote now button one last time! did the vote get collected? anyway..) and it felt very, um, well, like a let down. none of those questions nor my answers can really tell you how i feel about cbc radio 3.

i remember when r3 was that simple cute web log with all those awesome photographs and the ezine soundtrack. to me, when that first hit, it changed the way i believed CBC could operate for us "younger" or "hipper" folks. i even went to that quadra/young and sexy show way back when at the scotia centre and actually felt part of something. and i loved it.

it took me a long time to get used to the new format. i really don't listen to cbc radio 3 streaming and download the podcasts and listen to them sometimes, but the blog is on my bloglines and i think that keeps it up to date for me.

i'd like it if the r3media player didn't start right away and that id be allowed to turn it on. i also with that r3 would just have a FM stream here in PG!!

things i love about r3 are the flashy little banners on the left <---, the searchlight competition (yay!), the blogging (fun!), and the "mix" of the music on the "radio". i think it would be cool if you did celebrity play lists (oooooh, what would tegan play?), allowed members to have established profile pages like on blogger or ravelry or vox, or even had celebrity bloggers! wouldn't it be cool if the searchlight winner got to be a celebrity blogger, every year a different winner/blogger!

ANYWAY, this is going on and on. your survey needs "comments boxes".

    Hosts

Waaaaaaay too much hostiness. I like them, they add a lot. But if I listen to R3 every day at work, it's like I have to see the same four ugly faces every day. It gets old, some quicker than others. I'm presently in an R3 detox period, I just could not stand it any more. I think maybe it is not understood that being ironically obnoxious is still obnoxious after you hear it long enough. Dial back everything but the music by about 66%, please and thankyou!

(PS: None of this applies to Buck 65. OBVIOUSLY.)

    Host-liness is next to ...

I gotta make sure that us who like the hosts outnumber those who don't. Nothing helps me through a long day of work then the hosts. Music I can get anywhere, I've got a decent library on my iPod and there's all the music on here. The hosts and other content is the biggest thing that makes R3 unique.

If you really want to appease the host haters, maybe you can have a stream that puts songs over the host parts (I know this is really hard for the live hosts) or just a completely seperate stream (I've been told this exists but I haven't seen or used it so I'm not sure)

btw, look for the post about the new website if you have user interface complaints as well.

    hostliness, music and other things

i like the hosts. i listen mainly at work through headphones and have often guffawed out loud at something that was said (thanks, Craig). i have a playlist but tend not to listen to it because i want to hear what the hosts have to say. and i love that there are no obnoxious commercials. yay! public radio.

i like the mix of music. i'm exposed to music i wouldn't normally choose, and too my surprise find i like it. i don't want an all-(insert music genre of choice here) station/hour. at least not during work hours. maybe have them during late-night hours.

i like the suggestion of playing music from the past. the pool of music that is chosen from needs to be broadened. there are times i hear one song played three times in one day.

i like being able to use the blog to respond to host's comments/queries. who knew that radio could be so interactive?

i like the ever-changing photo in the background from Flicker. who do i pay to get my photo up there?
