Live on CBC Radio 3: SEARCHLIGHT! The Search For The Best Record Store In Canada...

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Mar 19, 2008

Today we launch a brand new CBC Radio 3 series called Searchlight. We'll seek out the best that Canada has to offer musically - and we have decided to launch our series in celebration of Canada's independent record retailers. This brings us to our...

Poll Question of the Day: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE INDEPENDENT RECORD STORE IN CANADA?

A topic that has come up again and again on our show is the threatened demise of your favourite, independent record store due to our digital music climate. Terry McBride recently called the indie record store "the last great musical community centre". Across Canada, many of these great stores continue to survive... some thriving, some hanging on by a thread.

Please post your nomination of your favourite store on our blog today. We'll compile all of your favourite stores and next week post the TOP TWENTY STORES that YOU will then get to vote on. The following week, we'll slim in down to a TOP TEN, then a TOP FIVE, and finally, on April 19th, which is International Record Store Day, we'll announce our Searchlight #1 independent record store in Canada.

CBC Radio 3 will broadcast live from the winning store, which will also receive a winning trophy and plaque, will get rigged with Sirius satellite radio stereo system, and will have a special in-store appearance from their favourite local artist that we will also broadcast live.

So hop on the blog and let us know all about your favourite store and why it should be nominated! If you're shy, feel free to email us your passionate reply to feedback@cbcradio3.com.

Back Alley Music, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

One of the best stores I have been to, I still remember going into the shop when I was younger , when it was actually in this dark alley and was sort of shady when it was Back Alley Records.

With the new owners and a more reconizable location this shop supports the local music community on Prince Edward Island by featuring a large inventory of local artists and supplying various resources for local and touring musicians. They also book and promote in-store performances and CD-releases which allow for a small and intimate setting.

Live on CBC Radio 3: SEARCHLIGHT! The Search For The Best Record Store In Canada...

I love Rotate This in Toronto, and there were a bunch in Vancouver I really loved, but I have to say Encore Records in Kitchener is my favourite. Perhaps it is because I have been going there regularily for over a decade, but it always has what I am looking for. The staff is great, and there is a dog there too.
If Encore had not existed, who know's what my musical taste would be like.

    Second for Back Alley Music

I have to second East Coast Music's nomination of Back Alley Music.

I attended the Immaculate Machine in store performance on Saturday and it was awesome. They also had a local band opening, who I'd never heard of (Boxer the Horse) who kicked ass.

    Soundscapes
    College Street, Toronto

So much less pretentious than Rotate This. The guy used to be an accountant and then quit his day job to open a record store.

Dr. Disc in London, ON was great, but I think it's closed now. Also in London is Speed City Records. I don't know if it still exists or not these days. but that guy had the best collection of punk, hardcore, Americana and rockabilly CDs this side of ...anywhere.

2nd the Nom. for Soundscapes, really without equal in Toronto : If you ever have a digital music store version then it's Zunior hands down (iTunes would go down in flames).

    Encore Encore Encore!!!

Encore Records in Kitchener Waterloo is my favorite shop in Canada! They have everything..and their Frank Zappa collection is about 10 rows deep. Very Canadian indie dependant, and they always have good obscure records playing in the shop at all times. Encore 10/10

    Regina!

Vintage Vinyl!! Jeff Corbett is one of the best live music supporters EVER, and he also runs this store full full full of gem records and discs. smart travelers make this a sure stop on their way through town. it's also a head shop, so you can fill all your needs in one swoop.

x-ray records is just a couple of doors down and is more boutique-ee and expensive, but you'll find rarities and new vinyl there - Dave Kisenko (sp?) runs that shop and knows what he's talking about.

(but my paradisial record shop is in nashville - "grimey's")

    Zulu in Vancouver

I end up at Zulu a lot of the time since I live 3 blocks away so I'll give it my vote. Always got some good stuff to try at listening stations.
Usually it's where I get all my concert tickets.

Still, I've only been once or twice when hunting down some high selling tickets but I liked Scratch too. The staff seemed a little nicer, sometime the Zulu guys give of this cloud of uppity-ness or something. Not all of them, but maybe I just haven't got to know them well enough.

Still, Zulu out of convenience and a cool name.

    Favorite Indie Record Store

Alas, in Red Deer Alberta, I don't even think we have an independent record store. I recall there used to be a store downtown called Records to the Rafters, but I don't even know if it's still there. These days I mostly buy online, but it would be cool if there was something else around.

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3: SEARCHLIGHT! The Search For The Best Record Store In Canada...

I don't know the name of it, but it's around Albert Street in Winnipeg. It MIGHT be "Into the Music". I know fellow Winnipeggers could help me with that.

Well I was visiting an HMV in Winnipeg back in the summer of '05 and was asking the clerk at the store what he recommended for new Winnipeg music, and a big smile lit up his face, I could tell he was a huge local-music fan, that's one of the reasons I got into the music I listen to now. He goes "you're not going to find that **** here man, I'll give you the address to this amazing record shop only a few blocks away from here, they will have everything you're looking for, and tell them I sent you there!"

