Something Foreshadowing this Way Comes?

The second annual Quebec Independent Music Awards (GAMIQ) were given out last night in Montreal. The big winner was Patrick Watson. He took away best artist, songwriter and pop album. These awards celebrate indepedently produced Quebec artists but end up looking like a big old Canadian awards show due to the fact that so many of these acts are on everyone's radar including the Arcade Fire, Malajube, Champion and The Dears.

An interesting part of these awards is the way they are selected. People vote online for their favourite artists and their votes account for 50 percent; a panal of judges make up the other 50 percent. Now I know my vote would be going to Patrick's Close to Paradise release for the next big Canadian awards show, the Polaris Prize. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if the GAMIQ has any sway on the Polaris judges.

    GAMIQ vs. Polaris

"A big old Canadian awards show," Lisa? Well, no. Unlike the Polaris, the GAMIQ doesn't claim to celebrate CANADIAN independent music, only that produced in Quebec. And yet it is the GAMIQ that has the bilingual website (unlike Polaris or Radio 3); it is the GAMIQ that has many more bilingual judges meaning that they can judge lyrics fairly (as must be the case given how many GAMIQ nominees and winners are anglophone - not so the Polaris; why, I can count the number of non-anglophone albums on this year's Polaris shortlist with NO hands!); and it is the GAMIQ that has the far more bilingual board of directors. I say it again: Polaris and Radio 3 are ENGLISH Canadian. It's the truth. Stop denying it. There's nothing wrong with it. Hey, why not even be PROUD of it?
