The Art of the Remix

Posted by Scott Wood on Feb 16, 2008
There is something about a great remix. It can pull you out to the dance floor, giving you one more reason to love your favourite tune. It can reinvigorate an old tired track, reminding you why you loved it in the first place. Or, it can spike the adrenalin in your veins, making you blow a corner on Need For Speed.

The remix used to be reserved for the dance floor, or as a way to get collectors to buy singles, but times have changed. Now remixes are showing up all the time, in commercials, video games and movie trailers. And sometimes the remix will become even more popular than the original song. So then, what makes a good remix?

I decided to talk to two experts Jesse Keeler of MSTRKRFT and Ghislain Poirier.

MSTRKRFT are best known for chopping up Wolfmother's classic rock-inspired tune "Woman" making it a dance party favorite. Ghislain Poirier has remixed artists like Spank Rock and Editors. Poirier is a connoisseur of underground and international styles, like grime, booty bass and raga, and he makes them accessible in his mixes.

Have a listen to what they have to say, and then tell us your favorite remix.

    Art of the Remix

Frankly, I thought this piece gave an interesting analysis towards a genre many have only a superficial knowledge of.

I felt this piece was quite fresh and would like to see more pieces like these on Radio 3.

By the way, my favorite remix is James Lavelle's version of "Bittersweet Symphony" (though many content "Bittersweet Symphony" itself is a remix of sorts).

    Nice article

I liked the transitions between the questions and answers. In terms of content, I'd like to hear a longer discourse on remixes in general.

Re: The Art of the Remix

I did enjoy that very much. I’m one those who usually likes the originals best, but I don’t dislike the remixs. To me they are a different song inspired by the original, and that’s fine with me but I usually find that the artist’s original inspiration for the song is the best, with some notable exceptions. I really like the fact that Buck 65 and Ghislain Poirier worked together too. That’s leading edge real Canadian art for you.

I loved the Madonna remix of Abba

This was a new topic for me and a very good way
for me to get into remixes. I would like to see more of this type of show. Great content and music combination.
