Live On Web Radio AND Sirius 94: 2008 Juno Nominees!

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Feb 05, 2008

Coming up today on Grant Lawrence Live, 3PM ET / noon PT on CBC Radio 3's web radio and Sirius satellite channel 94:

We are bumping our regular Trivia Tuesday feature to make room for the big news of the day: the 2008 Juno Nominations. Over the past few years it's been no secret to any regular listener of CBC Radio 3 that I have been an outspoken critic of our national Canadian music awards. The 2008 nominees were announced this morning, and we want to know what you think. This brings us to our...

Poll Question of the day:

DID THE JUNOS GET IT RIGHT THIS YEAR?

Yes or no? Right off the bat it pleases me to see the Arcade Fire finally nominated in the Group Of The Year category, if only three years late. Oddly, Maritime darling Joel Plaskett is only up for one award, and Wintersleep is apparently a "new" artist (on their third album). Holy F*ck continues to break the language barrier with their nomination, while Shad, such a fresh new face in Canadian hip-hop, deservedly gets his first.

Also on the show today we'll have live interviews several of the newly minted nominees such as Holy Fuck, Corb Lund, the Saint Alvia Cartel, Jill Barber, Classified and more. Check out the interviews below!

So what do you think? Who is missing from this list? The New Pornographers, Kevin Drew, Shout Out Out Out Out, the Weakerthans, and Jenn Grant were all over-looked this year. Criminal injustices or rightful omissions?

Please post your comments, opinions and stories and we'll discuss your comments on today's show.

Re: Live On Web Radio AND Sirius 94: 2008 Juno Nominees!

John K. Samson not getting a nod for writing is criminal.

No New Pornographers makes me sad (though maybe they deserve it for stiffing the East Coast again with their latest tour, kidding!)

There seem to be more R3 bands nominated than I remember from previous years no? That is good, I may actually watch this year.

    They are mainstream...

As much as it sucks that many great artists were missed, we have to remember that the Juno's are mainly mainstream music awards. Thought I don't really get the Wintersleep "new" artist and the Weakerthans missing out. I'm also kind of pissed that Stars were missed.

However, I am glad Tegan and Sara were nominated.

I was bored reading the list of nominees; I did see a few I was pleased about, however they were few and far between.

Re: Live On Web Radio AND Sirius 94: 2008 Juno Nominees!

I posted this in the other thread but it probably fits better here, so I’ll repost it here.
    ---
It’s great to see Radio 3 artists being more represented this year, as they should because Radio 3 represents what his really happening the in Canadian music scene better than any other major media source right now, but the Junos clearly still have big problems. They’re halfway to being credible this year at least, but they really need to overhaul their categories and become much more credible in general. “Adult alternative” probably best describes Radio 3 music today, although the term alternative is a problem in general. The Juno’s “Adult Alternative” category is more like traditional Boomer music, except for Jeremy Fisher who I’m not sure belongs in that category.

As for the “Alternative” category it is really adult alternative music, and in terms of critical acclaim the Arcade Fire and Tegan and Sarah nominations make sense, but The New Pornographers, Caribou, Sloan, Stars, The Weakerthans The Besnard Lakes and probably Sunset Rubdown, and maybe some others as well, had more critically acclaimed albums than Holy Fuck, Patrick Watson, and Wintersleep did. This is no knock on these three bands because they put out very good albums, but there were quite a few better albums put out this year, so how did these three get nominated instead? I know very little about how the Junos are run so I don’t know what the root problem is but they’ve been like this for a long time and it has really hurt the credibility of the award.

Re: Live On Web Radio AND Sirius 94: 2008 Juno Nominees!

They didn't get it wholly right, but I'd been a very surprised feller had they gotten it right in just one year.

The list reads like a step in the right direction. Kudos to Polaris for shaking it up enough to give the atrophy a hoof towards the curb.

Re: Live On Web Radio AND Sirius 94: 2008 Juno Nominees!

BigRockFan is right about some of the missing bands who put out great (and critically acclaimed) albums. Sunset Rubdown seems to be looked from my perspective but they're one of my favourite bands.

Still, I'm really glad to see Chromeo in there with Fancy Footwork in the Dance category.
That album has to be one of the funnest and dancy-est that came out last year.

I've never really paid the Juno's any mind or attention, thought they usually just gave it to the biggest Canadian band that made it in the states. Am I wrong on this perception of the past years? Like I said, paid almost no attention to them at all.

Re: Live On Web Radio AND Sirius 94: 2008 Juno Nominees!