Then I followed his directions and I sure wasn't disappointed, I found almost everything (if not everything) I needed, I ended up buying an album by the Waking Eyes and the Perpetrators there. I'm not sure why that guy would work at an HMV though.. he knew his music too much..

    Screaming Mimis

My vote would be for the late Screaming Mimi's.

Unfortunately, Hamilton, and possible Canada's finest independent music store, Screaming Mimi's is no longer. Whether it was victim of the digital music age, or simply Hamilton's economy, Screaming Mimi's was definitely a favourite spot for many in the Hammer who appreciated Hamilton's surprisingly vibrant music scene.

But since Mimi's is close, I'll have to throw my support behind Criminal Records.

    Winnipeg record stores Extrodinaire!

Into The Music - I remember visiting this record store during its first few weeks of business, way back in....the early 90's sometime. It has been a cornerstone of the Winnipeg music scene ever since. Thank you Greg !!!

a more recent addition to the Winnipeg music nerd circuit is the mighty Music Trader in Osborne Village. the staff and selection are both top notch!!! A must stop during any Winnipeg trip.

Please include these two fantastic stores in your nominations list.

    The Vinyl Diner, Saskatoon, SK

Saskatoon's The Vinyl Diner is small, it doesn't have tons of stock, and for the longest time last year it smelled like paint. But it's also owned and operated by the nicest, most genuine, and least pretentious record store 'dude' I have ever encountered. His two dogs hang out at the store with him all day. They're cute and great. His name is Stu and his record store is a national treasure.

Red Cat Records For the Win

This little shop in Vancouver is my favorite. Red Cat tries to have everything you are looking for and if they don't have it they bend over backwards to get it for you. ZULU VS RED CAT and winnipeg fav

    Vancouver:
Zulu vs. Red Cat- zulu does have a bigger selection and virtually every concert ticket I've ever wanted has been sold there. That said, the employees can come off kind of snobbish, and I remember going there and them not having heard of a certain local band I had heard on r3 and elsewhere. that kind of turned me of. I want knowledgeable staff but without the "im-so-cool-and-awesome-i-work-at-a-record-store" vibe. and for these reasons Ill pick RED CAT RECORDS, plus they throw great parties and are such a fantastic institution in Vancouver. and you know they'll never run out of mint records favss.

Also, I discovered a teriffic store in Winnipeg. Like the poster above, Im not sure what it was called. I discovered Tokyo Police Club there a few yrs ago just because the cover caught my eye lol! I think it was on Albert St.

    Zulu and Scratch

I generally peruse Zulu and Scratch in Vancouver. I tend to only buy used CDs so I can get more bang for the buck but I pretty much get all my concert tickets from these stores.

As a side contest... I would like to nominate Budgie Burrito on Kingsway as the store most wanting to be like an Indie record store. I love standing there ready to order for a few minutes while the clerk talks to her friends, and then shows a face of annoyance when she realizes she ought to take my order.

    Another nod for Red Cat

What Zulu carries in shear volume, Red Cat surpasses by miles in helpful, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Dave & Co. never fail to provide great suggestions and info. X-Ray Records - Regina, SK

Dave Kuzenko's shop is a beacon in downtown Regina. Whenever I'm looking for something new I stumble into X-ray and Dave has loads of new releases, special orders, and re-releases that you won't find in any of the monster box stores sprawling out into prairies.

Dave's always there to help me find what I'm looking for (even if I don't know what that is) - recommend new bands- or just shoot the shit about music (or baseball).

X-Ray's been giving us an independant choice for over 20 years and is a huge supporter of live music in Regina and deserves to be on this list.

    great Wpg stores

Into the Music is definitely the store on Albert that people are trying to remember. That place has been the aboslute best place to buy indie music (new and used) since...um, the early 90s at least, which is when I discovered it in a little hole in the wall on Corydon Ave, then for years on Osborne St and now in the Exchange District of downtown Wpg. Always the best selection, and staff who know their shit but aren't snobby about it.

I would encourage anyone in the region of Prince George, BC to check out MEOW RECORDS, the best little Record stroe that Could. Since opening just over one year ago, MEOW RECORDS has fundraised for the SPCA, sponsored a freakish number of concerts and bands, promoted local artists, published a "Girls of MEOW RECORDS" calendar, started a record label, organized a Roller Derby team, and provided the city formerly known as Prince with the best selection of CD's and LP's that music has to offer. Re: Live on CBC Radio 3: SEARCHLIGHT! The Search For The Best Record Store In Canada...

