The Craig Norris/Tom Lucier Hour - Thursday, March 27, 2008

Posted by Craig Norris on Mar 27, 2008
Well, well! As I was getting ready to do my show today, who should appear at my door but Windsor, Ontario's own Tom Lucier! I had never met Tom in person, but have heard of his club (Phog Lounge) and had even heard his podcast (shanetom.com) so I thought, "Hey! Maybe he should be my co-host today!" Tom agreed, and he's sitting in for the entire show today.

Besides playing some great bands that have played his place (The D'urbervillesAttack In Black, Ladyhawk, Jon Mckiel) and some great bands that will soon be playing his place (Elbow Beach Surf Club), we even discuss the state of live music these days. We'll also delve into the real hometown of Christine Fellows, Tom's work for CBC Radio 1's Spark, and why you shouldn't go to shaneandtom.com (notice there's no link to that one).

    Of course there are others

I was frozen when it came to mentioning other venues in Windsor that bring great acts through town...
    Here are a few:
The long lost Avalon Front was phenomenal...and we miss them dearly.

    The Loop (newly resurrected)
    The Coach & Horses
    Milk Coffee Bar
The Room (new with the "live" music scene)
The Boom Boom Room (DJs etc)

People just need to understand how healthy I see the Canadian music scene, as I am so emphatically proud of how diversely kick-ass it is on all fronts.

When I see Holy F#&% at SXSW being touted as Lou Reed's new favourite band or when I see Tokyo Police Club playing Lollapalooza and Coachella or even just hearing about a Bob Wiseman playing in Italy with Feist while on tour...I just shake my head, as they are down-to-earth musicians who've played this 60-capacity hole in the wall.

I wish for so much more for you talents...

    Tom Lucier

Tom is one of the funniest people I know, and if you haven't heard "Shane and Tom's Squeezebox" - a podcast for the criminally insane... you are missing some of this country's funniest conversations. Be sure to find them at www.shaneandtom.com this from someone who never misses a show! Why hasn't CBC picked up this show anyway???

Okay Tom what about Changez, Club Vertigo, The Sandwich Mill and The Ditch? ;)

I did my university years in Windsor, worked at The Lance, and spent many a night on the town and in Detroit seeing a rawk show or twelve. I have to say Windsor is one great great city to live in if you like the rawk.

Speaking of which, how familiar are you with former station managers at CJAM?

    CJAM

I'm very familiar with the current and recently passed CJAM folks, as I had a silly talk show there for a little while a year and a half ago.

    Vertigo is GONE.
Changez is GONE (now called "Venues").
    The Mill is GONE.

Aside from the Avalon closing, which was a brutal event, because they were vital in the scene, The Sky Lounge (very small) used to have great little shows too...

But you're right when you say this town is a "rawk city". We have SO much here, and now that the bands have been heavily trodding through here for the past 5 years or so (maybe longer) it has been amazing if you're a show-goer.

My sister-in-law used to be the manager there - at CJAM… a few years back.

I remember when your joint was, was it Uncommon Ground? And I miss Bubi's burgers like burning!

One thing I have always like about you and the Phog ilk is that despite what a fruitless industry the bar and band scene is, you guys are still fantastic 'pushers' of the wares we have to offer in Canada, much the same way Grant does. And even better is that there is no cruddy competitiveness in you, you promote the scene, not your location.

    Good on ya!

    Windsor Represent!

As a gal who was raised in Leamington, growing up, about 90% of the shows I saw were in Windsor the other 10% occurred when I snuck across the border to Detroit without telling my parents. I'm happy to know that there's a venue that provides the "I saw them in a room with about 50 people before they were huge" experience, which is one that can't really be duplicated.

    Three cheers for the Phog!
(I'm coming to visit the fam next week, mark my words, I'm stopping by for a pint!)

    Show me the ID

Lana, show some ID and I'll buy you a drink for your troubles! That is...if I'M working...heh-heh.

One of the things I find that goes unsaid, is how these promoters in Canada (for the most part) and Windsor, try their best to share the "secret" of indie Canadian music because they love it.

I have no musical talent myself (what is my talent?) and I have the utmost respect for these virtuosos who parade through here playing original music like there's nothing to it.

I know Craig is one of those "music guys" and has forgotten more about music than I'll ever know, but I wonder what he thinks about the overall treatment of bands on tour.

Everyone has an idea of where they're going to be bathed in praise and appreciation, and that some venues (and patrons) go a step further to give people a place to sleep etc., but the life of a musician, although much more spotlit, seems like a damn tough road to hoe.