The Junos have not got it right again. Sure, there are some really great bands nominated who really deserve the nod, but not nominating John K Samson in the songwriters category is a crime, let alone best album.
I am convinced Feist only got the nod for best album because she made a name for herself in the US. In my opinion, the Reminder deserved to be nominated for best album, but ahead of the Arcade Fire? They had a huge amount of pressure on them to release something great, and they did. If they let their music be sold to anyone willing to pay (aka itunes) i guarentee they will be taking their rightful spot in the album of the year category.
"Hey, Hey, You, You, I don't like your boyfriend". It's a proud day in Canada when those lyrics get you nominated for a major award.
    What a joke...

    The Arcade Fire

Did anyone hear the use of "no cars go" while watching the superbowl this sunday? Thought that was a little strange, I think it was FOX coverage of the game and they were using Arcade Fire!!! Perhaps that's what has made this nomination possible, something that people who don't listen to them judging whether they are good or not based on their success in America? Who knows? Something tells me they still won't win.

    Some more

I'm not sure when the cut-off date is for consideration, but I thought The Besnard Lakes, United Steelworkers, Two Hours Traffic, Abdominal and/or The Acorn might be there somewhere.

Also, I'm shocked that Emily Haines and SS weren't there, either. I may have my release dates all effed up, though.

    Hey Craig

Seeing as Scratch Bastard was nominated for production of Situation (rightly so), which came out much later then any of the albums you mentioned, I would gather that this is another fine example of the Juno's getting it really wrong. All of the discs you mentioned deserved to be nominated somewhere.

I've taken shits more musical then Hedly. What a terrible band.

Re: Live On Web Radio AND Sirius 94: 2008 Juno Nominees!

I got inspired to check out the Juno website for how nominations work. Oh. My. God. It looks like you pay to be nominated.

    http://www.junoawards.ca/08_sub_information.php

And, to answer some people's question:
    - The eligibility period for the 2008 Juno Awards is between September 1, 2006 and November 14, 2007. This means that your product must have been released to the general public within this time frame

  14. AlexOfAnders
    14

    Pay to be nominated?

Mind elaborating on the paying to me nominated? That would make the awards kind of a farce wouldn't it?
  15. Brayden
    15

    What!!?

What is this? Juno's are the Canadian counterpart to the Grammy's but do we really need to seek out nominees that sound like american artists as well?
ie: God Made Me Funky = The Black Eyed Peas

  16. isabelbrinck

    Pay to Play

Paying to submit a nomination might explain why indie artists aren't well represented and why Avril Lavigne is running for Best Songwriter.
Yeah, Arcade Fire at the Super Bowl, I DID hear that!

Re: Live On Web Radio AND Sirius 94: 2008 Juno Nominees!

There isn't a lot of info and the deadline is over so the page you sign up for being nominated is closed.

I was hoping someone in the media might elaborate more for us. Grant? Someone at CBC?

But, to me, it seems like CARAS (Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) runs the awards. Now that I think of it, it's probably common for there to be a fee and sign up process. Doesn't mean, necessarily it isn't based on actual sales and popularity. Perhaps means you need good representation (agent, record company) though, huh? To get you in the running at least.

Re: Live On Web Radio AND Sirius 94: 2008 Juno Nominees!

The Juno nomination committee have always seemed like a particularly lazy bunch of slackers, especially in the popular music categories. This is not really any different from any mainstream awards ceremonies - why listen to all those tedious albums/ watch all those lengthy movies when you can just look at sales figures and extrapolate, right? That said, I think radio 3 has to pat itself on the back for making things easier for the old codgers around the table, by giving them a handy place to access to interesting music for consideration. Well done you guys, and congratulations to our people!
However, if you need real evidence of the Juno's lack of musical vision/taste - check out the best international album category. These guys had the WORLD of music to choose from and ended up with the sorriest 5 selections I could imagine. Bon Jovi? Fergie? Josh Groban? Yikes. At least it makes Canadian artists look even better than we already do.

Re: Live On Web Radio AND Sirius 94: 2008 Juno Nominees!

The Polaris Prize has been only somewhat better in its first couple of years. I don’t know whether the Junos are out of touch, lazy, corrupt, or what the story is. Whatever it is I think they’ve been like this for a long time, and I think they used to largely get away with it before the internet made it so easy for even the average fan to look up these bands on the net. Before that many people took what the Junos said as gospel and they were able to play tastemakers to a significant extent instead of accurately representing what was actually happening, and I think that has hurt many artists and the Canadian music scene in general. I’ve always looked at the Junos the same way AlexOfAnders has. I scratched my head when I saw the list of nominees and then more or less blew the Junos off. If they were well run and legitimately represented the Canadian music scene, however, I think they could be a great asset to the Canadian music industry.
  20. Craig Norris
    20

    What about international artists?