I'm nominating Meow Records in Prince George BC as the BEST record shop imaginable -- not just in PG, not just in CANADA, but EVER! Seriously, it is rare to see anyone put as much energy into their business as Bryndis Ogmundson puts into Meow Records. Not only does she provide her clientel with a wonderful selection of tunes both old and new, on formats both old and new, but she *builds community*

What ever happened to local businesses being the movers and shakers of cities? Businesses should be at the center of organizing and mobilizing community involvement! Bryndis at Meow Records has been the creative guru behind amazing projects which allow local artists to come together under a communal project that truly serves to communicate the passion of Prince George's local music scene. Such projects have been a Wings tribute album (Band on the Run), an album with an animal theme to provide financial support for the local SPCA, and - my personal favorite - a monthly-issued series of vinyl 7" singles featuring various lo-fi inspired recordings by local artists (The Wax Society).

Truly, I can't imagine any other record store being what Meow Records is. Zulu Records, arguably the most notable record store in Western Canada, has *nothing* on Meow Records. Again, Bryndis has put so much energy into Meow Records, making it the cultural center for all things music and art in Prince George. If Bryndis can make it work as she has in the small northern reaches of BC, she could make it happen anywhere. Don't let the number of votes a place like Vancouver or Toronto can provide sway your decision -- the passion of Prince George music lovers should speak louder than any 100 votes from major cities. Meow is a blessing in an isolated city.

    That's my two cents.
    Gavin Elder

    Meow Records, Prince George, BC

Anybody who prefers downloading to the joy of spinning a new piece of vinyl is just dead inside.

Meow is a great indie store owned and operated by Bryndis, former music director at CFUR Radio, editor of the Earshot! national campus radio chart, and creator of the Rated PG Roller Girls roller derby league. You can't beat that kind of cred.

Meow is a great place to enjoy buying music that exists in a physical form. Go there. Buy a record. Take it home. Give it a spin. Throw that MP3 player in the trash.

itunes and its fans can suck it.

I like red cat because despite my geezer age [saw Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison live] I am stiil fairly current in the tunes department and Red CAT is close to home and seels alot of my desired melodies. Zulu has a cold uber-cool attitude that's a bit of a turn off although they have a good used area. Neptunes is pretty good but it's for the ultra collector . Dat's my pic ,ok

I have to get my raves in for X-Ray Records in Regina, SK. I've been going to that store since I was a shy teenager (dare I admit, 20 years ago), desperate for new music that was never easy to find in our province. Dave at X-Ray always has time for his customers and stock to boot!

red cat, soundscapes and sonic boom

    ok
    1. red cat in vancouver because it is the perfect size for routine browsing of new releases and NO tude. I feel warm and fuzzy every time I go. You know you are around awesome music fans who are just as excited as you are and happy to chat about music. Nice little vinyl collection also.

    2. Soundscapes (toronto) because great, easy to navigate selection of indie/local and a fun place to hang and generally little to no tude.

    3. Sonic boom for pure selection in virtually every genre - highly underrated for its vynil in comparison to Rotate (now an entire floor) I have never experienced tude here, although I've heard of it happening.

    Hounourable mentions:
Zulu has an unrivalled selection of good shit. However, there is the smell of "fu*k you customers" in the air and it stinks bad. Not worth it unless looking to paw for a few hours.

Cheap thrills in montreal. I don't have much to say about it, but its pretty much acceptable in every category.

    Dishonourable mention goes to:

Rotate this - rude, tude, dude! I hate this store. This atmos is not necessary or attractive. Selection is overrated - only average for most things. It is a small store. The discount vinyl usually blows and I routinely can't find what I'm looking for there. Until soundscapes opened there was that awful feeling of anticipated scorn to contend with when all I wanted was easy access to an indie or local release. Now I just never darken the door except as an absolute last resort because I don't like supporting them.

Scratch - don't give me attitude when I try to buy tickets from you every single time. Like I give a --- if you like the band I'm seeing. You're a store not a gatekeeper.

Can't believe no one has posted this store yet, they've been around for 10+ years, are in a huge new(ish) location and fiercely independent. They seem to only carry the best punk rock, hardcore, indie, hip hop, metal, jazz, etc. Biggest new vinyl selection on the prairies hands down!

My votes in order would be:

Meow Records, Prince George, BC. End of Discussion.

Meow Records is not only worthy of being nominated as the best record store in Canada, but to the residents of Prince George it has already won.

As it has already been noted, Bryndis has gone above and beyond what anyone in the local music scene or general public would have expected. As an editor of Earshot! And former music director of CFUR (as CWEarl has already mentioned) it’s apparent that Bryndis is not just a passing fan of music, but has volunteered her spare time and built her career around her passion for music.

Meow Records has created a wax society that features a different local artist/band every month on vinyl available for purchase. Meow has put on many events and concerts for the community (as an example: Meow just held a concert on March 17, and allowed students from UNBC to run the bar as a fundraiser for student groups). Bryndis has been an active member in Prince George community as well, and has already begun the initial stages of establishing a roller derby league for women.

In the year that Meow Records has been open it has already become the most prized of our locally owned businesses.

If Meow Records doesn’t win, the residents of Prince George will be sure to create our own plaque for Bryndis and the staff.

i feel so loved to be mentioned as not only a knowledgeable staff person but also hott!! yay!

when i lived in vancouver i went to zulu, and red cat, and scratch, but well, NEVER FELT COOL ENOUGH TO WORK IN A RECORD STORE!! but now i do! i was cool enough! i always was!

Meow has made living in prince george easier to swallow than a pint of buckleys. In the short 8 months I've worked there and the short 14 ish months it's been open I've had the opportunity to watch friends' bands get released, be a calendar girl, write for magazines (Snippets and Fresh Breath of Mint) for the store, see the community excitement about our events (can anyone still tell i'm excited from my Jenny Omnichord haircut and the burning hell show on Monday LET ALONE hanging out with Chad VanGaalen this summer?!), watch our entire customer base stand by us through a flood?

Meow is the sort of store where local acts are supported beyond belief, local clothing designers/crafters can sell their wares with low commission, artists can post their art and sell it with no commission, local bands can sell tickets with only putting our logo on their poster (no cut for us!), and I have the most fun with the greatest boss ever and feel respected and understood when I need to take time off to leave the north to see a show!

The minute you enter the store you just know, you won't be disappointed. The staff is exceptional and the selection is phenominal. Bryndis has done a wonderful job of not only making Music Fun to buy again, but at making her community feel supported by her business. Her support of young upcoming talent mixed with her generousity in helping community charities and organizations makes her the number one pick.

Unlike the Minutemen, this is a three-way tie for first

Unlike the Minutemen, this is a three-way tie for first:
    1. Backstreet Records, Saint John, NB
    2. Taz Records, Halifax, NS
    3. Zulu Records, Vancouver, BC
For generations of listeners, our first explorations into music occurred at a record store, and for the truly devout, our appreciation of music is tied to these shops. I've spent more hours record shopping than I'd care to admit, from browsing at Spillers Records, the world's oldest record store, founded in 1894 in Cardiff, Wales—to working at one of Canada's largest, the short-lived Virgin Megastore in Vancouver. Now, I live in Halifax and the closure of Sam the Record Man and Music World have effectively halved the retailers here. There's no better time to recognize three of the great record stores are truly independent—Backstreet Records in Saint John, Taz Records in Halifax, and Zulu Records in Vancouver.

My formative musical experiences happened in Backstreet Records. Gordie Tufts' Germain Street shop has been serving a broad mix of shoppers for twenty-seven years. Hipsters seeking the next big thing often rub shoulders with folks who buy one CD a year, and they all leave happy. Contrary to the High Fidelity stereotype, Gordie is as eager to learn of great music from his customers, as he is to push his favourites.

My teenage interest shifted from videogames to music, directly due to my first purchases at Backstreet, whether it was the soundtrack LP to The Rocky Horror Picture Show or that ultimately unlovable format, picture discs. I'm embarrassed to recall returning the 1979 Squeeze LP Cool for Cats under a fraudulent claim it was scratched. In reality, the bluntly stated lyrics of the Deptford band—later heralded as precursors to the Britpop of Blur through to the Kaiser Chiefs—were too vulgar for my virgin ears. Gordie allowed me to exchange it for The Friends of Mr. Cairo by Jon & Vangelis, who only influenced two further Jon & Vangelis records.

If Backstreet Records was my high school, Taz Records was my university—I had more enthusiasm for my work at Taz than I did for the actual education that took me to Halifax. Bob Switzer opened the shop in 1983, after acquainting himself with seemingly every record collector in Atlantic Canada. When Bob died in 2005, artists like Bullmoose Jackson, Travis Wammack, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, and Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five lost one of their greatest champions.

Bob Switzer resembled his store’s cartoon namesake, or an open-shirted Tom Waits topped with the hairdo of Jerry Lee Lewis, his favourite performer. Bob hired me because I was young; into music he ignored and, most importantly, could provide his customers with some relief from his curmudgeonly demeanour. I don’t recall taking a lot of pay from Taz, but I do know I received an original Pye LP of Something Else by the Kinks for my first day’s work.

Much later in Vancouver, I saw a series of shows by The Kinks' Ray Davies. After the show, Davies, another of the world's great curmudgeons, signed my copy of Something Else. By then I had replaced the LP with a CD, and that CD with a subsequent reissue, but I still tie whatever version of the record I own—and many, many others—to working at Taz Records.

The store has moved many times since, but remains a vital part of the Halifax musical landscape. I shop there still, and whether I'm pursuing my newfound passion for the works of Dion or jonesing for the new Black Mountain, they've still got the goods.