Do they have to go through the submission process?
Don't think so. Based on sales, isn't it?
  21. blurasis

    Left out

I wanted Basia Bulat, Stars, Grand Analog, Caribou and The Acorns to be nominated.
  22. Grant Lawrence
    22

    submission process

hopefully everyone heard that interview with Kevin Lynne from Outside Music... he said that to be even be eligible for a nomination, you must submit 12 CDs, a submission form and $50.

All the indies follow this process... but does Michael Buble and Celine Dion? Kevin wasn't able to say.
  23. isabelbrinck
    23

    labels

My bet is that labels include these fees in promotional budgets whereas indie acts or tiny labels don't have the means to and are less likely to be nominated in the end, even after paying the fee and giving away the material.
Feist is great but how could they NOT include her when 1,2,3,4 is on every commercial in the world?
  24. Craig Norris
    24

    Part of the machine

I'm sure that the Canadian label/distributors go through the motion(s) of sending in Celine and Buble's stuff. There's probably a whole team of people at their label/mgmt whose job it is to make sure that they are entered in all awards shows.

Re: Live On Web Radio AND Sirius 94: 2008 Juno Nominees!

So just to play devil's advocate here... It has to be admitted that all our favourite artists are indie - in other words, most of Canada has no idea who they are. And while the Junos would be a great place for them to get some coverage, who wants to watch an awards show with nominees that you are totally ignorant of? So even if it kills me to see Avril in a songwriting category, the audience has to be considered. Until the rest of Canada is as enlightened as we are, we'll have to put up with Finger11 and their ilk in awards shows.

    I love the Junos

I love the Juno Awards, and though they haven’t nominated all of the best of Canadian music, they have captured a neat range of music.

Awards shows have to incorporate a certain balance when they consider artists who are nominated. If they go to mainstream, then they get criticised for selling out, and if they go to indy, they turn off the everyday public. I have always considered the Juno’s as a method of exposing Canadian acts to Canadians. Unfortunately, this has meant that many bands I appreciate get overlooked in favour of bands “regular” people have heard of. I know that sales have played a huge role in the past, but I understand that the process is now juried.

    Hits and Misses

As a jealous American and rabid R3 fan just across the river in Detroit, I sympathize with everyone who's thrown out forgotten artists like The Weakerthans, New Pornographers, Besnard Lakes, And Caribou etc.

But I am pleased to see who did make the list, and it's no short order. I agree that the Junos are mainstream, and probably do take the usual factors into consideration: popularity, acclaim and album sales. But if you were to line up the big categories and compare them artistically to any of the American Awards and their showing, I think Canadians have plenty to be relived about.

I know it sounds like riding the fence, but nobody is perfect, and I have my own beefs. No love for Grahme Van Pelt and Miracle Fortress for best new group? Add to that a brilliant early 2007 album by Emily Haines and The Soft Skeleton. And how is Star's uber-pop album not getting any love?

    The Devil in Danica

You have a very good point Danica.
I think on the whole the bands "we" love are quite well represented when you consider the sheer volume of music that gets made, sold, and bought in this country. Not everyone can possibly be nominated that deserves to be. I would hope we would all celebrate those records and people who DID get a nomination rather than dwell on those who didn't.

In my mind and my experience in Saskatoon last year and Halifax the year before, it's the week leading up to the Awards show that is the REAL celebration of Canadian music. It includes great bands that aren't nominated at all. For one week a lucky city comes alive with the sounds of Canadian music in all its forms.

    Devilled advocate

Well, as much as it's true we might represent a smaller side to Canadian music (sadly) these awards are supposed to represent the "best" Canada has to offer in the specified categories, right? That's what I think a lot of us get jaded over, that people will watch the Juno's and think that Avril is one of the best songwriters Canada can produce just because having more familiar names gets more people watching the ceremony. I think since the indie scene here is getting bigger, we've seen some more artists up there that normally, the Juno committee wouldn't even look at.

Congrats to everyone who got nominated but still, to call that the best out of all the choices is a big stretch to me.

    Just like ever year..

The good comes with the bad. I'm shocked that the Weakerthans did not get nominated? I mean they are media darlings, get tons of good press. Do they need to have a hit song in a Apple ad to get nominated? I love fiest. I really do. But Keven Drew? Fantastic Album? NP? "Myriad Harbour" was on of the best singles released last year. I'm glad the R3 is in place to support these artist. It seems that mainstream Canada still hasn't completely caught on.