My research for a 1994 move to Vancouver included the compilation Last Call: Vancouver Independent Music 1977 – 1988. The 2-CD set is the British Columbian equivalent of Lenny Kaye's Nuggets, and promised great things from my adopted city. Zulu Records, a label and a shop in Vancouver's picturesque Kitsilano neighbourhood since 1981, assembled Last Call. Naturally, I made a beeline there.

Since Vancouver sees the arrival and departure of many international residents, Zulu has both supply and demand for pop music from all over the world—discs otherwise unavailable in this country can be found in Zulu's second-hand bins. But great records often need to be stumbled upon, and Zulu imports countless albums glowingly mentioned in Mojo or the New Musical Express, one trip to their well-used listening area away from becoming your new favourite.

When R.E.M. recorded Around the Sun in Vancouver in 2003, guitarist Peter Buck became a Zulu regular. Buck's side project with Scott McCaughey, the Minus 5, released their CD Down with Wilco in March, and Buck agreed to an in-store appearance. An earlier Minus 5 show became an impromptu R.E.M. performance, so onlookers packed Zulu's two storefronts for the day. While many jockeyed for vantage points, I browsed the jazz section. Just when I was eyeing the Nina Simone reissues, Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe assembled a few feet away and launched into "The Final Straw", a then unreleased anti-war song. R.E.M. gave way to the Minus 5, and I watched the performance next to Stipe and the great photographer, Anton Corbijn. It was a great day out.

For a seasoned record shopper, it's sobering to realise the 2008 equivalent of your fifteen year-old self could be equally mad for music without ever entering a record store, but Backstreet, Taz, and Zulu Records are still open for business, connecting unsuspecting shoppers with records that may well change their lives. Drop in, and it may just happen to you.

How Meow Records Saved My Life

There i was, a child of the 80's, jaded and dissilusioned. After all the 60's had the Beatles, the 70's had Zepellin; we had Culture Club and Wham. I'm not saying there weren't any good bands, but being froma small town with limited resources, I couldn't find any. Forming a band I began, out of necessity listening to (o god help me) pop-country. Please, take a moment to ponder my state.

Then I met Bryndis. "Hold steady," She said (and this was years before the Springsteen on ecstacy band came out) "Hold steady," she said, "fear not....there is good music still being made."

Bryndis purged my soul. I ignored the rivival (Nirvana, et. al.) because I refused to believe and see the signs. But Bryndis pointed me to the light. oh, Bless ehr eternally, she gave me direction and hope. I would not have discovered Wilco if not for her. Like Sub Pop, I trust her musical sensibilities and she has yet to steer me wrong. like a musical prophet, she knows exactly what I need.

When she announced: "This is my record store, with which I am well pleased." I knew I would be privy to a wealth of new, quality music. I feel like family when I go there. (Albeit the buck-toothed cousin who wears rubber boots, but still...)

Bryndis, wherever you are, thank you. If you are reading this, thank you again and yet a third time. Where would I and my band (The kiegles-Romance is Dead, available soon at Meow records) be without you.

A supporter of music that matters, a supporter of local bands, a supporter and promotor of local shows and projects, Meow Records has my vote for the best independant record store in Canada. It is run the way they are supposed to be run. For a man like me, it's aural viagra

    MEOW RECORDS!!!

Well, I apparently couldn't figure out how to use this thing earlier, so I sent in an email vote already, but once I figured out how to use this and saw all the wonderful comments I had to chip in again! (plus I have no idea if my email vote went through).

Meow Records is my vote for best independent record store. The store has event after event after event. There always seems to be something going on. Be it helping bands to promote shows, HOSTING shows at the store, putting together CDs with local artists, helping out the community through fund raisers (such as helping out the local SPCA), helping out students and student clubs, and generally trying to get the community involved and make a change!! Meow is at the forefront of turning the Prince George downtown around and making it a better place to go. It's the only reason I want to go downtown, and then, once I'm down there, I want to look around and see what other stores have to offer.

Oh yeah, and then there is the music selection, which is amazing!!! With all the other things it's easy to forget that Meow is the best source for your music needs!!!

    MEOW ReCords

As someone who has been in Prince George for roughly 5 years, i can safely say that Meow records is an idea that i have been excited for now for quite some time. Now that IT is here, i feel that Prince George has one more business to help revitalize what is a sorry, sad, shabby, downright sinister (not really) downtown.

To boot, I live 2 blocks away from this beam of musical goodness, which affords me the luxury of both accessing good music, and in many ways the better advantage of the owner's witty repartee, which is worth the trip to Prince George alone!

I nominate Meow Records, in Prince George, BC as the BEST record store in Canada. You would not believe the extent to which the owner, Bryndis, has gone to not only provide Prince George with an amazing place to purchase amazing music, but also the beautiful things that she has done for the community. I have never been so impressed with anyone or any store before. She runs an absolutely fabulous shop, and I would be so proud to see her win this. Bryndis has such an amazing soul, and Meow Records deserves this title more than anyone.

MEOW is the king of the road

Meow Records in Prince George, BC. Nowhere else in this little community can people get their music fix, and they've got everything. This underground gemstone has seriously brought music back to Prince George, and it's only been a year since it opened. Plus, for a tiny underground record store, they've put on a big heaping of shows around town, and have sponsored and helped out in shows that were put on by other people.

definately meow records in Prince George BC!

meow records is musically the best thing to hit PG in the entirety of its existence. located in the heart of a barely surviving downtown, meow records revives our faith in the downtown core by offering an incredible selection of vinyl, amazing and knowledgable staff, indepent shows, a record label, and the most puuuuurrrfect indie business owner PG's seen in years...she raises money for the SPCA, helps out local artists in any way she can, organizes roller derby leagues, designs fun clothing, hosts rad theme parties, creates yearly "calendar girls of meow records" calendars, and basically, makes music fun (what online music provider can do that?)

meow records has my vote. the owner is brilliant and has made it work in a years time in a small northern BC mill town...lets be honest, who else could do that??

    meow records IS the best

Meow Records is my favourite record store in Canada. Its all well and good to have a cool indie store in a city, where the cultural choices are broad and even overwhelming, but when you live out in the middle of the wilderness, in the god-forsaken nowhere, there are usually no choices beyond the limits of MOR corporate pablum. Meow Records, however, gives Prince George and the central interior of B.C. precisely the kind of musical choices that you otherwise have to go to Scratch or Red Cat or Zulu or Ditch in Vancouver or Victoria to find. Way to go, Bryndis Ogmundsson!!

    Atomix: More than a store

I visitied St. Catharines a little while ago and found the greatest record store. I've been to many record stores all my life. This one stood out. It had a personality and flavor all it's own. As soon as I walked in I felt at home. Like I had been there before but I never had been. The staff knew their music and their store. I've been to many record stores but when you walk into Atomix you fell like someone has invited you into their life and their life's passion is displayed in vinyl and paper. As a creature of the 70's I can tell you that this little record store really IS a record store.

Meow Records Saved My Life (or Sanity)

There are lots of great record stores in bigger cities. My favourite was Ditch Records in Victoria. I watched it grow from the day it started--it was exciting to be part of that, even if only as a consumer of obscure records.

When I moved to Prince George 2 years ago I felt lost without a good record store. When Meow Records started up I was more than happy. Meow is huge positive cultural force in PG, in a way that stores in larger centres are not.

    LISTEN and RED CAT

When I lived in Vancouver there really wasn't a rival to Red Cat. They have it all, great selection (music and mediums), easy to get if they don't have it, awesome atmosphere and well, some pretty darned great people running it. Now that I live in Edmonton, the best record store BY FAR is Listen- it has the echoes of Red Cat, and I think there is a distinct possibility that the guy who owns it (and appears to live there are times) may even be the greatest indy record store owner ever- not even a trace of snobbery, very knowledgeable, willing to take customer recommendations and always looking to make his store better. Love it.

Throwing my vote on with the gazillions of others for Meow Records, because they deserve it. In addition to being an excellent store with super-friendly and non-pretentious staff, they've also had a huge impact on the culture and community of Prince George in just a year. Listen Records 10443A - 124 Street Edmonton AB

Freindly atmosphere, reasonable prices and quality service are what I look for in a record store. Which is exactly what I find at Listen Records.

Kris has "tuned" me in to many different new artists, sold me tickets for alot of great concerts as well as having a great selection of DVD's and t-shirts.

There is salespeople who have a gift for knowing what the customer wants by Listening to the customer.

I have special ordered merchandise through Listen Records that I have found in other record stores, that's how much I support Listen Records.

In closing I would like to cast my vote for Listen Records as the Best Record Store in Canada.

Meow is wonderful - the staff knows their stuff, the stock is totally non-top40 oriented (but they'll order Springsteen if you ask), and Bryndis brought in Chad Van Gaalen to our music festival last year, which was off the wall and fantastic all at the same time. Go, Meow!

    Meeeeeoooow

The moment I got off the plane from the middle of nowhere, South America, I headed to Meow Records because I knew they would reliably have the indie music my soul craved for. The owner has been a great promoter and supporter of the arts for a long time, and I totally appreciate all the hard work she has put into the community. Meow Records is undeniably the best, and has been a much-needed contribution to the heart and soul of PG.

Exactly why Meow deserves to win

The reason for the seemingly mysterious existence of such zealous support for Meow records in Prince George is:

Because it exists, all of these grateful individuals no longer have ANY REASON WHATSOEVER to go to the mall. In a town where literally almost every business is a corporate outlet, suffering from lewd and hopeless big box sprawl, Meow provides a place for music to do what it does (connects people!!) without the usual modern crypto-fascist interference. Before its opening the only places to buy records (and that's strictly cd's, no vinyl) were HMV and Future Shop, (may they burn to to ground, ahem).

The esprit de corps you are sensing here comes from our shared years of suffering, having had to endure our sacred music being misfiled and served to us by unknowing clods wearing golden-arched visors, who then take our hard-earned clams and use them to further dilute and defile our most treasured stories, voices and sentiments. Bryndis is on a mission from God -- and we're all doing backflips singing her funky gospel.

And so do I issue a challenge to all other parties thinking of nominating their favourite record store:

Ask yourselves: "Does this machine kill fascists?" Ours does.

Infinite thanks to Bryndis and the family. Fighting the good fight.

    Red Cat

If the quality of the people involved in the operation of the store is a factor, then there is no comparison! The cats at Red Cat rock. They are my friends, and for a time, they were my house band. Brief history.... The buttless chaps have played many gigs for 50 to 100 people in my barn pretty much every year since they started up (sometimes twice a year). Sometimes it was prior to heading out on a big tour, once for a video shoot, and often just to give the local tree planters a chance to cut loose. Truly the nicest guys in the music industry I've met. Brilliant musicians, incredibly tight performers and as honest and forthright as any people you would want to meet.
When Red Cat want to promote an artist, it's because the artist is iimportant to them, and they want you to find that importance by listening to the artist, creating your own opinion and then letting them in on your thoughts. Totally cool.
Red Cat is as relevant as it gets... And The Buttless Chaps are the coolest band in the world, baby!

    Music Trader in Winnipeg

Located at River & Osborne, the hipster equivalent of Portage & Main, Music Trader has got to be the best record store in Winnipeg. They have EVERYTHING (new & used, tons of indie), they host live, in-store performances of local and touring bands all the time, and they're open until midnight!

They've got knowledgeable staff, a kooky mascot and, of course, the famous wall of customer polaroids. Plus, their long 'bar' of listening stations in front of windows facing out onto Osbrone Street is perhaps the best spot in the city for people watching.

For a kid from the suburbs, the plan was simple. Listen to Radio Sonic (the predecessor of Radio3 for you kids out there) on CBC Radio 2, then go to Music Trader and buy the records. What could be easier? My taste in music is due in large part to the existence of this store.

I've been in Montreal for about year and a half now, I haven't really found anything that compares, so I'll be curious to check out the recommendations posted here.

    Calgary's record stores

Calgary has a plethora of great independent music stores. There's Megatunes, Melodiya, Sloth, and Recordland (to name the ones I know about).

Each of them has their niche, be it the best selection of indie CDs in this half of the province (Megatunes, there's one in Edmonton, too), or the widest array of new vinyl in the city (Melodiya, they are also attached to an awesome comic book store, Phoenix Comics).

For used vinyl, look no further than Recordland. It's exactly what you would want from a record store. from the (seemingly) miles upon miles of CDs and cassettes to the truly huge archive of vinyl, it's a paradise for collectors.

Sloth records is a name that not only brings up thoughts of buying music to listen to, they also support the local scene by having their own label! With bands like Summerlad, Knucklehead, and Huevos Rancheros (and many more) releasing music through them, it's no wonder why we're one of the last bastions of great music on the prairies.

So next time you're in the city, don't hesitate to drop by any one of these fine locations:

    Megatunes:932 17 Ave. SW
    Melodiya: 2523A 17th Ave. SW

    X-Ray Records

Dave Kuzenko at X-Ray Records, here in cold Regina (Sask), knows just about everything that is going on and has gone on in music. Dave can answer your music questions and it doesn't matter if you're into Scandanavian Black Metal or just plain Mississippi Delta Blues; or anything inbetween. Trust me, Dave knows about it and he can get a copy into his store and then into your greedy little hands; vinyl (if available) or cd. Try doing that with Itunes or your local HMV! My vote is for X-Ray Records in Regina, Sask.

    Ditch in Victoria

I can't beleive only 1 person has mentioned Ditch Records in Victoria!

When I was a clueless first year university student, I though it wasn't that great because I hadn't heard of many of the bands. About halfway through the year I clued in and realized that it was the music I should be listening to; it became my one-stop shop for the best in Canadian independent music. Plus all of the staff play in local bands, so they always know what's going on around town.

Now that I've graduated and live in a town where only Top 40 is available, not very many days go by when I don't reminisce fondly about Saturday mornings spent at Ditch.

They are the only shop in town who have a large collection of local, d-i-y albums. The walls of the store are a homage to other records shops and studios. There are bags from amoeba records, posters and collectibles from Sun City studios and a variety of other eye candy for music nerds like myself.
Tim, Jarret and the rest of their staff are friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. They dispel the 'hi-fidelity' stereotype record shop staff typically all into.
If you're coming to visit Peterborough, check out this little shop. Well worth it.

    Vertigo Records - Ottawa

Vertigo Records has an expansive collection of records from a vast number of genres. It has the best selection of Hip-Hop new + used records in Ottawa, and an unholy amount of funk, jazz, indie rock, and blues.

For a not-so-distant second, Sounds Unlikely excels in records from around the world and the staff are very knowledgeable

    X-Ray Records

I have to say that X-Ray records in Regina, SK is the best. Dave Kuzenko is very knowledgeable and helpful. There have been times I've gone there in the search of something new and not once has his recommendations been a disappointment. Also there have been times when I've only know a few words to a song and he knows what I'm talking about and usually has it or will order it in. It is a great store and you just know that you will find what you are looking for when you go in there!

    THE DANGER ROOM, REGINA, SK

The best music store I have ever been into is located in Regina and operated by the friendly and cool Dylan Williams. If you are a fan of punk, hardcore, metal, indie rock or hip hop, you should check out his shop every time in you're in Regina. The back of the store has a ton of apparel and graff supplies. AND, in the very, very back there is a space where local bands practice and two guys operate a recording studio. Seriously, The Danger Room, 1356 McIntyre, Regina, SK. Get into it.

    T'would have to be Meow

I have sadly been away at school for the majority of Meow's existance, but I can recognize the greatness of the place from my few trips inside. Very rarely can you go to a record shop and *gasp* FIND what you're looking for, or didn't even know you were looking for. I brought a friend from New Brunswick in and she was blown away by the personality (and magnificent taste of the owner) of this tiny bit of brilliance. Also, the support for the local scene is fantastic, with regular intimate performances, and I have to say, the Girls of Meow calendar adds a touch of class to any room.
    Meow, indeed.

    Compact Music in Ottawa!

I go through Compact Music about 3 times a week, and impulse beats bank account during at least one of those trips. I started to go there because of the incredible back-catalog selection (or the ability to order it if they don't have it in), but stay because of the staff: I can't think of the last time where I bought something and didn't end up having a conversation with the person behind the cash, be it about the record I just bought, one I might be interested in, or a show.

    the value of vinyl

To add to the discussion (as I'm sure this is part of the idea), what is the value of vinyl to this award, at least in the eyes of the voters? I've only owned two vinyl 7'' in my life time (Propagandhi and Ruth's Hat). I'm not a collector, so I don't really see how having a selection of vinyl makes a "record store" great.

I know there's a whole collection of people out there who consider themselves audiophiles, and who think that vinyl offers better aural experience. But is a store that has poor CD selection but a good used vinyl selection really better than a store that has walls and walls of independent music on CDs? Isn't there a difference between someone who collects vinyls (i.e., a collector) and someone who likes music, regardless of what it's printed on?

I'm not trying to be derisive. This is a serious question. What are people's thoughts?

    Encore

I may be a bit biased. I've been shopping at Encore Records in Kitchener since 1982. They had only been open a short while.

Back then it was all vinyl but as things changed, they've kept up and kept it interesting.

I've not been in all the stores mentioned so far, but really, we are all fortunate to have every one of them !

I've discovered so much music during my weekly forays through the bins, that I can't fathom where my music collection would be without Encore.

I think last year marked their 25th year in business. A lot of stores have come and gone in town over that time, but the selection and passionate music geek staff have kept em going !

Best Record Stores: Barrie and Windsor.

I choose to nominate two stores, with equally good but different qualities...

In Barrie, BJ's Records and Nostalgia. Formerly the messy and mysteriously legendary Big John's Records (which was notorious for its frightening anti-theft signs featuring strange medieval quotes and threats of bodily harm)... BJ's is wonderfully organized with a huge selection of vinyls in near perfect condition for really good prices. A lot of good oldies can be found there, but not a whole lot of contemporary independent music. Nonetheless it's a real gem of an independent store in a Big Box kinda town like belle Barrie.

The next would be Dr. Disc in Windsor Ontario.
Unlike BJ's in Barrie, they've got a sweet supply of vinyls and CDs from most any great band you might find here on New Music Canada. They've also got great used vinyl for pretty cheap (although not always in the best shape), and an insane amount of dollar bin vinyls and tape cassettes. And in addition at least one of the staff members has a friggin sweet beard.

    Red Cat!

The owners are completely accepting of all types of music and people. They have a great record selection and are always willing to bring in anything that they don't have in stock. Red Cat has also been a huge friend to local bands and musicians by supporting the Vancouver music scene and having prominent displays of local talent.

    Encore!

Though i have lived in Toronto (a block away from Rotate This, which i may note: are moving into the old Songbird Music location soon - a few blocks West, so still in the 'hood) and am now an avid shopper there - just bought 'Born To Run' there today on Vinyl for $6!!! What a score!
I digress, christ that was long...
Anyway - Growing up in Kitchener, there was no finer place to find music than Encore Records! It completely shaped me as a human being, honest, it taught me the difference between what an indy store knows and offers in comparison to what the chains do. A lesson that stretches further boundaries than just music...
    Sorry about the rambling on!
    Here is my top 3.
